- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said forming means comprises means for applying adhesive to the strip material in two lines, a first said line being applied adjacent a first edge on a first side of said material and a second said line being applied adjacent a second edge on the second side of said material and cutting the strip material into a plurality of individual strips, and bonding said individual strips to said first sheet material; and means for moving each said individual strip, bonded to said first sheet material, out of the way of an individual strip to be subsequently bonded to said first sheet material.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said forming means further comprises means for overlapping said bonded strips to said sheet material.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said adhesive applying means comprises spaced first and second nozzles; spaced first and second backup rollers cooperatively spaced from and associated with said first and second nozzles, respectively, said backup rollers being adjustably mounted for varying the spacing between said rollers and their associated respective nozzles; and pump means for providing adhesive to said nozzles at a rate proportional to the feeding of said strip material, whereby said strip material passes around the first backup roller adjacent the first nozzle, at which point said first nozzle applies an adhesive line adjacent the first edge on the first side of said strip material, and said strip material passes around the second backup roller adjacent the second nozzle, at which point said second nozzle applies an adhesive line adjacent the second edge on the second side of said strip material.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said adhesive applying means further comprises a heating block for melting hot-melt adhesive, said heating block containing said pump means and said nozzles being mounted on said heating block in a heat transferring manner, whereby said nozzles are maintained at the same temperature as said heating block; and means for forcing solid hot-melt adhesive into the heating block in controlled quantities small enough to prevent yellowing of the melted adhesive while maintaining an even adhesive flow.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 2, further including pressing means for effecting the bonding of said individual strips comprising a relatively rigid member in comparison to the rigidity of said strips mounted on means for applying linear force and disposed parallel to and on the opposite side of said individual strips as they are presented to said first sheet material; and means for sensing alignment of a cut end of said individual strips relative to said first sheet material, said force applying means being activated responsive to said sensing means when said alignment is sensed, whereby said rigid member presses the aligned individual strip against the first sheet material.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 2, further including air jets positioned to blow air at each successive individual strip pressed and bonded to said first sheet material to displace an individual strip out of the way of the next subsequently pressed and bonded individual strip.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising means for heating said first sheet material and for pressing and bonding strips to said first sheet material.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for cutting and accelerating said strips to successively displace said strips from the next trailing strip.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 9, further comprising means for cutting individual strips, means for spacing said individual strips after cutting, said spacing means comprising an endless belt disposed perpendicular to said sheet materials and in-line with said individual strips, said endless belt having a plurality of holes extending therethrough; a drive wheel and idler roller supporting said endless belt, said wheel driving said belt at a speed greater than the rate of said strip material; a hollow support structure extending between said wheel and idler structure opening to one side along its length and said endless belt riding sealingly along said open side; means for evacuating said hollow support structure and drawing air through said holes in the endless belt to pull individual strips against said belt; and nip means for pressing said individual strips against said endless belt, said nip means cooperating with said cutting means to act only at the time of cutting, whereby said strip material passing through said cutting means is pulled against the endless belt in sliding contact, and when an individual strip is cut, said individual strip is pulled against said endless belt and spaced away from the uncut strip material.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said heat setting means comprises a first endless belt; a second endless belt; a hot roller enclosed within said first endless belt; and a cool roller enclosed within said second endless belt; wherein said first belt is pulled tightly against the hot roller and said second belt is pulled tightly against said first belt around a portion of the hot roller, and said second belt is pulled tightly against the cool roller and said first belt is pulled tightly against said second belt around a portion of the cool roller, whereby said sandwich may be passed between said belts and around said rollers to first heat and then cool said sandwich under uniform pressure due to tension induced in said belts.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said heat setting means comprises a first endless belt; a second endless belt disposed adjacent to said first belt over a portion of their length; means for heating said belts over a first part of the adjacent portion; means for cooling said belts over a second part of the adjacent portion; and means for applying pressure to said sandwich when passed between said belts, whereby said sandwich may be passed between said belts and successively heated and cooled.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said heating means includes at least one heating plate and wherein said cooling means includes at least one cooling plate.
- 14. Apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said means for applying pressure to said sandwich comprises a first air plenum located opposite said heating plate, a second air plenum located opposite said cooling plate, a first air blower for supplying pressurized air to said first air plenum, and a second air blower for supplying pressurized air to said second air plenum, wherein pressurized air in said first and second plenums biases said belts toward said heating plate and said cooling plate, respectively.
