Claims
- 1. In an elongate photographic film strip characterized by successive image frames, the improvement comprising:
- a magnetic layer; and
- a longitudinal track magnetically recorded in said magnetic layer, said track comprising at least one self-identifying data field, said self-identifying data field comprising data relating to a photographic parameter and a predetermined identification code which identifies the photographic parameter.
- 2. The improved film strip of claim 1 wherein said track comprises a plurality of different self-identifying data fields.
- 3. A method of recording data relating to different photographic parameters in a magnetic layer of an elongate photographic film strip, comprising the steps of:
- assigning a different identification code to each of said different photographic parameters;
- determining the photographic parameter particular data to be recorded relates to; and
- recording the assigned identification code for the determined photographic parameter along with the particular data in the magnetic layer.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the recorded particular data and assigned identification code for the determined photographic parameter comprise a self-identifying data field; and
- further comprising the step of recording data relating to different photographic parameters in different self-identifying data fields, said data fields extending along a longitudinal track in said magnetic layer.
- 5. In an elongate photographic film strip characterized by successive image frames, the improvement comprising:
- a magnetic layer; and
- a longitudinal track magnetically recorded in said magnetic layer, said track comprising data recorded by a manufacturer of said film strip, said track beginning and ending within a respective frame.
- 6. A photofinisher magnetic writing and reading system for use in a photofinishing system in which an elongate film strip having a magnetic layer and successive frames, is developed and printed after exposure of said film strip by a camera, comprising:
- means for sensing whether data has previously been recorded in said magnetic layer, and for reading such data;
- means for storing instructions specifying a universal symbol dictionary of allowed characters representative of data and further specifying a universal dictionary of ID codes, each ID code uniquely defining a particular information type; and
- means for writing and reading data in said magnetic layer so as to create one or more longitudinal photofinisher-dedicated tracks in such a manner that each of said photofinisher-dedicated tracks is confined within a corresponding one of said frames with a predefined start sentinel character and a stop sentinel character recorded in said track at respective beginning and end points of said track, each track being divided into individual fields and each field being preceded by one of said ID codes corresponding to the type of data recorded in said field.
- 7. In an elongate photographic film strip characterized by successive image frames, the improvement comprising:
- a magnetic recording area; and
- at least one self-identifying data field magnetically recorded in said magnetic area, said self-identifying data field comprising data relating to a photographic parameter and an assigned identification code which identifies the photographic parameter.
- 8. The elongate photographic film strip of claim 7, wherein the self-identifying data field comprises:
- data magnetically recorded by a manufacturer of said film strip.
- 9. In a stage of a film processing system which processes an elongate photographic film strip having successive image frames and a magnetic recording area, the improvement comprising:
- means for recording at least one self-identifying data field in said magnetic area, said self-identifying data field comprising data relating to a photographic parameter and an assigned identification code which identifies the photographic parameter.
- 10. The improved stage of claim 9 further comprising means for storing instructions specifying a universal symbol dictionary of allowed characters representative of data and further specifying a universal dictionary of assigned identification codes, each identification code uniquely defining a particular photographic parameter.
- 11. The improved stage of claim 10 wherein said stage comprises one of a camera and photofinishing apparatus.
- 12. The improved film strip of claim 1 wherein said track begins and ends within a respective frame.
- 13. The improved film strip of claim 2 wherein said track begins and ends within a respective frame.
- 14. The method of claim 4 wherein said track begins and ends within a respective image frame of the film strip.
