- 5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said indicator means senses the temperature of the air underneath said dome and above the food.
- 6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the temperature of the air underneath said dome is approximately equivalent to the temperature of the food such that said indicator means indirectly senses the temperature of the food.
- 7. The tray assembly of claim 1 further comprising a rethermalization cart having at least one rethermalizing element, said food service tray being positionable in said rethermalization cart, said food service tray including a through-opening, said hot food plate being positionable in said through-opening, and said hot food plate having a plate bottom.
- 8. The tray assembly of claim 7 wherein said tray is positionable in a rethermalizing position in said cart such that said plate bottom is in thermal contact with said rethermalizing element to thereby heat the food.
- 9. The tray assembly of claim 8 wherein said indicator means exhibits a first color when said dome is positioned over said hot food plate and the food thereon comprises chilled, pre-cooked food and, after the food is heated by said rethermalizing element, said indicator means exhibits a second color perceptibly different from the first color if the heated food is at a temperature indicating that it is safe for immediate consumption.
- 10. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said indicator means includes a color reversible thermochromic member.
- 11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said indicator means is vertically disposed within said heat insulated dome.
- 12. A hot food service tray assembly, comprising:
- a food service tray;
- a hot food plate supported on said service tray;
- a heat insulated dome positionable in an insulation position over food on said hot food plate to thereby thermally insulate the food; and
- indicator means for indicating, with said heat insulated dome in the insulation position over the food, the approximate temperature of the food, said indicator means including a solid core thermochromic dowel member embedded within a top surface of said dome, and said member being disposed such that the temperature indicating color thereof is discernible from generally above said dome;
- wherein said indicator means further includes a heat conductive sleeve disposed about said thermochromic member; and
- wherein said indicator means, by the temperature indicating color thereof, provides a warning system to ensure that only properly heated food is served.
- 13. The tray assembly of claim 12 wherein said indicator means has a safe heat zone color when the food is generally over 140.degree. F. and a different heat zone color when the food is generally under 140.degree. F.
- 14. The tray assembly of claim 12 further comprising a rethermalization cart having a rethermalizing element and in which said food service tray is positionable, said food service tray including a through-opening, said hot food plate being positionable in said through-opening, and said hot food plate having a plate bottom.
- 15. The tray assembly of claim 14 wherein said food service tray is positionable in a rethermalizing position in said cart such that said plate bottom is in thermal contact with said rethermalizing element to thereby heat the food.
- 16. The tray assembly of claim 15 wherein said indicator means exhibits a first color when said dome is positioned over said hot food plate and the food comprises chilled, pre-cooked food and, after the food is heated by said rethermalizing element, said indicator means exhibits a second color perceptibly different from the first color when the heated food is at a safe temperature for immediate consumption.
- 17. The tray assembly of claim 15 wherein said indicator means, by the temperature indicating color thereof, also indicates whether said rethermalizing element was activated with said food service tray in the rethermalizing position.
- 18. The assembly of claim 12 wherein said indicator means includes a color reversible thermochromic member.
- 19. The assembly of claim 12 wherein said indicator means is vertically disposed within said heat insulated dome.
- 20. A hot food service tray assembly, comprising:
- a food service tray;
- a hot food plate supported on said service tray;
- a heat insulated dome positionable in an insulation position over food on said hot food plate to thereby thermally insulate the food; and
- indicator means for indicating, with said heat insulated dome in the insulation position over the food, the approximate temperature of the food, said indicator means including a solid thermochromic dowel member and a heat conductive sleeve disposed about said member and embedded within said dome;
- wherein the color of said indicator means changes to a perceptibly different color when the air under said dome and above the food exceeds a temperature indicating a safe serving temperature of the food, said indicator means thereby indicating that the food is at a safe serving temperature.
- 21. The tray assembly of claim 20 wherein said indicator means has a safe heat zone color when the food is generally over 140.degree. F. and a different heat zone color when the food is generally under 140.degree. F.
