Claims
- 1. A vector comprising a chimeric gene comprising in sequence:
- (a) a promoter recognized by polymerases of a plant cell; and
- (b) a DNA fragment encoding a protein with acetyltransferase activity on a glutamine synthetase inhibitor, wherein said protein is capable of inactivating said glutamine synthetase inhibitor in a plant cell.
- 2. The vector of claim 1, wherein said DNA fragment encodes a protein with phosphinothricin acetyltransferase activity.
- 3. The vector of claim 2, wherein said DNA fragment is obtained from a Streptomyces species.
- 4. The vector of claim 3, wherein said DNA is obtained from Streptomyces hygroscopicus or Streptomyces viridochromogenes.
- 5. The vector of claim 2, wherein said DNA fragment encoding a protein with phosphinothricin acetyltransferase activity has a molecular weight of about 22 kD.
- 6. The vector of claim 2, wherein said DNA fragment encodes a protein comprising the amino acid sequence:

- 8. The vector of claim 1, wherein said promoter is a 35S promoter of Cauliflower Mosaic Virus, a TR1' promoter, a TR2' promoter or a promoter of a gene encoding a Rubisco small subunit.
- 9. The vector of claim 2, wherein said promoter is a 35S promoter of Cauliflower Mosaic Virus, a TR1' promoter, a TR2' promoter or a promoter of a gene encoding a Rubisco small subunit.
- 10. The vector of claim 6, wherein said promoter is a 35S promoter of Cauliflower Mosaic Virus, a TR1' promoter, a TR2' promoter or a promoter of a gene encoding a Rubisco small subunit.
- 11. The vector of claims 2 or 6, which further comprises a first DNA encoding a chloroplast transit peptide between said promoter and said DNA fragment.
- 12. The vector of claim 11, in which said first DNA is from a gene encoding the Rubisco small subunit.
- 13. The vector of claims 2 or 6 which further comprises a 3' untranslated end including a polyadenylation signal.
- 14. The vector of claim 13, wherein said 3' untranslated end is from a T-DNA gene of Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
- 15. The vector of claims 2 or 6 wherein said DNA fragment and said promoter are located between T-DNA border sequences to enable transfer of said DNA fragment and said promoter to a plant cell.
- 16. The vector of claim 15, which is a modified Ti-plasmid.
- 17. The vector of claims 2 or 6 which is capable of replicating in a bacterium.
- 18. The vector of claim 17, which is capable of replicating in E. coli.
- 19. The vector of claim 17, which is capable of replicating in Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
- 20. A vector comprising a DNA fragment encoding a protein comprising the amino acid sequence:

- 22. The vector of claims 20 or 21 which further comprises a promoter recognized by polymerases of a host cell, wherein said promoter controls expression of a coding region comprising said DNA fragment.
- 23. The vector of claim 22, wherein said promoter is heterologous to said DNA fragment.
- 24. The vector of claim 22, wherein said promoter is recognized by the polymerase of E. coli.
- 25. A vector comprising a DNA fragment encoding a protein with acetyltransferase activity on a glutamine synthetase inhibitor, wherein said protein is capable of inactivating said glutamine synthetase inhibitor in a plant cell.
- 26. The vector of claim 25, wherein said DNA fragment encodes a protein with phosphinothricin acetyltransferase activity.
- 27. The vector of claim 26, wherein said DNA fragment is obtained from a Streptomyces species.
- 28. The vector of claim 27, wherein said DNA is obtained from Streptomyces hygroscopicus or Streptomyces viridochromogenes.
- 29. The vector of claim 26, wherein said DNA fragment encodes a protein with phosphinothricin acetyltransferase activity having a molecular weight of about 22 kD.
- 30. The vector of any one of claims 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29, wherein said DNA fragment is under control of a promoter recognized by polymerases of a host cell, wherein said promoter is heterologous to said DNA fragment.
