Claims
- 1. A plastic article formed into a pre-determined shape and exhibiting substantial rigidity and non-deformability sufficient to withstand external forces and retain its shape during use having a number of surfaces with at least one surface being modified by contacting that surface with a reactive gas atmosphere containing F.sub.2, Cl.sub.2, O.sub.2, Ozone, SO.sub.3, oxidative acids, or mixtures thereof, at a temperature and gas partial pressure sufficient to increase the surface energy of the at least one surface being modified to at least 40 dynes/cm at a temperature of 20.degree. C. having a non-slip coating bonded to the at least one modified surface of the article resulting in an increase in a co-efficient of friction between said at least one surface having said non-slip coating and an opposing surface with which said article may be placed in contact.
- 2. The article of claim 1, wherein the material from which the article is formed is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyvinylchlorides, and polyesters.
- 3. The article of claim 1, wherein the material from which the article is formed is selected from the group consisting of condensation polymers and addition polymers.
- 4. The article modified in accordance with claim 1, wherein the pre-determined shape of said article is selected from the group consisting of a shipping pallet, a parking stop, a load bed liner and non-wooden lumber, all exhibiting increased surface energy.
- 5. The article of claim 4, wherein the article is shaped in the form of a shipping pallet and the material from which the article is formed is a high density polyethylene.
- 6. The article of claim 4, wherein the article is shaped in the form of non-wooden lumber and the material from which the article is formed is a high density polyethylene.
- 7. The article of claim 4, wherein the article is shaped in the form of a parking stop and the material from which the article is formed is a high density polyethylene.
- 8. The article of claim 4, wherein the article is shaped in the form of a load bed liner and the material from which the article is formed is a polyvinylchoride.
- 9. The article formed in accordance with claim 1, wherein said non-slip coating selected from the group consisting of polyurethanes, epoxies, polyamides, polyureas and latex polymers which include acrylics, styrenics, natural and synthetic rubbers.
- 10. The article formed in accordance with claim 1, having a non-slip coating bonded to the at least one modified surface, wherein said non-slip coating is modified to include particles to produce a surface profile and further increase the co-efficient of friction between the surface of the article to which the non-slip coating is bonded and the opposing surface so that the article exhibits improved dry and wet traction.
- 11. The modified non-slip coating of claim 10, wherein the particles which produce the surface profile and increase the co-efficient of friction between the surface of the article and the opposing surface are selected from the group consisting of elastomeric materials which include rubber, surface modified rubber and polyurethane and rigid organic materials which include surface modified plastic, sand and carborundum.

No. 5,382,685, which is a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 07/842,185, filed Feb. 27, 1992, abandoned.
