Claims
- 1. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame mounted above said base; a patient support platform longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including a leg panel; and a toilet module disposed beneath said patient support platform and normally concealed by said leg panel; said patient support platform and toilet module being configures such that when said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said bed said leg panel retracts from over said toilet module to expose said toilet module for use.
- 2. The hospital bed of claim 1 wherein said legal panel pivots downwardly after retracting from over said toilet module.
- 3. The hospital bed of claim 2 wherein:
said patient support platform includes an upwardly pivoting head panel; said bed being configures such that when said leg panel is pivoted downwardly said head panel is pivoted upwardly, said bed assuming a chair position.
- 4. The hospital bed of claim 2 wherein:
said patient support platform further includes a pair of bolsters, one of which is located outboard of each lateral edge of said leg panel; said leg panel and bolsters being configures such that after said leg panel has been pivoted downwardly said bolsters provide side support to a patient moving from said patient support platform to said toilet module and back.
- 5. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame mounted above said base; and a patient support platform longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including a downwardly pivoting leg panel and an upwardly pivoting leg panel; said bed being configured such that when said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said bed said leg panel pivots downwardly after said patient support platform has traveled a predetermined distance and said head panel pivots upwardly, said bed assuming a chair position.
- 6. The hospital bed of claim 5 wherein:
said patient support platform further includes a pair of bolsters, one of which is located outboard of each lateral edge of said leg panel; said leg panel and bolsters being configures such that after said leg panel has been pivoted downwardly said bolsters provide side support to a patient moving from said patient support platform to a patient care module located at a foot end of said bed and back.
- 7. A hospital bed comprising:
a based with casters; and a main frame mounted above said base, said main frame including a pair of spaced, longitudinal, generally parallel rails, each said rail having a foot end which diverges laterally outwardly; said laterally outwardly diverging foot ends of said main frame rails providing structure for guidingly docking therebetween a rollable patient care module to said main frame.
- 8. The hospital bed of claim 7 wherein said rollable patient care module is a toilet module.
- 9. The hospital bed of claim 7 further including:
a patient support platform longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including a leg panel; said patient support platform being configures such that when a rollable patient care module is docked to said main frame and said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said bed said leg panel retracts from over the patient care module to expose the patient care module for use.
- 10. The hospital bed of claim 9 wherein:
said leg panel pivots downwardly after retracting from over said patient care module; and wherein said patient support platform includes an upwardly pivoting head panel; said bed being configures such that when said foot panel is pivoted downwardly said head panel is pivoted upwardly, said bed assuming a chair position.
- 11. A hospital bed comprising:
a base having head and foot ends and casters mounted on said head and foot ends; a main frame mounted above said base; a patient support platform longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame; and a pair of pivoting footboard halves operably mounted to said patient support platform one of which is located on each lateral side of said patient support platform at a foot end thereof, said footboard halves when oriented laterally to said bed functioning together as a footboard and when oriented longitudinally to said bed functioning separately as sideguards/handrails; said base and footboard halves being configures such that when said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said bed said footboard halves are retracted to between said foot end casters and said head end casters.
- 12. The hospital bed of claim 11 wherein:
said patient support platform includes a downwardly pivoting leg panel and an upwardly pivoting head panel; said bed being configures such that when said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said bed said foot panel is pivoted downwardly and said head panel is pivoted upwardly, said bed assuming a chair position; whereby a patient egressing from said chair configured bed and moving from a sitting position to a standing position while utilizing said sideguards/handrails applies a downward force via said sideguards/handrails intermediate said foot end casters and said head end casters.
- 13. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame mounted above said base; a patient support platform mounted on said main frame and including a seat panel, a downwardly pivoting leg panel and an upwardly pivoting head panel, and a pair of bolsters one of which is located outboard of each lateral edge of said leg panel; said bolsters being moveable from a position forward of and in a plane defined by said seat panel to a position above and along each lateral edge of said seat panel when said leg panel is pivoted downwardly and said head panel is pivoted upwardly to provide armrests for a patient situated atop said bed configured as a chair.
- 14. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame having head and foot ends mounted above said base; a patient support platform having head and foot ends and longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including a downwardly pivoting leg panel and an upwardly pivoting head panel, said patient support platform being configured such that when said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said main frame said leg panel pivots downwardly and said head panel pivots upwardly, said bed assuming a chair position; a frame mounted to said head end of said main frame and said foot end of said main frame and extending along and over said patient support platform; a traveling harness mounted to said frame and adapted to be secured to a patient; said traveling harness for providing security and stability to a patient as the patient egresses from said bed configured as a chair and moves from a sitting position to a standing position and onto a patient care module positioned at said foot end of said main frame.
- 15. A hospital bed comprising:
a based with casters; a main frame having head and foot ends mounted above said base; a patient support platform having head and foot ends and longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including a downwardly pivoting leg panel and an upwardly pivoting head panel, said patient support platform being configured such that when said patient support platform is moved toward a head end of said main frame said leg panel pivots downwardly and said head panel pivots upwardly, said bed assuming a chair position; and a frame mounted to said head end of said main frame and operably mounted to said foot end of said patient support platform and extending along and over said patient support platform, said frame being operable to extend and retract along a length thereof as said patient support platform extends and retracts on said main frame.
- 16. The hospital bed of claim 15 wherein said frame is an orthopedic frame which maintains a relative distance between said frame and a patient as said patient support platform extends and retracts.
- 17. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame mounted above said base; a patient support platform longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including head and leg panels; means for moving said patient support platform longitudinally toward a head end of said main frame; and means for pivoting said leg panel downwardly after said patient support platform has a traveled a predetermined distance toward said head end of said main frame.
- 18. The hospital bed of claim 17 wherein said bed includes patient care module disposed beneath said patient support platform and normally concealed by said leg panel, and wherein said means for moving said patient support platform causes said leg panel to retract from over said patient care module to expose said patient care module for use, at which time said means for pivoting said foot panel downwardly allows a patient support in said bed to move from said patient support platform to the floor and then to said patient care module.
- 19. The hospital bed of claim 18 wherein said patient support platform further includes a pair of bolsters one of which is disposed on either lateral side of said leg panel, said bolsters spanning between said head panel and patient care module to provide said support to the patient when moving from said patient support platform to the patient care module and back.
- 20. The hospital bed of claim 17 further including means for moving said head panel upwardly as said means for moving said patient support platform moves said platform longitudinally toward a head end of said main frame.
- 21. The hospital bed of claim 17 wherein said leg panel comprises a calf panel pivoted relative to said main frame and a foot panel pivoted to said calf panel.
- 22. The hospital bed of claim 21 wherein said means for pivoting said foot panel includes:
means for pivoting said foot panel downwardly relative to said calf panel; and means for pivoting said calf panel downwardly relative to said main frame.
- 23. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame mounted above said base; a patient support platform longitudinally movably mounted on said main frame and including head and leg panels pivotally moveable relative to said main frame; a first drive for moving said patient support platform longitudinally toward a head end of said bed; and a second drive for pivoting said leg panel downwardly after said patient support platform has traveled a predetermined distance toward said head end of said main frame.
- 24. The hospital bed of claim 23 wherein said leg panel comprises:
a calf panel pivoted relative to said main frame; and a foot panel pivoted to said calf panel.
- 25. The hospital bed of claim 24 further including:
a first linkage operable between said foot and calf panels for pivoting said foot panel relative to said calf panel; and a second linkage operable between said calf panel and main frame for pivoting said calf panel relative to said main frame; both said linkages being actuated by said second drive.
- 26. The hospital bed of claim 25 wherein said first linkage comprises:
a first link having first and second ends, said first end being pivoted to said foot panel; a second link having first and second ends, said first end being pivoted to said second end of said first link, said second end having a protuberance thereon, said second link being pivoted to said calf panel intermediate said first and second ends; and a roller operably connected to said first drive and normally contacting said second link intermediate said first and second ends; whereby when said first drive is actuated said roller rides along said second link towards said protuberance, said second link rotating in response thereto and causing a force to be applied to said first link which moves said foot panel downwardly relative to said calf panel.
- 27. The hospital bed of claim 26 wherein said first linkage further includes a spring operable between said foot panel and said first end of said second link to aid in rotating said second link.
- 28. The hospital bed of claim 25 wherein said second linkage comprises:
at least a second roller operably connected to said first drive; said calf panel including a roller bearing plate for said second roller to roll along and bear against, said roller bearing plate supporting said calf panel on said second roller; whereby when said first drive is actuated said second roller rides along said roller bearing plate toward an end thereof, and when said second roller rolls off said end, said calf panel is permitted to move downwardly relative to said main frame.
- 29. The hospital bed of claim 28 wherein said roller bearing plate further includes a ramp commencing at said end thereof, and when said roller rolls of said end said second roller rolls along said ramp.
- 30. A combination of hospital apparatus comprising:
a hospital bed having a base with casters, a main frame mounted above said base, a patient support platform mounted on said main frame and including a seat panel, a downwardly pivoting leg panel and an upwardly pivoting head panel, and a pair of bolsters, one of which is located outboard of each lateral edge of said leg panel; and a mobile power column having a base with casters, a support extending upwardly from said base and patient critical care equipment supported by said support; said mobile power column occupying a cavity defined between said bolsters when said foot panel is pivoted downwardly.
- 31. A hospital bed comprising:
a base with casters; a main frame vertically movably mounted above said base; a patient support platform mounted on said main frame and defining a footprint when projected downwardly onto a floor surface; and a toilet module latchable to said main frame, positioned within said footprint, and being raisable and lowerable with said main frame.
- 32. The hospital bed of claim 31 wherein:
said toilet module comprises a frame, with casters, and supporting a toilet seat, said frame including a pair of upwardly oriented supports at a rear end and a pair of laterally outwardly projecting bars at a front end; and said main frame includes a pair of latch blocks at a foot end which receive said upwardly oriented support therein and a pair of ears secured thereto forward of said latch blocks which support said laterally outwardly projecting bars.
- 33. The hospital bed of claim 32 wherein said latch blocks each comprise:
a tube; a plunger within said tube; a spring biasing said plunger toward a latched position; a U-shaped notch in said tube for accepting one of said upwardly oriented supports; and a semicircular notch in an end of said plunger for capturing said one of said supports therein and against a wall of said tube U-shaped notch.
- 34. A pivoting hospital bed foot gate convertible to a hand rail comprising:
a vertical inner tube adapted to be fixed to a portion of a hospital bed; a vertical outer tube spring biased to a downward position over said inner tube; a horizontal tube connected to said vertical outer tube; a pin secured to a lower end of said vertical inner tube; and a collar on a lower end of said vertical outer tube and including a plurality of notches each for receiving said pin therein; wherein when one of said foot gates is mounted at each lateral said of the hospital bed at a foot end thereof, said foot gates function together as a footboard when oriented collinear with respect to each other, and when oriented parallel to each other function separately as sideguards, said notches and pin locating said gates in their respective positions.
- 35. The foot gate of claim 34 wherein when on of said foot gates is mounted at each lateral side of the hospital bed at a foot end thereof, said foot gates ma, when oriented collinear with respect to each other, be secured together, one of said foot gates including a sliding plunger slidable into the other of said foot gates to lock said foot gates together.
- 36. A patient support comprising
a base, a support platform supported by the base and including a seat panel and a leg panel movable relative to the seat panel to a chair position, and a walker dockable to the frame, a space being defined between the walker and the leg panel when the walker is coupled to the frame, the space having sufficient size to permit a patient to stand between the walker and the leg panel.
- 37. The patient support of claim 36, wherein the space is positioned under the leg panel before the leg panel is moved to the chair position.
- 38. The patient support of claim 36, wherein the panel is rotated downward relative to the seat panel when moved to the chair position.
- 39. The patient support of claim 36, wherein the walker is positioned inside the perimeter of the frame when docked thereto.
- 40. The patient support of claim 36, further comprising a mattress including a leg portion supported by the movable leg panel of the patient support platform.
- 41. The patient support of claim 40, wherein the patient support platform further includes a head section that cooperates with the seat and leg sections to support the mattress is a stepped configuration.
- 42. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform, the patient support platform including at least a seat section and a leg section, the leg section being movable relative to the seat section from a bed position substantially parallel with the seat section and a chair position rotated downward relative to the seat section, and a walker dockable with the frame.
- 43. The patient support of claim 42, wherein the leg section is positioned to support the calf of a patient as it rotates downward.
- 44. The patient support of claim 42, wherein the leg section is pivotably coupled to the seat section.
- 45. The patient support of claim 42, wherein rotation of the leg section provides a space for a patient to stand between the walker and the leg panel.
- 46. The patient support of claim 45, wherein the space is sized to receive the walker within perimeter portions of the frame.
- 47. The patient support of claim 42, further comprising a pair of rails supported by the frame to block egress from the patient support, wherein the pair of rails are positioned adjacent to the leg panel to assist a patient in moving from the patient support platform to the walker.
- 48. The patient support of claim 42, further comprising a mattress positioned over the movable leg section of the patient support platform.
- 49. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform, the patient support platform including a plurality of sections, a first section of the plurality of sections being movable relative to the base to position a patient's legs for contact with a portion of a floor surface, and a walker dockable with the frame.
- 50. The patient support of claim 49, wherein the portion of the floor surface is positioned under the first section before said movement of the first section relative to the base.
- 51. The patient support of claim 49, wherein the frame defines a footprint projected downward on the floor surface and at least a portion of the walker is positioned over the footprint.
- 52. The patient support of claim 49, wherein the first section drops below the level of the remainder of the plurality of sections during the movement relative to the base.
- 53. The patient support of claim 49, wherein the first section is positioned to support a patient's calves during movement of the first section relative to the base.
- 54. The patient support of claim 49, wherein the first section is configured to position a patient's legs between perimeter portions of the frame after movement of the first section relative to the base.
- 55. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform, the patient support platform including a head section, a seat section, and a leg section, the patient support platform being configured to move between a bed position and a chair position with the leg section moved relative to the seat section and the seat section in a substantially horizontal position, and a walker dockable with the frame to permit a patient seated on the seat section to use the walker when the patient support platform is in the chair position.
- 56. The patient support of claim 55, wherein the seat and leg sections cooperate to move a patient's legs from a substantially straight position to a substantially bent position during movement from the bed position to the chair position.
- 57. The patient support of claim 55, wherein movement of the leg section opens a space in the frame sized to receive the walker to permit positioning of the walker for use by the patient seated on the seat section.
- 58. The patient support of claim 55, wherein the patient support platform further includes a head section that is substantially parallel relative to the seat section when the patient support platform is in the bed position and is rotated upward relative to the seat section when the patient support platform is in the chair position.
- 59. The patient support of claim 55, wherein the seat section of the patient support is positioned at a midpoint between head and foot ends of the frame when the patient support platform is in the chair position.
- 60. The patient support of claim 55, further comprising a pair of rails positioned to assist the patient during movement from a position seated on the seat section of the patient support platform and a position supported by the walker.
- 61. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform, the patient support platform including a head section, a seat section, and a leg section, the patient support platform being configured to move between a bed position and a chair position with the head section moved relative to the seat section and the seat section in a substantially horizontal position, and a walker dockable with the frame.
- 62. The patient support of claim 61, wherein the head section and seat section are substantially parallel when the patient support platform is in the bed position and cooperate to define an angle less than 180° when the patient support platform is in the chair position.
- 63. The patient support of claim 61, further comprising a mattress having a head section supported by the head section of the patient support platform and a seat section supported by the seat section of the patient support platform.
- 64. The patient support of claim 63, wherein the head section of the mattress moves with the head section of the patient support platform during movement between the bed and chair positions.
- 65. The patient support of claim 61, wherein a head end of the head section of the patient support platform is positioned adjacent to a head end of the frame when the patient support platform is in the bed position and elevated relative to the seat section of the patient support platform when the patient support platform is in the raised position.
- 66. The patient support of claim 61, wherein the head section and the seat section cooperate to move a patient's torso from a substantially flat position when the patient support platform is in the bed position to a substantially bent position when the patient support platform is in the chair position.
- 67. A patient support comprising
a patient support frame including a base and a patient support supported by the base, the patient support frame including a head end and a foot end, and a walker dockable with the foot end of the patient support frame, the walker including a frame and a seat pivotable between a use position configured to securely support a patient seated thereon and a storage position to increase an uncovered portion of a floor surface for walking.
- 68. The patient support of claim 67, wherein the seat includes a section that moves from a substantially horizontal position when in the use position to a substantially vertical position when in the storage position.
- 69. The patient support of claim 67, wherein the seat includes a seat portion and a back portion extending up from the seat portion.
- 70. The patient support of claim 67, wherein the seat is configured to pivot about an axis that includes a horizontal component.
- 71. The patient support of claim 67, wherein the patient support frame defines a footprint projected downward on a floor surface and movement of the seat to the storage position uncovers a portion of the footprint.
- 72. The patient support of claim 71, wherein movement of the seat to the storage position increases the amount of the footprint not covered by the seat.
- 73. A patient support comprising
a patient support frame including a base and a patient support supported by the base, the patient support including a head end and a foot end, and a walker dockable to the foot end of the patient support frame, the walker including a frame and a seat pivotably coupled to the frame of the walker.
- 74. The patient support of claim 73, wherein the seat is pivotable from a horizontal use position to a vertical storage position.
- 75. The patient support of claim 73, wherein the seat defines a footprint projected downward on a floor surface and pivoting movement of the seat changes the size of the footprint.
- 76. The patient support of claim 73, wherein the seat is pivotable between first and second positions, the seat includes first and second ends, the first and second ends are supported by the frame of the walker when in at least one of the first and second positions.
- 77. The patient support of claim 73, wherein the patient support frame defines a footprint projected downward on a floor surface and pivoting of the seat uncovers a portion of the footprint to permit a patient to stand on the portion of the footprint.
- 78. A patient support comprising
a frame, a mattress supported by the frame, the mattress including head and foot ends and first and second sides extending between the head and foot ends, and a rail movable from a foot rail position blocking egress of a patient from the foot end of the mattress and a side rail position, the rail being configured to move toward the head end of the mattress when moved from the foot rail position to the siderail position.
- 79. The patient support of claim 78, wherein the frame includes a rail support member extending longitudinally adjacent to a leg section of the mattress the rail is supported by the rail support member.
- 80. The patient support of claim 78, wherein the frame includes a patient support platform configured to support the mattress, the patient support platform is configured to move between a bed position and a chair position, the patient support platform defines a footprint projected downward on a floor surface, the patient support platform includes a seat section and leg section configured to lower relative to the seat section when the patient support platform moves from the bed position to the chair position to uncover a portion of the footprint.
- 81. The patient support of claim 80, wherein the rail is positioned above the footprint to provide support for a patient standing on the portion of the footprint.
- 82. The patient support of claim 78, wherein the rail is configured to pivot toward a patient resting on the patient support when moved from the foot rail position to the siderail position.
- 83. The patient support of claim 78, further comprising a pair of siderails supported by the frame and positioned to block egress of a patient from the mattress, the rail is positioned between the siderails when in the rail position.
- 84. The patient support of claim 78, further comprising another rail movable from a foot rail position blocking egress of a patient from the foot end of the mattress and a side rail position, said rail being configured to move toward the head end of the mattress when moved from the foot rail position to the siderail position.
- 85. The patient support of claim 84, wherein the frame includes a patient support platform supporting the mattress, the patient support platform defines a footprint projected downward on a floor surface, the rails are positioned above the footprint to assist a patient standing on a portion of the footprint uncovered by movement of the patient support platform.
- 86. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform positionable in a substantially flat bed position, a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress defining a footprint projected downward on a floor surface when the patient support platform is in the bed position, the footprint including a head end, a foot end, and first and second sides extending between the head and foot ends, and a rail movable from a foot rail position to block egress of a patient from the foot end of the footprint and a side rail position to block egress of a patient from the first side of the footprint.
- 87. The patient support of claim 86, wherein the rail includes a proximal end coupled to the frame and a distal end, the distal end moves toward a head end of the frame when moved from the foot rail position to the side rail position.
- 88. The patient support of claim 86, wherein the rail follows a path positioned over the footprint when moved from the foot rail position to the siderail position.
- 89. The patient support of claim 86, wherein the frame includes a longitudinally extending rail support member positioned adjacent a leg section of the mattress, the rail is supported by the rail support member.
- 90. The patient support of claim 89, wherein the frame includes an intermediate frame supporting the patient support platform and the rail support member is cantilevered to the intermediate frame.
- 91. The patients support of claim 90, wherein the patient support platform includes a leg section movable to a position uncovering a portion of the footprint to permit a patient to stand thereon and grasp the rail in the side rail position.
- 92. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform movable between first and second positions relative to the base, a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress including a head end and a foot end, the mattress defining a footprint when projected downward on a floor surface when the patient support platform is in the first position, movement of the patient support platform to the second position uncovering a portion of the footprint to permit the patient to stand thereon, and a pair of rails movable from foot rail positions to block egress of a patient from the foot end of the mattress and side rail positions, the portion of the footprint being positioned between the rails when the rails are in the side rail positions.
- 93. The patient support of claim 92, wherein the patient support platform includes a leg section that moves relative to the base to provide the movement of the patient support platform between the first and second positions.
- 94. The patient support of claim 92, wherein the patient support platform shifts longitudinally relative to the base during movement from the first position to the second position.
- 95. The patient support of claim 92, wherein the rails are positioned over a foot end of the footprint when in the foot rail position.
- 96. The patient support of claim 92, wherein the rails move toward a head end of the footprint when moved from the foot rail position to the siderail position.
- 97. The patient support of claim 92, wherein the rails are configured to move over the mattress during movement between the foot rail position and the siderail position.
- 98. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform including at least a seat section and a leg section, the leg section being movable between a bed position in a substantially parallel relationship with the seat section and a chair position rotated downward relative to the seat section, a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress having a head end and a foot end, and a rail movable from a foot rail position to block egress of a patient from the foot end of the mattress and a siderail position.
- 99. The patient support of claim 98, wherein the mattress defines a footprint projected downward on a floor surface when the leg section is in the bed position, movement of the leg section to the chair position uncovers a portion of the footprint to permit a patient to stand thereon.
- 100. The patient support of claim 99, wherein the portion of the footprint is positioned between the leg section and the rail when the rail is in the foot rail position.
- 101. The patient support of claim 99, further comprising another rail movable from a foot rail position to block egress of a patient from the foot end of the mattress and a siderail position, wherein the portion of the footprint is positioned between the rails when the rails are in the siderail positions.
- 102. The patient support of claim 99, wherein the rail follows a path during movement from the foot rail position to the siderail position and the path is positioned over the portion of the footprint.
- 103. The patient support of claim 98, wherein the rail remains at a substantially constant height when the leg section moves between the bed and chair positions.
- 104. The patient support of claim 98, wherein the frame further includes a cantilevered, longitudinally extending rail support member positioned adjacent to the leg section when the leg section is in the bed position, the rail is supported by the rail support member.
- 105. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base, a patient support platform configured to shift longitudinally relative to the base, and a longitudinally extending rail support member, a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress including a head end, a foot end and a leg support section positioned between the head and foot ends, the mattress defining a footprint when projected downward on a floor surface when in a substantially flat bed position, the rail support member being positioned adjacent to the leg support section when the mattress is in the substantially flat bed position, the leg support section of the mattress being movable to a position uncovering a portion of the footprint to permit the patient to stand thereon, and a rail supported by the rail support member of the frame, the rail being positioned to permit a patient to hold thereon when standing on the portion of the footprint.
- 106. The patient support of claim 105, wherein the patient support platform includes a leg section supporting the leg section of the mattress, the leg section being movable from a substantially horizontal position to a substantially vertical position.
- 107. The patient support of claim 105, wherein the frame includes an intermediate frame and the rail support member is cantilevered from the intermediate frame.
- 108. The patient support of claim 107, wherein the intermediate frame is configured to be raised and lowered relative to the base.
- 109. The patient support of claim 107, wherein the patient support platform is supported by the intermediate frame.
- 110. The patient support of claim 105, wherein the rail member and the rail support member cooperate to define an angle of about 90° when the rail member is in a foot rail position blocking egress of a patient from a foot end of the mattress.
- 111. The patient support of claim 110, wherein the rail is movable to a siderail position with the rail support member and the rail cooperating to define an angle of about 0°.
- 112. The patient support of claim 111, wherein the rail is substantially positioned over the rail support member when in the siderail position.
- 113. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and patient support platform, the patient support platform being movable relative to the base between first and second positions, a mattress supported by the patient support platform, and a patient care module positioned under the patient support platform when the patient support platform is in the first position, movement of the patient support platform to the second position uncovering the patient care module to permit a patient supported on the mattress to access the patient care module.
- 114. The patient support of claim 113, wherein the patient support platform shifts relative to the base in a longitudinal direction when moved between the first and second positions.
- 115. The patient support of claim 113, wherein the patient care module includes a seat portion configured to support a patient.
- 116. The patient support of claim 115, wherein the patient care module is a toilet module.
- 117. The patient support of claim 113, wherein the patient support platform includes a leg section that moves from a substantially horizontal position to a chair position, movement to the leg section uncovers a portion of a floor surface to permit a patient to stand thereon during access of the patient care module.
- 118. The patient support of claim 117, wherein movement of the patient support platform to the second position provides clearance for the leg section to move to the chair position.
- 119. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform supported by the base, the base including a head end and a foot end, the patient support platform including at least a seat section and a leg section, the leg section of the patient support platform being movable between a bed position in substantially parallel relationship with the seat section and a chair position with the leg section rotated downward relative to the seat section, and a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the patient support platform being movable in a first longitudinal direction toward the head end of the base from a first position to a second position, the leg section of the deck being movable to the chair position when the patient support platform is in the second position.
- 120. The patient support of claim 119, wherein the patient support platform further includes a head section, the head section is movable from a bed position substantially parallel with the seat section to a chair position rotated upward relative to the seat section.
- 121. The patient support of claim 120, wherein the head section is in the chair position when the patient support platform is moved toward the head end of the base.
- 122. The patient support of claim 119, wherein movement of the leg section of the patient support platform to the chair position uncovers a portion of a floor surface to permit a patient to stand within the perimeter of the patient support.
- 123. The patient support of claim 122, further comprising a patient care module dockable with the frame to permit a patient standing on the portion of the floor surface to use the patient care module.
- 124. The patient support of claim 119, wherein the patient support platform slides along a linear path when moved in the first longitudinal direction relative to the base.
- 125. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform supported by the base, the base including a head end and a foot end, the patient support platform including at least a head section, a seat section, and a leg section, the head and leg sections of the patient support platform being movable between bed positions in substantially parallel relationship with the seat section and chair positions with the head section rotated upward relative to the seat sections and the leg section rotated downward relative to the seat section, and a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the patient support platform being movable in a first longitudinal direction toward the head end of the base from a first position to a second position, the head section of the deck being in the chair position when the patient support platform is in the second position.
- 126. The patient support of claim 125, wherein the leg section is movable independent of the head section.
- 127. The patient support of claim 125, further comprising a patient care module dockable to the frame.
- 128. The patient support of claim 127, wherein the patient care module is dockable to a foot end of the frame and movement of the leg section to the chair position uncovers a portion of a floor surface to permit a patient seated on the mattress to access the patient care module.
- 129. The patient support of claim 127, wherein movement of the patient support platform in the first longitudinal direction uncovers the patient care module for use by a patient positioned on the patient support.
- 130. The patient support of claim 125, wherein the frame further includes a mechanism configured to raise and lower the patient support platform relative to the base.
- 131. The patient support of claim 125, wherein the patient support platform slides along a linear path when moved in the first longitudinal direction relative to the base.
- 132. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform, the patient support platform being longitudinally movable relative to the base, the patient support platform including at least a head section, a seat section, and a leg section, the head and leg sections of the patient support platform being movable between bed positions in substantially parallel relationships with the seat section and chair positions with the leg section rotated relative to the seat section and the head section rotated relative to the seat section, movement of the leg section to the chair position being independent of movement of the head section to the chair position, and a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress defining a footprint projected downward on a floor surface when the patient support platform is in the bed position, movement of the leg section of the patient support platform uncovering a portion of the footprint, the frame being configured to permit access to the portion of the footprint from outside of the frame to permit entry and egress to and from the portion of the footprint by a patient.
- 133. The patient support of claim 132, wherein the frame further includes an intermediate frame configured to support the patient support platform and a pair of longitudinally extending members positioned adjacent to the leg section of the patient support platform, the pair of longitudinally extending members cooperate to define an open end of the frame through which a patient passes during entry and egress to and from the portion of the floor surface.
- 134. The patient support of claim 133, further comprising a rail coupled to at least one of the longitudinally extending members to block egress from the mattress when the leg section is in the bed position.
- 135. The patient support of claim 132, wherein the base includes an open end permitting entry and egress to the portion of the floor surface in a longitudinal direction.
- 136. The patient support of claim 132, further comprising a footboard supported by the frame and configured to block egress of a patient from a foot end of the mattress.
- 137. The patient support of claim 136, wherein the footboard includes a pair of rails configured to move from closed foot rail positions blocking egress of a patient from the foot end of the mattress and open rail positions permitting egress of a patient from the portion of the footprint.
- 138. The patient support of claim 132, further comprising a patient care module positionable above the portion of the footprint.
- 139. The patient support of claim 132, wherein the patient support platform slides along a linear path when moved longitudinally relative to the base.
- 140. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base and a patient support platform supported by the base, the patient support platform being longitudinally movable relative to the base, the patient support platform including at least a head section, a seat section, and a leg section, the head and leg sections of the patient support platform being movable between bed positions in substantially parallel relationships with the seat section and chair positions with the leg section rotated downward relative to the seat section and the head section rotated upward relative to the seat section, movement of the leg section to the chair position being independent of movement of the head section to the chair position, and a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress defining a footprint projected downward on a floor surface when the patient support platform is in the bed position, movement of the leg section of the patient support platform uncovering a portion of the footprint to permit a patient to stand thereon.
- 141. The patient support of claim 140, wherein the frame includes an open end permitting entry and egress of a patient to and from the portion of the footprint.
- 142. The patient support of claim 140, wherein the patient support platform is configured to move toward a head end of the base with the head section in the chair position and the leg section in the bed position.
- 143. The patient support of claim 140, wherein the leg section of the patient support platform is movable between the chair and bed positions while the head section remains in the chair position.
- 144. The patient support of claim 140, further comprising a patient care module dockable with the frame, wherein the portion of the footprint is positioned between the patient care module and the leg section.
- 145. The patient support of claim 144, wherein the patient support platform is movable relative to the base from a first position covering the patient care module and a second position uncovering the patient care module to permit a patient to stand on the portion of the footprint and use the patient care module.
- 146. The patient support of claim 140, wherein the patient support platform slides along a linear path when moved longitudinally relative to the base.
- 147. A patient support comprising
a frame including a base, an intermediate frame, a patient support platform supported by the intermediate frame, and a mechanism configured to raise and lower the intermediate frame relative to the base, the patient support platform being movable in a longitudinal direction relative to the base, the patient support platform including at least a seat section and a leg section, the leg section of the patient support platform being movable between a bed position in substantially parallel relationship with the seat section and a chair position with the leg section rotated downward relative to the seat section, and a mattress supported by the patient support platform, the mattress defining a footprint projected downward on a floor surface when the patient support platform is in the bed position, movement of the leg section of the patient support platform uncovering a portion of the footprint that remains located between perimeter portions of the frame after said movement, the frame being configured to permit access to the portion of the footprint from outside of the frame to permit entry and egress to and from the portion of the footprint.
- 148. The patient support of claim 147, further comprising a foot board that is movable relative to the frame from a first position blocking entry and egress to and from the portion of the footprint and a second position permitting entry and egress to the portion of the footprint.
- 149. The patient support of claim 147, further comprising a patient care module supported by the frame to be raised and lowered with the intermediate frame.
- 150. The patient support of claim 147, wherein the base includes an open end configured to permit a patient to enter and egress to and from the portion of the footprint.
- 151. The patient support of claim 150, wherein base includes a pair of cantilevered, longitudinally extending members and the portion of the footprint is positioned between the cantilevered, longitudinally extending members.
- 152. The patient support of claim 147, further comprising a pair of rails, wherein the frame further includes a pair of longitudinally extending, rail support members positioned to support the rails at a height to support the arms of a patient standing on the portion of the footprint.
- 153. The patient support of claim 147, wherein the patient support platform slides along a linear path when moved in the longitudinal direction relative to the base.
