- 2. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means to effect a sweep of said coherent light across said work zone comprises a mirror; means supporting said mirror for rotation in the intended path of the beam of coherent light from said source of coherent light, and first drive means for effecting rotation of said mirror.
- 3. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 2 wherein said means to position a workpiece in a work zone includes means to feed a workpiece through said work zone traversely of said sweep of coherent light.
- 4. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 3 including a gear train interconnecting said first drive means to said means to feed a workpiece into said work zone whereby said mirror rotation is in synchronism with said means to feed said workpiece.
- 5. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 4 including a differential gear means in said gear train, and second drive means connected to said differential gear means to effect variations in the speed of said means to feed said workpiece
- 6. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 including lens means for focussing said sweep of coherent light into a beam.
- 7. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 wherein said means to feed a workpiece into a work zone comprises a cylinder mounted for rotation, and means interconnecting said cylinder to said first drive means.
- 8. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 including means to actuate said second drive means responsive to differences in the length of a workpiece relative to a nominal workpiece.
- 9. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 wherein said light transmitting and receiving lines on said grating are positioned at an oblique angle relative to said reflected portion of said sweep of coherent light.
- 10. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 9 wherein said lines are at an angle of approximately 45.degree. relative to said sweep of coherent light.
- 11. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 9 wherein said light transmitting lines on said grating are transparent and said light receiving lines are opaque.
- 12. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said light transmitting and receiving lines on said grating are positioned at an oblique angle relative to said reflected portion of said sweep of coherent light.
- 13. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 12 including frame means mounting said grating for rotation about a pivot point, and grating actuator means connected to said frame for effecting rotation of said grating.
- 14. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 12 including a frame; a sub-frame mounting said grating; actuator means interconnecting said sub-frame and said frame to effect changes in the position of said sub-frame and thus said grating relative to said frame.
- 15. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 14 including means to support said frame for rotation about a pivot point, and second actuator means for effecting said rotation.
- 16. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 1 including counter means connected to said second light detector means so that as the sweep of reflected light is transmitted by said light transmitting lines, said second light detector means receives pulses of light for counting by said counter.
- 17. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 16 wherein said lines are at an angle of approximately 45.degree. relative to said sweep of coherent light.
- 18. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said workpiece to be inspected includes Y axis alignment marks thereon for indicating the position of said workpiece along an axis transverse to said work zone, and means responsive to said first light detector means for actuating said energizing means to effect registration of said sweeping coherent light across said work zone with said alignment marks by rotation of at least said one end of said flexible prism.
- 19. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 18 including a pair of upstanding frame members at opposite longitudinal ends of said prism; and means connected to said frame members for adjusting the position of said prism transversely of said work zone.
- 20. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 18 including a pair of upstanding frame members at opposite longitudinal ends of said prism, shaft and bearing means connected to opposite longitudinal ends of said prism, connecting said frame members thereto and along the longitudinal axis of said prism.
- 21. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 20 including means to grip said prism inboard of said frame members and adjacent thereto; an offset portion of said gripping means, said first and second actuator means each comprising push-pull actuators connected to an associated frame member and connected to said offset portion to effect rotation of said prism about its longitudinal axis.
