Claims
- 1. An inspection tool comprising: first means to feed a workpiece to be inspected into a work zone, said workpiece having a pattern thereon to be inspected; a source of coherent light and second means to effect a sweep of said coherent light across said work zone; first drive means connected to said second means to effect said sweep; a gear train connected to said first drive means and said first means to effect synchronous operation of said first and second means; a differential gear system in said gear train intermediate said first and second means; and a second drive means connected to said differential gear system whereby upon actuation of said second drive means variations in the speed of said first means may be obtained.
- 2. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means to effect a sweep of said coherent light across said work zone comprises a mirror; means supporting said mirror for rotation in the intended path of the beam of coherent light from said source of coherent light, and first drive means for effecting rotation of said mirror.
- 3. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 2 wherein said mirror contains a plurality of facets.
- 4. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 2 including lens means for focussing said sweep of coherent light into a beam.
- 5. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said means to feed a workpiece into a work zone comprises a cylinder mounted for rotation.
- 6. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 wherein said cylinder includes means on the surface thereof for engagement with a workpiece.
- 7. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 and including a web of flexible material for engagement with a workpiece, and means on said cylinder for engagement with said flexible material to effect movement of said flexible material as said cylinder rotates.
- 8. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 including means for detecting the position of said cylinder during any one rotation thereof.
- 9. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 8 including means for comparing the position of said cylinder with the position said cylinder should be in at a predetermined time.
- 10. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 including means to actuate said second drive means responsive to differences in the length of a workpiece relative to a nominal workpiece.
- 11. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 5 including light detector means for receiving light reflected from a workpiece in said work zone from said sweep of coherent light, a prism mounted for rotation in a frame in the path of said sweep of coherent light, and actuator means to effect rotation of at least a portion of said prism, and energizing means to energize said actuator at predetermined times.
- 12. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 11 wherein said prism is flexible and said workpiece to be inspected includes Y axis alignment marks thereon for indicating the position of said workpiece along an axis transverse to said work zone, and means responsive to said first light detector means for actuating said energizing means to effect registration of said sweeping coherent light across said work zone with said alignment marks by rotation of at least said one end of said flexible prism.
- 13. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 12 including a pair or upstanding frame members at opposite longitudinal ends of said prism, shaft and bearing means connected to opposite longitudinal ends of said prism, connecting said frame members thereto and along the longitudinal axis of said prism.
- 14. An inspection tool in accordance with claim 13 including means to grip said prism inwardly of said frame members and adjacent thereto; an offset portion of said gripping means, said first and second actuator means each comprising push-pull actuators connected to an associated frame member and connected to said offset portion to effect rotation of said prism about its longitudinal axis.
