- wherein from 1 to 14 amino acids can optionally be deleted from the N-terminus and/or from 1 to 15 amino acids can optionally be deleted from the C-terminus; and wherein from one to three of the amino acids designated by Xaa are different from the corresponding amino acids of native (1-133) human interleukin-3; and said mutant human interleukin-3 polypeptide has at least three times greater cell proliferative activity than native human interleukin-3 in at least one assay selected from the group consisting of: AML cell proliferation, TF-1 cell proliferation and Methylcellulose assay.
- 2. A polypeptide according to claim 1, further comprising an Alanine residue immediately preceding said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.
- 3. A polypeptide according to claim 1, further comprising a Methionine-Alanine dipeptide fragment immediately preceding said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.
- 4. The mutant human interleukin-3 (hIL-3) polypeptide of claim 1 wherein 1-15 amino acids are deleted from the C-terminus and 1-14 amino acids are deleted from the N-terminus of said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.
- 5. A polypeptide according to claim 4, further comprising an Alanine residue immediately preceding said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.
- 6. A polypeptide according to claim 4, further comprising a Methionine-Alanine dipeptide fragment immediately preceding said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.
- 7. The mutant human interleukin-3 (hIL-3) polypeptide of claim 1 wherein;

- 11. A polypeptide according to claim 10, further comprising an Alanine residue immediately preceding said modified hIL-3 amino acid Science.
- 12. A polypeptide according to claim 10, further comprising a Methionine-Alanine dipeptide fragment immediately preceding said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.
- 13. The mutant hIL-3 polypeptide according to claim 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 4, 5 or 6 wherein said mutant hIL-3 polypeptide has at least five times greater cell proliferative activity than native human interleukin-3 in at least one assay selected from the group consisting of: AML cell proliferation, TF-1 cell proliferation and Methylcellulose assay.
- 14. The mutant hIL-3 polypeptide according to claim 1, 2 3, 10, 11, 12, 4, 5 or 6 wherein said mutant hIL-3 polypeptide has at least ten times greater cell proliferative activity than native human interleukin-3 in at least one assay selected from the group consisting of: AML cell proliferation, TF-1 cell proliferation and Methylcellulose assay.
- 15. A mutant human interleukin-3 (hIL-3) polypeptide comprising a modified (15-125) hIL-3 amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:19

- 45. A polypeptide having an amino acid sequence consisting of a Methionine-Alanine dipeptide and a modified hIL-3 sequence according to claim 43, wherein said Methionine-Alanine dipeptide immediately precedes said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.

- 54. A polypeptide having an amino acid sequence consisting of a Methionine-Alanine dipeptide and a modified hIL-3 sequence according to claim 52, whereto said Methionine-Alanine dipeptide immediately precedes said modified hIL-3 amino acid sequence.

The mutant hIL-3 polypeptide according to claim 43, 44, 45, 52, 53 or 54 wherein said mutant hIL-3 polypeptide has at least five times greater cell proliferative activity than native human interleukin-3, in at least one assay selected from the group consisting of: AML cell proliferation, TF-1 cell proliferation and Methylcellulose assay.
- 56. The mutant hIL-3 polypeptide according to claim 43, 44, 45, 52, 53 or 54 wherein said mutant hIL-3 polypeptide has at least ten times greater cell proliferative activity than native human interleukin-3 in at least one assay selected from the group consisting of: AML cell proliferation, TF-1 cell proliferation and Methylcellulose assay.
- 57. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a mutant human interleukin-3 polypeptide of claim 18, 19, 20, 45, 46 or 47 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
