Claims
- 1. An assembly comprising: an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first one of the manifold wall through-holes and disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount comprising a surrounding wall in closure of a second one of the manifold wall through-holes and an inlet tube that contains the inlet port, the surrounding wall comprises an axial wall portion extending from the second of the manifold wall through-holes and a radial wall portion extending radially inward from the axial wall portion to the inlet tube, the surrounding wall and at least a portion of the inlet tube are respective integral formations of a single part, and the surrounding wall defining with the inlet tube an annular space surrounding the inlet tube and opening to the external space.
- 2. An assembly comprising: an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first one of the manifold wall through-holes and disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount comprising a surrounding wall in closure of a second one of the manifold wall through-holes and an inlet tube that contains the inlet port, the inlet tube and the surrounding wall of the second mount comprise respective radial walls that are in mutual abutment, and the surrounding wall defining with the inlet tube an annular space surrounding the inlet tube and opening to the external space.
- 3. An assembly comprising: an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first one of the manifold wall through-holes and disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount comprising a surrounding wall in closure of a second one of the manifold wall through-holes and an inlet tube that contains the inlet port, the surrounding wall of the second mount coacting with the inlet tube and the manifold wall to leave the inlet port open to the external space, and the surrounding wall of the second mount and at least a portion of the inlet tube are respective integral formations of a single part.
- 4. An assembly comprising: an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first one of the manifold wall through-holes and disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount comprising a surrounding wall in closure of a second one of the manifold wall through-holes and an inlet tube that contains the inlet port, the surrounding wall of the second mount coacting with the inlet tube and the manifold wall to leave the inlet port open to the external space, and the inlet tube and the surrounding wall of the second mount comprise respective radial walls that are in mutual abutment.
- 5. An assembly comprising; an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve for recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating the internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising a through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling the flow of exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of the manifold wall through-hole, while disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, the valve mechanism comprising an electric actuator that positions a valve member relative to a valve seat, the valve body comprising an air circulation space disposed axially between the valve seat and the actuator, and the valve body being disposed on the mount to dispose the air circulation space in the external space so that the air circulation space opens directly to the external space.
- 6. An assembly comprising: an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount containing the outlet port and mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first of the manifold wall through-holes while disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount containing the inlet port and mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a second of the manifold wall through-holes while leaving the inlet port open to the external space, the first mounting comprising a drawn metal member comprising at least one of an axially extending, cylindrical side wall containing the outlet port and a transverse end wall extending radially outward from the side wall, and the second mount extending entirely within the internal manifold space.
- 7. The assembly of claim 6, in which the drawn metal member comprises, as repective formations thereof, both the cylindrical side wall and the transverse end wall.
- 8. An assembly comprising; an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an emission control valve, the manifold comprising a wall separating internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving gases, an outlet port delivering gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling the flow of gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount containing the outlet port and mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first of the manifold wall through-holes while disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount containing the inlet port and mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a second of the manifold wall through-holes while leaving the inlet port open to the external space, the second mount extending entirely within the internal manifold space, and the first mount comprising a formed member comprising at least one of an axially extending, cylindrical side wall containing the outlet port and a transverse end wall extending radially outward from the side wall.
- 9. The assembly of claim 8, in which the drawn metal member comprises, as repective formations thereof, both the cylindrical side wall and the transverse end wall.
- 10. An assembly comprising; an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an emission control valve, the manifold comprising a wall separating internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving gases, an outlet port delivering gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling the flow of gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount containing the outlet port and mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first of the manifold wall through-holes while disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount containing the inlet port and mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a second of the manifold wall through-holes while leaving the inlet port open to the external space, wherein each mount comprises a fastening system that is operable from the external space to fasten the respective mount to the respective opposite wall portion, and wherein the fastening system for the second mount passes freely through the manifold wall and securingly engages the second mount in the internal manifold wall space.
- 11. An assembly as set forth in claim 10, in which each fastening system comprises at least one headed fastening element having a head exposed to the external space.
- 12. A method of assembling an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and in intake manifold, the method comprising:
- providing an EGR valve having a body, and inlet port, and an outlet port;
- providing an engine intake manifold having a wall separating a internal manifold space from an external space;
- providing respective through-holes in respective opposite portions of the manifold wall;
- assembling the EGR valve and the intake manifold together, including disposing the outlet port within the internal manifold space by passing the outlet port through one of the through-holes;
- closing, by respective closures, each of the through-holes between the respective manifold wall portion and the EGR valve while leaving the inlet port exposed to the external space; and
- fastening the respective closures to the manifold by operating respective fastening systems from the external space, at least one of the fastening systems passing freely through the manifold wall and securingly engaging a respective closure in the internal manifold wall space.
- 13. A method as set forth in claim 12, including assembling the respective closures to the EGR valve before the intake manifold and the EGR valve are assembled together.
- 14. An assembly comprising: an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first one of the manifold wall through-holes and disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount comprising a surrounding wall in closure of a second one of the manifold wall through-holes and an inlet tube that contains the inlet port, the surrounding wall extending entirely within the internal manifold space and defining with the inlet tube an annular space surrounding the inlet tube and opening to the external space.
- 15. An assembly as set forth in claim 14, in which the surrounding wall comprises an axial wall portion extending from the second of the manifold wall through-holes and a radial wall portion extending radially inward from the axial wall portion to the inlet tube.
- 16. An assembly as set forth is claim 1, in which the intake manifold comprises plastic.
- 17. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, in which the EGR valve mechanism comprises a valve element that is positionable relative to a valve seat.
- 18. An assembly as set forth in claim 17, in which the valve seat is disposed on one of the inlet tube and the surrounding wall of the second mount.
- 19. An assembly as set forth in claim 18, in which the valve seat is disposed on the inlet tube.
- 20. An assembly as set forth in claim 19, in which the first mount comprises an outlet tube containing the outlet port.
- 21. An assembly as set forth in claim 20, in which the outlet tube comprises an axial wall portion and a radial wall portion, the EGR valve mechanism comprises a valve element that is positionable relative to a valve seat, and the valve seat is disposed on the radial wall portion of the outlet tube.
- 22. An assembly as set forth in claim 21, in which the outlet port is disposed on the axial wall portion of the outlet tube.
- 23. An assembly comprising; an internal combustion engine intake manifold and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve recirculating engine exhaust gases into the manifold, the manifold comprising a wall separating an internal manifold space from an external space, the wall comprising opposite wall portions each containing a respective through-hole, the EGR valve comprising a body having an inlet port receiving engine exhaust gases, an outlet port delivering engine exhaust gases to the internal manifold space, a valve mechanism controlling flow of engine exhaust gases from the inlet port to the outlet port, a first mount mounting the valve body on the manifold wall in closure of a first one of the manifold wall through-holes and disposing the outlet port in the internal manifold space, and a second mount comprising a surrounding wall in closure of a second one of the manifold wall through-holes and an inlet tube that contains the inlet port, the surrounding wall of the second mount coacting with the inlet tube and the manifold wall to leave the inlet port open to the external space, an the surrounding wall of the second mount extending entirely within the internal manifold space.
- 24. An assembly as set forth in claim 23, in which the surrounding wall comprises an axial wall portion extending from the second of the manifold wall through-holes and a radial wall portion extending radially inward from the axial wall portion to the inlet tube.
- 25. An assembly as set forth in claim 23, in which the EGR valve mechanism comprises a valve element that is positionable relative to a valve seat.
- 26. An assembly as set forth in claim 25, in which the valve seat is disposed on one of the inlet tube and the surrounding wall of the second mount.
- 27. An assembly as set forth in claim 26, in which the valve seat is disposed on the inlet tube.
- 28. An assembly as set forth in claim 23, in which the first mount comprises an outlet tube containing the outlet port.
- 29. An assembly as set forth in claim 28, in which the outlet tube comprises an axial wall portion and a radial wall portion, the EGR valve mechanism comprises a valve element that is positionable relative to a valve seat, and the valve seat is disposed on the radial wall portion of the outlet tube.
- 30. An assembly as set forth in claim 29, in which the outlet port is disposed on the axial wall portion of the outlet tube.
