Claims
- 1. A method, comprising an act of:
applying ultraviolet light to a region of tissue on a patient to sterilize or disinfect the region.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising an act of:
applying the ultraviolet light to a portion of a catheter, the catheter being inserted in the patient in the region, to sterilize or disinfect the portion of the catheter.
- 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising an act of:
creating an incision in the region of tissue.
- 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising an act of:
sensing whether a bandage covers at least a portion of the region of tissue, before the act of applying ultraviolet light.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the act of sensing includes electrically sensing whether a bandage covers at least a portion of the region of tissue, before the act of applying ultraviolet light.
- 6. The method of claim 4, further comprising an act of:
adjusting an intensity of the ultraviolet light, based on whether a bandage covering at least a portion of the region of tissue is sensed.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of applying ultraviolet light includes applying ultraviolet light continuously.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of applying ultraviolet light includes applying ultraviolet light as one or more flashes.
- 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising an act of:
applying a sterilizing or disinfecting chemical to the region.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the act of applying includes applying a sterilizing or disinfecting chemical to the region before the act of applying ultraviolet light.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the act of applying includes applying alcohol to the region.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein the act of applying includes applying betadine to the region.
- 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the act of applying includes applying providone iodine to the region.
- 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the act of applying includes applying a chemical including chlorhexidine.
- 15. The method of claim 1, further including an act of forming a light seal to substantially prevent light from illuminating an area outside of the region of tissue during sterilization or disinfection.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the act of forming a light seal includes forming a light seal that contacts, at least in part, a portion of a catheter.
- 17. The method of claim 15, wherein the act of forming a light seal includes forming a light seal that contacts, at least in part, a bandage.
- 18. The method of claim 15, wherein the act of forming a light seal includes forming a light seal that contacts, at least in part, the region of tissue.
- 19. The method of claim 15, wherein the act of forming a light seal includes forming a light seal that contacts, at least in part, a light-directing component.
- 20. An apparatus for sterilizing or disinfecting a region of tissue of a patient, the apparatus comprising:
a housing; and an ultraviolet light-emitting lamp disposed within the housing; wherein the housing includes a light seal to substantially prevent light from penetrating beyond the housing during sterilization or disinfection.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the light seal is formed at least in part of a compliant material.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising a safety interlock to prevent the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp from emitting light when a particular level of light is detected inside the housing.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising:
one or more pressure sensors coupled to the light seal; and a safety interlock to prevent the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp from emitting light when the one or more pressure sensors on the light seal is/are not activated.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising means for securing the housing to the patient.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising a timer to control power to the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp.
- 26. A device for use with a catheter and an ultraviolet light-emitting lamp, comprising:
a reflective surface adapted to be coupled to the catheter to direct light emitted by the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp to a portion of the catheter near an entrance site of the catheter.
- 27. The device of claim 26, wherein the reflective surface adapted to be coupled to the catheter directs light emitted by the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp to a region not directly illuminated by the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp.
- 28. An apparatus for sterilizing or disinfecting a sterilization/disinfection device, comprising:
a self-sterilizing attachment to form a substantially light-tight seal with the sterilization/disinfection device; and a reflective surface coupled to the self-sterilizing attachment, wherein the reflective surface directs light emitted from the sterilization/disinfection device back onto the sterilization/disinfection device.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the self-sterilizing attachment is coupled to the sterilization/disinfection device.
- 30. A method of sterilizing or disinfecting a sterilization/disinfection device including an ultraviolet light-emitting lamp using a self-sterilizing attachment, comprising acts of:
forming a substantially light-tight seal between the sterilization/disinfection device and the self-sterilizing attachment; emitting light from the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp; and directing the light emitted from the ultraviolet light-emitting lamp back onto the sterilization/disinfection device.
