Claims
- 1. A method for positioning a plurality of cassettes for loading and unloading, wherein each of the plurality of cassettes contains a supply of plates and is supported on a support table, movable along a vertical axis of an automated plate handler, comprising the steps of:
- a. automatically positioning the support tables with the cassettes of plates supported thereon along the vertical axis, to thereby place a selected cassette in a first position;
- b. positioning a loading and unloading platform which extends out from the automated plate handler so as to substantially form an extension of the support table supporting the selected cassette in the first position; and,
- c. moving the selected cassette from the support table to the loading and unloading platform to thereby place the selected cassette in a second position at which the selected cassette is to be, one of, loaded or unloaded.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of loading the selected cassette in the second position with another supply of plates for movement to the first position.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, further comprising the step of, after loading the selected cassette in the second position with another supply of plates, guiding the selected cassette from the second position to the first position.
- 4. The method according to claim 3 wherein the first position is a reference position for positioning the selected cassette with respect to the plate handler so that plates inside the selected cassette can be delivered in register from the selected cassette into an imaging engine attached to the automated plate handler and wherein the step of guiding the selected cassette from the unloading platform to the support table includes the step of locating the cassette at the second position to the first position places the selected cassette at the reference position.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the step of guiding the selected cassette from the second position to the first position further comprises the steps of:
- (a) providing the selected cassette with guide members for guiding the selected cassette;
- (b) providing first rows of wheels mounted for rotation with respect to the loading and unloading platform and aligned for mating with the cassette guide members, said first rows of wheels cooperating with the guide members to register the selected cassette for movement to the first position;
- (c) providing second rows of wheels mounted for rotation with respect to the support table and aligned for mating with the selected cassette guide members said second rows of wheels cooperating with said first rows of wheels and the guide members to register the selected cassette with respect to the automated plate handler; and,
- (d) advancing the selected cassette from the second position to the first position by a rolling contact between the guide members and the first and second rows of wheels.
- 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of removing the selected cassette in the second position from the loading and unloading platform; and, mounting another cassette filled with another supply of plates onto the loading and unloading platform in the second position for movement to the first position.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, further comprising the step of, after mounting the another cassette filled with another supply of plates onto the loading and unloading platform, guiding the another cassette from the second position to the first position.
- 8. The method according to claim 7 wherein the first position is a reference position for positioning the another cassette with respect to the plate handler so that plates inside the another cassette can be delivered in register from the another cassette into an imaging engine attached to the automated plate handler and wherein the step of guiding the another cassette from the second position to the first position includes the step of locating the another cassette at the reference position.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the step of guiding the another cassette from the second position to the first position further comprises the steps of:
- (a) providing the another cassette with guide members for guiding the another cassette;
- (b) providing first rows of wheels mounted for rotation with respect to the loading and unloading platform and aligned for mating with the another cassette guide members, said first rows of wheels cooperating with the guide members to register the another cassette for movement to the first position;
- (c) providing second rows of wheels mounted for rotation with respect to the support table and aligned for mating with the another cassette guide members, said second rows of wheels cooperating with the first rows of wheels and the guide members to register the another cassette with respect to the automated plate handler;
- (d) loading the another cassette onto the support table by aligning the guide members with the first rows of wheels; and,
- (e) advancing the another cassette along the support table to the reference position by using a rolling contact between the guide members and the first and second rows of wheels.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the automated plate handler includes doors and covers and wherein the loading and unloading platform is incorporating into the doors and covers such that the loading and unloading platform comprises a door which serves as the loading and unloading platform when in an open position and wherein the step of positioning the loading and unloading platform is performed by opening the door.
- 11. The method according to claim 1 wherein the automatic plate handler includes a control terminal for providing an operator interface and for controlling the automated plate handler, further comprising the steps of:
- (a) determining if a required plate size is unavailable within the automated plated handler; and,
- (b) notifying an operator to load a supply of the unavailable plate size into the automatic plate handler.
- 12. The method according to claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of cassettes includes a removable cassette cover and wherein the automatic plate handler includes a device for supporting the cassette cover of the selected cassette further comprising the steps of:
- a. removing the cassette cover of the selected;
- (b) positioning the selected cassette in the first position to provide access to a plate inside the selected cassette; and,
- (c) replacing the cassette cover of the selected cassette prior to selecting another cassette for movement to the first position.
