Claims
- 1. A process for making an investment casting mold having low reactivity with reactive metals comprising mixing finely divided yttria with an acid and an inert organic solvent, to thereby form a refractory coating composition, applying said coating composition to a shaped pattern, drying and permitting the composition to set, and heating the resulting coated pattern to a sufficiently high temperature thereby sintering said coating composition.
- 2. The process according to claim 1 further comprising adding an additional refractory material selected from the group consisting of yttrium oxide, zirconium oxide, fused yttrium oxide, fused zirconium oxide, fused stabilized zirconium oxide, a fused homogeneous mixture of yttrium oxide and zirconium oxide to said coating composition.
- 3. The process according to claim 2, further comprising applying a plurality of coatings to the pattern.
- 4. A process for making a ceramic mold or core comprising applying a refractory coating composition to a pattern or mold, allowing the coating composition to dry, applying to the dried coating composition a plurality of coatings of the same or different coating compositions, firing the coated dried coating composition to form said mold or core, said coating composition comprising a slurry of yttria, an acid and an inert organic solvent.
- 5. The process according to claim 4 further comprising adding to the coating composition an additional refractory selected from the group consisting of yttrium oxide, zirconium oxide, fused yttrium oxide, fused zirconium oxide, fused stabilized zirconium oxide, a fused homogeneous mixture of yttrium oxide end zirconium oxide.
- 6. A process according to claim 5, wherein said slurry contains a minimal amount of water.
- 7. A process according to claim 4, wherein said slurry contains a minimal amount of water.
- 8. A process for making a ceramic core comprising coating a core mold with a refractory composition comprising a slurry of yttria, an acid, and an inert organic solvent in an amount to wet said core mold, thereafter adding to said core mold a castable second refractory composition capable of gelling, permitting the second refractory composition to gel to thereby form a core, wherein said yttria containing-coating adheres to said core, removing said core from said core mold and firing to bond said yttria containing coating with said second refractory composition.
- 9. The process according to claim 8 further comprising applying a stucco to the yttria coated core mold surface prior to adding said second refractory composition.
- 10. A process according to claim 9, wherein said slurry contains a minimal amount of water.
- 11. A process according to claim 8, wherein said slurry contains a minimal amount of water.
