Claims
- 1. A method for sensing uterine activity in a gravid patient comprising sensing changes in the volume of blood in the abdominal wall of the patient, and on the basis of the sensed changes, detecting the patient's uterine activity.
- 2. Apparatus for monitoring uterine activity of a gravid patient comprising:(a) means for applying light to the patient's abdominal wall so that the light will pass into the tissues of the patient's abdomen; (b) means for detecting light which has passed into the tissues of the abdomen and has been reflected back to the surface of the abdomen; (c) means for transforming the detected light into an electrical signal; and (d) means for displaying the electrical signal so that uterine activity can be detected.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the light has a wavelength in a range where the absorptions of at least some hemoglobin fractions of blood are similar.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the light has a wavelength in a range where the absorptions of the major hemoglobin fractions are similar.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the light has a wavelength in a range where the absorptions of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin are similar.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the light has a wavelength in the range from about 500 nm to about 600 nm.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the light has a wavelength of about 800 nm.
- 8. Apparatus for monitoring uterine activity of a gravid patient comprising:(a) means for applying light of a first wavelength to the patient's abdominal wall so that the light will pass into the tissues of the patient's abdomen; (b) means for detecting light of the first wavelength which has passed into the tissues of the abdomen and has been reflected back to the surface of the abdomen; (c) means for transforming the detected light of the first wavelength into a first electrical signal; (d) means for applying light of a second wavelength to the patient's abdominal wall so that the light will pass into the tissues of the patient's abdomen; (e) means for detecting light of the second wavelength which has passed into the tissues of the abdomen and has been reflected back to the surface of the abdomen; (f) means for transforming the detected light of the second wavelength into a second electrical signal; (g) means for processing the first and second electrical signals to form a third electrical signal; and (h) means for displaying the third electrical signal so that uterine activity can be detected.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein light having the first wavelength is absorbed by blood to a different extent than light having the second wavelength.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the processing means determines the difference between the first and second electrical signals.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein processing means determines the ratio of the first and second electrical signals.
- 12. Apparatus for monitoring uterine activity of a gravid patient comprising:(a) means for applying light of at least one wavelength to at least two locations on the patient's abdominal wall, so that the light will pass into the tissues of the patient's abdomen at each of said locations; (b) means for detecting light which has passed into the tissues of the abdomen and has been reflected back to the surface of the abdomen at each of said locations; and (c) means for transforming the detected light for each of said locations into an electrical signal, one signal for each of said locations.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising means for displaying at least one of the electrical signals produced by the means for transforming.
- 14. An apparatus for sensing uterine activity in a gravid patient comprising:a light source adapted to be mounted on an external surface of the abdominal wall so that light from the light source passes into tissues of the abdominal wall; a light detector circuit operable to receive the light and to produce an electrical signal that is indicative of the volume of blood in the abdominal wall; and an electronic circuit coupled to the light source and the light detector circuit, the electronic circuit being operable to supply power to the light source and to receive the electrical signal, and operable to provide an indication of uterine activity on the basis of the electrical signal.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the light source provides light having a wavelength in a range where the absorptions of at least some hemoglobin fractions of blood are similar.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the light source provides light having a wavelength in a range where the absorptions of the major hemoglobin fractions are similar.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the light source provides light having a wavelength in a range where the absorptions of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin are similar.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the light source provides light having a wavelength in the range from about 500 nm to about 600 nm.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the light source provides light having a wavelength of about 800 nm.
- 20. An apparatus for sensing uterine activity in a gravid patient comprising:a light source adapted to be mounted on an external surface of the abdominal wall so that the first and second lights pass into the tissues of the abdominal wall, the first and second light sources being operable to produce light at first and second wavelengths, respectively, that are selected so that the absorption of light of the first and second wavelengths passing into the abdominal wall is substantially insensitive to the level of oxygen saturation of blood in the tissues; and a light detector circuit operable to receive the light of first and second wavelengths, the light detector circuit operable to produce a first electrical signal in response to receiving the light of the first wavelength, and operable to produce a second electrical signal in response to receiving the light of the second wavelength; and an electronic circuit coupled to the light source and the light detector circuit, the electronic circuit being operable to supply power to the light source and to receive the first and second electrical signals, and operable to produce a third electrical signal corresponding to the first and second electrical signals, the electronic circuit providing and indication of uterine activity on the basis of the third electrical signal.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein light source produces the first light at a wavelength that is absorbed by the blood to a different extent than the second light.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the electronic circuit determines the difference between the first and second electrical signals and produces the third electrical signal corresponding to the difference.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the electronic circuit determines the ratio between the first and second electrical signals and produces the third electrical signal corresponding to the ratio.
- 24. An apparatus for sensing uterine activity in a gravid patient comprising:a first light source adapted to be mounted on an external surface of the abdominal wall at a first location so that light from the first light source passes into the tissues of the abdominal wall at the first location; a second light source adapted to be mounted on an external surface of the abdominal wall at a second location so that light from the second light source passes into the tissues of the abdominal wall at the second location; a light detector circuit operable to receive the light from the first and second light sources, the light detector circuit operable to produce a first and second electrical signals that are indicative of the volume of blood in the abdominal wall at the first and second locations respectively; and an electronic circuit coupled to the first and second light sources and the light detector circuit, the electronic circuit being operable to supply power to the first and second light sources and to receive the first and second electrical signals, and operable to provide and indication of uterine activity at the first and second locations on the basis of the first and second electrical signals respectively.
- 25. An apparatus for sensing uterine activity in a gravid patient comprising:a light source adapted to be mounted on an external surface of the abdominal wall and operable to produce a first light having a first wavelength and a second light having a second wavelength, so that the first and second lights pass into the tissues of the abdominal wall, the first and second wavelengths being selected so that the absorption of light of the first and second wavelengths passing into the abdominal wall is substantially insensitive to the level of oxygen saturation of blood in the tissues; and a light detector circuit operable to receive the light of first and second wavelengths, the light detector circuit operable to produce a first electrical signal in response to receiving the light of the first wavelength, and operable to produce a second electrical signal in response to receiving the light of the second wavelength, and operable to produce a third electrical signal corresponding to the first and second electrical signals, the light detector circuit providing an indication of uterine activity on the basis of the third electrical signal.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein light source produces the first light at a wavelength that is absorbed by the blood to a different extent than the second light.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein the light detector circuit determines the difference between the first and second electrical signals and produces the third electrical signal corresponding to the difference.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein the light detector circuit determines the ratio between the first and second electrical signals and produces the third electrical signal corresponding to the ratio.
