Claims
- 1. A monoclonal antibody specific for an antigen of FIGS 11A and 11B, and said antigen being testis specific and persistent throughout spermiogenesis, and wherein said antibody has the epitopic binding characteristics of the monoclonal antibody expressed by cell line ATCC HB 10039.
- 2. The monoclonal antibody of claim 1, wherein said antibody is complexed with a reporter moiety selected from the group consisting of an enzyme, a dye and a radioactive label.
- 3. The monoclonal antibody of claim 1, wherein said monoclonal antibody is affixed to a solid support.
- 4. The monoclonal antibody of claim 3, wherein said solid support is an immunoaffinity bead.
- 5. The monoclonal antibody of claim 2, wherein the monoclonal antibody is the antibody expressed by cell line ATCC HB 10039.
- 6. An immunochemical assay for determining the fertility or infertility of a male human individual, comprising:
- obtaining a semen sample from said individual,
- combining said semen sample with a monoclonal antibody of claim 1, under conditions which permit said monoclonal antibody to bind to an antigen present in the sample, said antigen being testis specific and persistent throughout spermiogensis, and
- observing said semen sample combined with said antibody to determine the presence of said binding, wherein the occurrence of said binding is indicative of fertility in said individual, and the absence of said binding is indicative of infertility in said individual.
- 7. The assay of claim 6, wherein said monoclonal antibody is the monoclonal antibody expressed by cell line ATCC HB 10039.
- 8. A method of inhibiting fertilization of ova in a female mammal, comprising immunizing said female with an amount of an antigen sufficient to induce the production of antibodies thereto in said female, wherein said antigen of FIGS. 11A and 11B, is an intra-acrosomal mammalian sperm antigen that remains associated with said mammalian sperm after the acrosome reaction, wherein said antigen is bound by monoclonal antibodies produced by cell line ATCC HB 10039 and wherein said female is sufficiently immunized so as to produce a fertilization-inhibiting amount of circulating antibody.
- 9. A contraceptive composition comprising an amount of the antibody of claim 1 in a carrier compatible with a vaginal environment, wherein said amount is effective to promote binding of said antibody to substantially all sperm present in a ejaculate of a mature male of the species of said female.
- 10. A method of inhibiting fertilization of a mammalian female, comprising of applying the contraceptive composition of claim 9 to the vagina of said female in advance of intercourse.
