- 1. A process for thermal imaging scanning of a swaged heater for an anode sub-assembly of a hollow cathode assembly (HCA), said swaged heater having a sheath and said sheath having inner and outer surfaces wherein the outer surface of said sheath comprises the exterior surface of said swaged heater, comprising the steps of:a) suspending the swaged heater having a heater center conductor with two ends by alligator clips attached to the conductor at either end to support the swaged heater without contact of the swaged heater with any other object to avoid creation of a heat conduction path and invalidation of temperature distribution results; b) furnishing a power supply, said power supply having a positive terminal and a negative terminal, and connecting one end of the swaged heater center conductor to the positive terminal of the power supply, connecting the negative terminal of the power supply to the current output terminal of a Fluke Model 77 Series II Multimeter, and connecting the current input terminal of the Fluke Model 77 Series II Multimeter to the second end of the swaged heater center conductor, to measure current delivered to the swaged heater; c) orienting an Inframetrics Model 600 Thermal Imaging Radiometer, said radiometer having a variable emissivity parameter, so that the temperature distribution throughout the entire length of the swaged heater can be scanned; d) setting the emissivity parameter of the radiometer to 1.0 with a black cloth as a black background to reduce background emissions; e) raising the current to 2.40 amperes with the power supply in current control mode, for approximately ten minutes to a swaged heater temperature of approximately 17-23 degrees C.; and f) measuring the swaged heater temperature and temperature along the length of the swaged heater sheath using the thermal imaging radiometer, whereupon the temperature distribution along the length of the swaged heater shall be less than ±5 degrees C.
