Claims
- 1. A method of processing calls in a switch of a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:establishing an association in the switch between a first user terminal and at least one other terminal of the system, based on proximity of the first terminal to the other terminal, wherein the proximity of the first terminal to the other terminal is determined at least in part utilizing a cell identifier of the first terminal and a cell identifier of the other terminal, the cell identifier for a given one of the terminals specifying a cell of the system in which the given terminal is currently located; and permitting a user assigned to the first terminal to access functions of the other terminal while the association exists.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further including the step of terminating the association between the first terminal and the other terminal when the first terminal is no longer within sufficient proximity to the other terminal.
- 3. An apparatus for processing calls in a switch of a communication system, comprising:a memory for storing information regarding an association established in the switch between a first user terminal and at least one other terminal of the system, wherein the association is established based on proximity of the first terminal to the other terminal, and wherein the proximity of the first terminal to the other terminal is determined at least in part utilizing a cell identifier of the first terminal and a cell identifier of the other terminal, the cell identifier for a given one of the terminals specifying a cell of the system in which the given terminal is currently located; and a processor coupled to the memory and operative to process calls in the switch such that a user assigned to the first terminal can access functions of the other terminal while the association exists.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the processor is further operative to terminate the association between the first terminal and the other terminal when the first terminal is no longer within sufficient proximity to the other terminal.
- 5. A method of processing calls in a switch of a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:detecting a signal transmitted by a device associated with a user of the system, the signal including information identifying the user; establishing an association between a first terminal of the system assigned to the user and a second terminal of the system which is determined to be in proximity to that user based on the detected signal, wherein the proximity of the second terminal to the user is determined at least in part, utilizing a cell identifier of the second terminal and a cell identifier of the device associated with the user, the cell identifier for a given one of the second terminal and the device specifying a cell of the system in which the given terminal or device is currently located.
- 6. The method of claim 5 further including the step of routing an incoming call directed to the user to the second terminal.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the detecting step includes detecting a signal transmitted by a beacon device carried by the user.
- 8. The method of claim 5 further including the step of permitting the user to access user-defined functions of the first terminal at the second terminal.
- 9. The method of claim 5 wherein the detecting step is initiated in response to entry of a proximity-based registration command by the user.
- 10. An apparatus for processing calls in a switch of a communication system, comprising:a processor for establishing an association between a first terminal of the system assigned to a given user and a second terminal of the system which is determined to be in proximity to that user, based on detection of an identifying signal transmitted by a device associated with that user, wherein the proximity of the second terminal to the user is determined at least in part utilizing a cell identifier of the second terminal and a cell identifier of the device associated with the user, the cell identifier for a given one of the second terminal and the device specifying a cell of the system in which the given terminal or device is currently located; and a memory for storing information regarding the association between the first terminal and the second terminal.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the processor is further operative to route an incoming call directed to the user to the second terminal.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the signal is transmitted by a beacon device carried by the user.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the user is permitted to access user-defined functions of the first terminal at the second terminal.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the processor is further operative to initiate detection of the signal in response to entry of a proximity-based registration command by the user.
