Claims
- 1. In a respiratory measurement system, an infrared gas content analyzer for analyzing the content of a selected respiratory gas, said gas content analyzer comprising:
an infrared emitter; an infrared detector spaced apart from said infrared emitter; said infrared emitter having a polished elliptical reflecting surface, said polished elliptical reflecting surface defining a central longitudinal axis, a first focal point and a second focal point, said infrared emitter including an elongated filament oriented lengthwise along the central longitudinal axis with a central portion of the filament positioned at the first focal point; and, said infrared detector having a light sensitive surface positioned at the second focal point; whereby the amount of light energy from the infrared emitter that impinges upon the infrared detector is proportional to the content of the selected respiratory gas passed between the infrared emitter and infrared detector.
- 2. The gas content analyzer of claim 1, wherein the infrared detector consists of two light sensitive surfaces arranged in series, the first light sensitive surface receiving light energy from the infrared emitter and the second light sensitive surface being shielded from light energy emitted by the infrared emitter, whereby the difference between the amount of light energy detected by the first and second light sensitive surfaces is proportional to the content of the selected respiratory gas passed between the infrared emitter and infrared detector.
- 3. The gas content analyzer of claim 2, further comprising a light filter between the infrared emitter and the infrared detector, said light filter permitting the passage therethrough of only a specified wavelength of infrared light.
- 4. The gas content analyzer of claim 3, wherein the light filter is comprised of a thin sapphire window pane.
- 5. The gas content analyzer of claim 1, further comprising:
a housing, said housing including first, second and third compartments, the second compartment being between the first and third compartments; said infrared emitter being mounted in the first compartment, and said infrared detector being mounted in the third compartment; and a gas inlet tube for introducing a respiratory gas sample into the second compartment and a gas outlet tube for exhausting said respiratory gas sample from the second compartment.
- 6. The gas content analyzer of claim 5, further comprising;
an analyzer module for containing components of said respiratory measurement system; and, a flexible electronic circuit strip wrapped around a portion of the housing for electrically connecting the infrared emitter and infrared detector to the analyzer module.
- 7. The gas content analyzer of claim 6, further comprising; wherein the circuit strip further comprises electrical barometric pressure and temperature compensating subcomponents
- 8. In a respiratory measurement system analyzer module, an infrared gas content analyzer subassembly for analyzing the content of a selected respiratory gas, said gas content analyzer subassembly comprising:
a housing including first, second and third compartments, the second compartment being between the first and third compartments; an infrared light source in the first compartment; a gas inlet tube for introducing a gas sample into the second compartment and a gas outlet tube for exhausting said gas sample from the second compartment; an infrared detector in the third compartment; and a flexible electronic circuit strip wrapped around a portion of the housing for electrically connecting the infrared light source and infrared detector to the analyzer module.
- 9. The gas content analyzer subassembly of claim 8, wherein the circuit strip further comprises electrical barometric pressure and temperature compensating subcomponents.
- 10. The gas content analyzer subassembly of claim 8, wherein:
said infrared light source includes a polished elliptical reflecting surface, said polished elliptical reflecting surface defining a central longitudinal axis, a first focal point and a second focal point, and said infrared light source further includes an elongated filament oriented lengthwise along the central longitudinal axis with a central portion of the filament positioned at the first focal point; and, said infrared detector includes a light sensitive surface positioned at the second focal point; whereby the amount of light energy from the infrared light source that impinges upon the infrared detector is proportional to the content of the selected respiratory gas passed between the infrared emitter and infrared detector.
- 11. The gas content analyzer of claim 8, wherein the infrared detector consists of two light sensitive surfaces arranged in series, the first light sensitive surface being positioned to receive heat energy from the infrared light source and the second light sensitive surface being shielded from heat energy emitted by the infrared light source, thereby causing the first and second light sensitive surfaces to become heated at different rates.
- 12. The gas content analyzer of claim 11, wherein the different heating rates between the first and second light sensitive surfaces produces a voltage between them that is proportional to the content of the selected respiratory gas passed between the infrared light source and infrared detector.
- 13. The gas content analyzer of claim 8, further comprising a light filter between the infrared light source and the infrared detector, said light filter permitting the passage therethrough of only a specified wavelength of infrared light.
- 14. The gas content analyzer of claim 13, wherein the light filter is comprised of a thin sapphire window pane.
