- 9. A flexible double bellows seal as recited in claim 6 wherein displacement of the first end ring with respect to the second end ring causes a twisting in one of the bellows and an untwisting the other bellows, the opposing twisting and untwisting of the bellows substantially eliminating the tendency of the flexible double bellows seal to impose rotational and translational forces upon chambers that are attached to each of the end rings.
- 10. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 6 wherein the first and second bellows are formed of an organic film material.
- 11. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 10 wherein the organic film material is selected from the group consisting of polyester, polyethylene and polyimide.
- 12. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 6 wherein the first and second end rings, and the middle ring are formed of materials that have low out-gassing and non-permeable characteristics.
- 13. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 12 wherein the first and second end rings, and the middle ring are formed of materials selected from the group consisting of aluminum, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, ceramics, and plastics.
- 14. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 13 wherein the first and second end rings, and the middle ring are formed of stainless steel.
- 15. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 6 wherein the first and second bellows have pleats that are uniform in size and spacing.
- 16. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 6 further comprising:
a plurality of triangular shaped stiffeners attached to each of the first and second bellows, each of the bellows having folds along spaces between each of the stiffeners such that substantially helical pleats are formed within each of the bellows.
- 17. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 16 wherein the stiffeners are attached to an outside surface of each of the bellows.
- 18. A double bellows seal as recited in claim 16 wherein each of the stiffeners has a triangular outline shape.
- 19. A flexible double bellows seal used to connect two chambers such that the flexible double bellows seal transmits a minimal amount of force from one chamber to the other, the flexible double bellows seal comprising:
a first bellows formed of a cylindrical piece of flexible material having two open ends, each of the open ends having been rotated in opposite directions such that pleats in the flexible material run from one open end to the other open end in a helical fashion; a second bellows formed of a cylindrical piece of flexible material having two open ends, each of the open ends having been rotated in opposite directions such that pleats in the flexible material run from one open end to the other open end in a helical fashion; a rigid middle ring having a first side and a second side, one of the open ends of the first bellows being connected to the first side of the middle ring, and one of the open ends of the second bellows being connected to the second side of the middle ring such that the first and second bellows have pleats that run in opposite helical directions; a first end ring connected to the open end of the first bellows opposite the end that is connected to the middle ring; and a second end ring connected to the open end of the second bellows opposite the end that is connected to the middle ring.
