- a timer, connected to said sensor, for generating a first measured duration that varies proportionally with the duration of the high amplitude segments and a second measured duration that varies proportionally with the duration of the low amplitude segments;
- means for classifying a high amplitude segment into a first category when said first and second measured durations, corresponding to said high amplitude segment and a subsequent adjacent low amplitude segment, satisfy a classification test; and
- a counter to count said high amplitude segments classified into said first category, wherein said high amplitude segments classified into said first category correspond to said spoken itemized expressions.
- 2. A system as in claim 1, wherein said means for classifying comprises:
- means for determining a ratio of said first and second durations; and
- means for comprising said ratio to a selected value and for classifying said high amplitude segment into said first category when said ratio has a selected relationship to said selected value.
- 3. A speech categorization system for recognizing at least one spoken itemized expression appearing in a communication, comprising:
- an amplifier receiving said communication and amplifying said speech to produce a speech signal;
- a comparator connected to said amplifier, said comparator comparing the speech signal to a threshold value and generating a high amplitude signal when the speech signal is greater than the threshold value and generating a low amplitude signal when said speech signal is less than the threshold value;
- a timer for counting the duration of the high amplitude signal and the duration of the low amplitude signal; and
- means for determining if a spoken itemized expression has occurred by relating the duration of the high amplitude signal and the duration of the low amplitude signal.
- 4. A system as in claim 3, wherein said determining means produces an output signal indicative of a spoken itemized expression when the duration of the high amplitude signal is less than the duration of the low amplitude signal.
- 5. A system as in claim 3, further comprising means for comparing the duration of the high amplitude signal with a predetermined period.
- 6. A system as in claim 3, wherein said timer comprises a first timer for counting the duration of the high amplitude signal and a second timer for counting the duration of the low amplitude signal.
- 7. A system as in claim 3, wherein the communication appears on a communication system, and wherein said amplifier connects to the communication system.
- 8. A system as in claim 7, wherein said communication system comprises a telephone line.
- 9. A system as in claim 7, wherein the communication system comprises a radio link.
- 10. A system as in claim 7, wherein the communication system comprises a hard wired link.
- 11. A system as in claim 3, wherein the amplifier provides automatic gain control.
- 12. In a system having a voice processor for processing speech and responsively producing a waveform representing information about said speech, said waveform defining a high amplitude segment above a predetermined reference level and a low amplitude segment below said predetermined reference level, said waveform comprising at least one high amplitude segment and at least one low amplitude segment, at least some of said high amplitude segments indicating speech, at least some of said low amplitude segments indicating periods of non-speech between adjacent speech segments, a speech categorization system for classifying spoken itemized expressions comprising:
- a sensor that senses the waveform;
- a timer, connected to said sensor for generating first and second measured durations, wherein said first measured duration varies as a function of duration of the high amplitude segment, and wherein said second measured durations vary as a function of low amplitude segments; and
- means for classifying a high amplitude segment as a spoken itemized expression based on said first and second measured duration satisfying a classification test.
- 13. A system as claimed in claim 12 wherein said classification means comprises:
- determination means for taking a ratio of said first and second durations; and
- comparison means for comparing said ratio to a selected value and for classifying said high amplitude segment as a spoken itemized expression when said ratio has a selected relationship to said selected value.
- 14. A system as claimed in claim 12 wherein said classification means comprises comparison means for comparing said first and second durations and for classifying said high amplitude segments as a spoken itemized expression when said first duration is less than said second duration.
- 15. A system as claimed in claim 12 further comprising a counter for counting said high amplitude segments classified as spoken itemized expressions.
- 16. A system as claimed in claim 15 further comprising interruption means for interrupting operation of said counter after a selected interval.
- 17. A system as claimed in claim 15 further comprising interruption means for interrupting operation of said counter after a selected number of high amplitude segments have been counted.
