Claims
- 1. A method of making an electroluminescent device, the method comprising:
forming an emitter layer on a donor element by solution coating a solution comprising a light emitting material and a solvent onto the donor element; and selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer from the donor element to a receptor and proximate to a second device layer, wherein the second device layer is incompatible with the solvent.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the light emitting material comprises a light emitting polymer.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the light emitting material comprises a phosphorescing material.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the light emitting material comprises a fluorescing material.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the second device layer comprises a hole transport layer.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising selectively thermal transferring the second device layer on the receptor from a second donor element.
- 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising forming the second device layer on the donor element and wherein selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer comprises selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer and the second device layer to the receptor from the donor element.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein after transfer the second device layer is disposed between the emitter layer and the receptor.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer from the donor element comprises selectively heating the donor element using a thermal print head.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the donor element comprises a substrate and a light-to-heat conversion layer disposed between the substrate and the emitter layer, and wherein selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer comprises selectively exposing the donor element to imaging radiation.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the second device layer is vapor-deposited or vacuum deposited on the emitter layer.
- 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the second device layer is vapor-deposited or vacuum deposited on the receptor.
- 13. A method of making an electroluminescent device, the method comprising:
forming an emitter layer on a donor element by solution coating a solution comprising a light emitting material and a solvent onto the donor element; substantially removing the solvent; forming a second device layer on the emitter layer, wherein the second device layer is incompatible with the solvent of the emitter layer; and selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer and second device layer from the donor element to a receptor.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the second device layer comprises a hole transport layer.
- 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the light emitting material comprises a light emitting polymer.
- 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the light emitting material comprises a phosphorescing material.
- 17. The method of claim 13, wherein the light emitting material comprises a fluorescing material.
- 18. The method of claim 13, wherein selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer and second device layer from the donor element comprises selectively heating the donor element using a thermal print head.
- 19. The method of claim 13, wherein the donor element comprises a substrate and a light-to-heat conversion layer disposed between the substrate and the emitter layer, and wherein selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer and second device layer comprises selectively exposing the donor element to imaging radiation.
- 20. The method of claim 13, wherein the second device layer is vapor-deposited or vacuum deposited on the emitter layer.
- 21. A method of making an electroluminescent device, the method comprising:
forming a first device layer on a donor element by solution coating using a solvent onto the donor element; substantially removing the solvent; forming an emitter layer on the first device layer, wherein the emitter layer comprises a light emitting material and is incompatible with the solvent of the first device layer; and selectively thermal transferring the first device layer and emitter layer from the donor element to a receptor.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the light emitting material comprises a light emitting polymer.
- 23. The method of claim 21, wherein the light emitting material comprises a phosphorescing material.
- 24. The method of claim 21, wherein the light emitting material comprises a fluorescing material.
- 25. The method of claim 21, wherein selectively thermal transferring the first device layer and emitter layer from the donor element comprises selectively heating the donor element using a thermal print head.
- 26. The method of claim 21, wherein the donor element comprises a substrate and a light-to-heat conversion layer disposed between the substrate and the first device layer, and wherein selectively thermal transferring the first device layer and emitter layer comprises selectively exposing the donor element to imaging radiation.
- 27. The method of claim 21, wherein the emitter layer is vapor-deposited or vacuum deposited on the first device layer.
- 28. A method of making an electroluminescent device, the method comprising:
forming a first device layer on a donor element by solution coating using a solvent onto the donor element; and selectively thermal transferring the first device layer from the donor element to a receptor and proximate to an emitter layer, wherein the emitter layer comprises a light emitting material and is incompatible with the solvent.
- 29. The method of claim 28, wherein the light emitting material comprises a light emitting polymer.
- 30. The method of claim 28, wherein the light emitting material comprises a phosphorescing material.
- 31. The method of claim 28, wherein the light emitting material comprises a fluorescing material.
- 32. The method of claim 28, further comprising selectively thermal transferring the emitter layer on the receptor from a second donor element.
- 33. The method of claim 28, further comprising forming the emitter layer on the donor element and wherein selectively thermal transferring the first device layer comprises selectively thermal transferring the first device layer and the emitter layer to the receptor from the donor element.
- 34. The method of claim 28, wherein selectively thermal transferring the first device layer from the donor element comprises selectively heating the donor element using a thermal print head.
- 35. The method of claim 28, wherein the donor element comprises a substrate and a light-to-heat conversion layer disposed between the substrate and the first device layer, and wherein selectively thermal transferring the first device layer comprises selectively exposing the donor element to imaging radiation.
- 36. The method of claim 28, wherein the emitter layer is vapor-deposited or vacuum deposited on the first device layer.
