Claims
- 1. A tool for use in bringing tape having a pattern of apertures into contact with a face of a chuck having an identical pattern of holes so that the apertures are in registration with the holes, said tool comprising;
a stamp selectively movable in a direction perpendicular to the face of the chuck and including a means for accurately positioning the tape with respect to the stamp; a means for accurately positioning the tape and the stamp with respect to the chuck; means for evacuating the space between said stamp and the face of the chuck; and, means for advancing said stamp toward the face of the chuck.
- 2. The tool of claim 2 wherein said means for advancing includes a bellows bearing against said stamp and advancing said stamp toward the face of the chuck as the space between said stamp and the face of the chuck is evacuated.
- 3. A tool for applying tape to a chuck, said chuck having a plurality of holes and having a face, said tool comprising:
a stamp disposed such that the stamp is capable of applying the tape to the face of the chuck, and said stamp being provided with at least one pin; a means for moving the stamp such that the stamp may apply the tape to the chuck; a vacuum chamber, wherein the chuck and the stamp may be disposed within the vacuum chamber; wherein each of the at least one pins is arranged to fit within corresponding holes in the chuck, whereby the position of the stamp relative to the chuck may be fixed when the stamp applies the tape to the chuck.
- 4. The tool of claim 3 wherein the tape is provided with a plurality of holes and the chuck is provided with a plurality of holes and wherein each of the pins is arranged to fit within a separate hole in the tape.
- 5. The tool of claim 4 wherein at least one of the holes in the tape is co-located with at least one of the holes in the chuck.
- 6. The tool of claim 3 wherein the chuck holes extend through the chuck, and wherein the vacuum is applied to the vacuum chamber through the chuck holes.
- 7. The tool of claim 4 wherein the chuck holes extend through the chuck, and wherein the vacuum is applied to the vacuum chamber through the chuck holes.
- 8. The tool of claim 3 further comprising a resilient face layer disposed on the stamp.
- 9. The tool of claim 3 wherein the tape has a chuck side adapted for adhesion to the chuck and a wafer side adapted to receive a wafer, and wherein the tape is provided with a strong adhesive on the chuck side and a weak adhesive on the wafer side.
- 10. The tool of claim 3 wherein the tape has a chuck side adapted for adhesion to the chuck and a wafer side adapted to receive a wafer, and wherein the wafer side is unadhesive.
- 11. The tool of claim 10 wherein the tape is provided with an adhesive on the chuck side.
- 12. The tool of claim 3 wherein the means for moving the stamp comprises a manual means for moving the stamp.
- 13. The tool of claim 3 wherein the means for moving the stamp is located entirely within the vacuum chamber.
- 14. The tool of claim 3 wherein the means for moving the stamp comprises a bellows disposed such the bellows may move the stamp towards the chuck.
- 15. The tool of claim 3 wherein the tape is resilient.
- 16. The tool of claim 3 wherein the chuck holes are blind holes.
- 17. A tool for applying tape to a chuck, said chuck having at least one blind hole and having a face, said tool comprising:
a stamp disposed such that the stamp is capable of applying the tape to the face of the chuck, and said stamp being provided with at least one pin; a means for moving the stamp such that the stamp may apply the tape to the chuck; a vacuum chamber, wherein the chuck and the stamp may be disposed within the vacuum chamber; wherein each of the at least one pins is arranged to fit within corresponding blind holes in the chuck, whereby the position of the stamp relative to the chuck may be fixed when the stamp applies the tape to the chuck; wherein the chuck is porous.
- 18. The tool of claim 17 wherein the tape is porous.
- 19. A tool for applying tape to a chuck, said tool comprising:
a stamp disposed such that the stamp is capable of applying the tape to the face of the chuck; a means for moving the stamp such that the stamp may apply the tape to the chuck; a vacuum chamber, wherein the chuck and the stamp may be disposed within the vacuum chamber; wherein the chuck is porous and the tape comprises a reticulated foam.
- 20. A method of applying an insert to a chuck so that no air is trapped between the insert and the chuck, said method comprising the steps of:
providing a tool for applying an insert to a chuck, said chuck having a plurality of holes and having a face, said tool comprising:
a stamp disposed such that the stamp is capable of applying the insert to the face of the chuck, and said stamp being provided with at least one pin; a means for moving the stamp such that the stamp may apply the insert to the chuck; a vacuum chamber, wherein the chuck and the stamp may be disposed within the vacuum chamber; wherein each of the at least one pins is arranged to fit within corresponding holes in the chuck, whereby the position of the stamp relative to the chuck may be fixed when the stamp applies the insert to the chuck; providing an insert disposed on the stamp; thereafter providing a vacuum within the chamber; and thereafter applying, using the stamp, the insert to the chuck such that each of the at least one pins fits within corresponding holes in the chuck.
- 21. The method of clam 20 wherein the step of providing an insert comprises providing a tape.
