Claims
- 1. An apparatus for generating a pair of variable voltage rails in response to a control signal comprising:
- a pair of opposite polarity field effect transistors having their drains and gates coupled together and providing a positive voltage rail at one source and a negative voltage rail at the other source as the pair of variable voltage rails; and
- a positive voltage source coupled between the one source and a positive terminal of a power supply and a negative voltage source coupled between the other source and a negative terminal of the power supply so that the control signal is added to the positive terminal of the power supply and subtracted from the negative terminal of the power supply to provide a range of voltages for the pair of voltage rails that approaches the power supply voltage.
- 2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein the positive and negative voltage sources comprise:
- a first operational amplifier having a first input coupled to the positive voltage rail and to the control signal, a second input coupled to the drains of the field effect transistors, and an output coupled to the negative voltage rail; and
- a second operational amplifier having a first input coupled to the negative voltage rail and to the positive terminal of the power supply, a second input coupled to the drains of the field effect transistors and to the control signal, and an output coupled to the positive voltage rail.
- 3. An apparatus for generating a pair of variable voltage rails in response to a control signal comprising:
- a Magee emulator having first and second inputs and first and second outputs, the first and second outputs being the pair of variable voltage rails;
- a unity gain buffer amplifier for coupling the control signal to the first input; and
- a positive gain feedback amplifier for coupling the control signal to the second input.
- 4. The apparatus as recited in claim 2 further comprising:
- a first voltage divider coupled to the first input of the first operational amplifier having the control signal as an input for biasing the first input at a point between the control signal and the negative terminal of the power supply;
- a second voltage divider coupled to the second input of the first operational amplifier having the drains of the field effect transistors as input for biasing the second input at a point between the drains of the field effect transistors and the negative terminal of the power supply;
- a third voltage divider coupled to the first input of the second operational amplifier for biasing the first input at a point between the positive and negative terminals of the power supply; and
- a fourth voltage divider coupled to the second input of the second operational amplifier for biasing the second input at a point between the drains of the field effect transistors and the control signal.
- 5. An apparatus for generating a pair of variable voltage rails in response to a control signal comprising:
- a pair of opposite polarity field effect transistors having their drains and gates coupled together and providing a positive voltage rail at one source and a negative voltage rail at the other source as the pair of variable voltage rails;
- a first operational amplifier having a first input coupled to a variable voltage signal that is a combination of a positive power supply voltage and the control signal, a second input coupled to the one source, and to an output, said output providing the positive voltage rail for the pair of voltage rails; and
- a second operational amplifier having a first input coupled to the drains of the field effect transistors, a second input coupled to a reference voltage that is one-half of the positive power supply voltage, and an output coupled to the other source, the output providing the negative voltage for the pair of voltage rails that tracks the positive voltage.
