Claims
- 1. A medical balloon that is expansible from a compact state to an expanded state in a patient's vessel, the exterior surface of said balloon being formed with first and second exterior surface portions, said balloon, in its compact state, essentially exposing only said first exterior surface portions and, in its expanded state, exposing both said first and second exterior surface portions, said first and second external surface portions being conformed with said balloon to have first and second permanent coefficients of sliding friction, respectively, the first and second permanent coefficients of sliding friction being different whereby the first permanent coefficient of sliding friction is determinative of the characteristic of sliding friction when said balloon is in its compact configuration and the second permanent coefficient of sliding friction is substantially determinative of the overall characteristic of sliding friction when said balloon is in its expanded state.
- 2. A medical balloon as recited in claim 1 wherein said balloon lies along an axis and one of said first and second exterior surface portions is formed with spaced ribs that extend circumferentially about the axis thereby to produce an exterior surface portion with a greater coefficient of sliding friction than the coefficient of sliding friction for the other of said exterior surface portions.
- 3. A medical balloon as recited in claim 2 wherein said ribbed surface additionally includes spaced ribs that extend parallel to the axis and intersect said circumferentially extending ribs.
- 4. A medical balloon as recited in claim 1 wherein the exterior surface portion of one of said first and second exterior portions comprises a permanent external coating that provides a permanent coefficient of sliding friction that differs from the permanent coefficient of friction for said other exterior surface portion.
- 5. A medical balloon as recited in claim 4 wherein the exterior surface of the other of said exterior surface portions comprises another permanent coating.
- 6. A medical balloon as recited in claim 1 wherein the first permanent coefficient of sliding friction is less than the second permanent coefficient of sliding friction.
- 7. A medical balloon as recited in claim 1 wherein the first permanent coefficient of sliding friction is greater than the second permanent coefficient of friction.
- 8. A medical balloon as recited in claim 1 wherein one of said first and second exterior surface portions is textured to have a greater permanent coefficient of sliding friction than the permanent coefficient of sliding friction for the other of said exterior surface portions.
- 9. A balloon catheter for insertion in a patient's vessels comprising:
- A) a catheter having a lumen therein, and
- B) an expansible balloon operatively connected with said lumen for selective inflation between compact and expanded conditions, said balloon operatively carried on said catheter with an exterior surface being formed with first and second exterior surface portions, said balloon, in its compact state, essentially exposing only said first exterior surface portions and, in its expanded state, exposing both said first and second exterior surface portions, said first and second exterior surface portions being conformed with said balloon to have first and second permanent coefficients of sliding friction, respectively, the first and second permanent coefficients of sliding friction being different whereby the first permanent characteristic of sliding friction is determinative of the characteristic of sliding friction when said balloon is in its compact configuration and the second permanent characteristic of sliding friction is substantially determinative of the overall characteristic of sliding friction when said balloon is in its expanded state.
- 10. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 9 wherein said balloon lies along an axis and one of said first and second exterior surface portions is formed with spaced ribs that extend circumferentially about the axis whereby one of said first and and second exterior surface portions has a greater permanent coefficient of sliding friction than the other of said first and second exterior surface portions.
- 11. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 10 wherein said ribbed surface additionally includes spaced ribs that extend parallel to the axis and intersect said circumferentially extending ribs.
- 12. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 9 wherein one of said first and and second exterior surface portions comprises a permanent external coating that provides a permanent coefficient of sliding friction that differs from the permanent coefficient of sliding friction of the other of said exterior surface portions.
- 13. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 12 wherein said other of said first and second exterior surface portions comprises another permanent coating having a permanent coefficient of sliding friction that differs from the permanent coefficient of sliding friction produced by said coating on the one exterior surface portion.
- 14. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 9 wherein the first permanent coefficient of sliding friction is less than the second permanent coefficient of sliding friction.
- 15. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 9 wherein the first permanent coefficient of sliding friction is greater than the second permanent coefficient of sliding friction.
- 16. A balloon catheter as recited in claim 9 wherein one of said first and second exterior surface portions is textured to have a greater permanent coefficient of sliding friction than the other of said first and second exterior surface portions.
