Claims
- 1. A substrate-free fiber comprising amorphous boron having a tensile strength greater than about 750 kpsi and up to about 1,100 kpsi.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the diameter of said amorphous boron fiber is from about 7 microns to about 100 microns.
- 3. The fiber of claim 1 wherein said fiber diameter ranges from about 9 microns to about 35 microns.
- 4. The fiber of claim 1 wherein said tensile strength ranges from about 800 kpsi to 1000 kpsi.
- 5. A substrate-free fiber comprising amorphous boron, said fiber having a tensile strength greater than 750 kpsi and up to about 1,100 kpsi and having a diameter from about 7 microns to about 100 microns.
- 6. The fiber of claim 5 wherein said fiber diameter is from about 7 microns to about 35 microns.
- 7. A substrate-free fiber comprising amorphous boron, said fiber formed by laser induced conversion of a vapor into a fiber having a minimum diameter determined by the diffraction limited laser focal spot size by the wavelength of a laser light, said fiber having a tensile strength greater than about 750 kpsi and up to about 1,100 kpsi.
- 8. The fiber of claim 7 wherein the diameter of said amorphous boron fiber is from about 7 microns to about 100 microns.
- 9. The fiber of claim 7 wherein said fiber diameter is from about 7 microns to about 35 microns.
- 10. The fiber of claim 7 wherein said fiber tensile strength is between about 800 kpsi and about 1000 kpsi.
