Claims
- 1. A clamping device for securing an electrical component to a pin grid array (PGA) socket mounted on a component board, said board having pin receiving apertures formed therein, said device comprising:
- a planar, substantially flat base member mounted on the board and having a plurality of conductor pin apertures extending therethrough and aligned with the pin apertures in the board, the PGA socket mounted on the base member and having pins extending therefrom and through the pin apertures in the base member and attached in the pin apertures in the board, an electrical component mounted on the PGA socket and having a plurality of pin connections with the PGA socket, and clamping means attached to the base member and extending therefrom for releasably retaining the electrical component in stacked relationship on the board with the PGA socket and the base member.
- 2. The clamping device of claim 1 wherein said clamping means includes at least one elongated, resilient member.
- 3. The clamping device of claim 1 wherein said clamping means is a spaced apart plurality elongated, resilient clamping projections integrally formed with and extending from said planar base member in a direction substantially perpendicular to said base member, said clamping projections extending a distance sufficient for grasping portions of said electrical component.
- 4. The clamping device of claim 1 wherein said planar base member has a generally rectangular shape and said clamping means includes two opposite, elongated clamping projections integrally formed with and extending from said base member in a direction substantially perpendicular to said base member, said clamping projections extending a distance sufficient to be engaged by an elongated spring-like clip member imposing a retaining force on the stacked component.
- 5. A clamping system for securing an electrical component to a component board for use in a personal computer, said system comprising:
- a pin grid array (PGA) socket mounted on the component board, said board having pin receiving apertures formed therein, a planar, substantially flat base member mounted on the board and having a plurality of conductor pin apertures extending therethrough, and aligned with the pin apertures in the board, the PGA socket mounted on the base member and having pins extending therefrom and through the pin apertures in the base member and attached in the pin apertures in the board, an electrical component releasably mounted on the PGA socket and having a plurality of pin connections with the PGA socket, and an elongated, clamping means attached to the base member and extending therefrom for retaining the electrical component in stacked relationship on the board with the PGA socket and the base member.
- 6. The clamping system of claim 5 wherein said clamping means includes at least one elongated, resilient member.
- 7. The clamping system of claim 5 wherein said clamping means is a spaced apart plurality of elongated, resilient clamping projections integrally formed with and extending from said planar base member in a direction substantially perpendicular to said base member, said clamping projections extending a distance sufficient for grasping portions of said electrical component.
- 8. The clamping system of claim 5 wherein said planar base member has a generally rectangular shape and said clamping means includes two opposite, elongated clamping projections integrally formed with and extending from said base member in a direction substantially perpendicular to said base member, said clamping projections extending a distance sufficient to be engaged by an elongated spring-like clip member imposing a retaining force on the stacked component.
- 9. The clamping system of claim 5 wherein said planar base member is comprised of molded plastic material and said clamping means includes two opposite, diagonally disposed, elongated resilient clamping projections integrally formed with and extending from said base member.
- 10. The system of claim 6 wherein said electrical component is a central processing unit.
- 11. The system of claim 6 wherein said electrical component is a heat sink coupled to a central processing unit.
- 12. A clamping device for securing an electrical component to a pin grid array (PGA) socket mounted on a component board, said board having pin receiving apertures formed therein, said device comprising:
- a base member having a planar and generally flat rectangular shape, mounted on the board and having a plurality of conductor pin apertures extending therethrough and aligned with the pin apertures of the board, the PGA socket mounted on the base member and having pins extending therefrom and through the pin apertures in the base member and attached in the pin apertures in the board, an electrical component releasably mounted on the PGA socket and having a plurality of pin connections with the PGA socket, clamping tab members disposed on opposite sides of said base member and extending from said base member, and an elongated spring-like clip member having opposing inwardly curved end portions depending therefrom, said curved end portions having a length sufficient to extend across said electronic component to said tab members to engage said tab members and impose a retaining force on the stacked component to securely hold said electrical component on the board with said PGA socket and the base member.
