Claims
- 1. An apparatus for detecting the presence of an ultrasonic ophthalmic surgical handpiece electrically isolated from ground and a power source comprising:
- a transformer having a first primary winding, a second primary winding and a secondary winding;
- an alternating current signal source connected to one of the first and second primary windings of the transformer; and
- a detection circuit connected to the second primary winding of the transformer, the detection circuit comprising a comparator to compare a signal representing reflected impedance of a load at the secondary winding of the transformer to a standard signal to determine the presence of the handpiece.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the alternating current signal source is connected to the first primary winding.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the alternating current signal source is connected to the second primary winding.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a relay, activated when a handpiece is detected to connect power to the handpiece through the first primary winding of the transformer.
- 5. An apparatus for detecting the presence of an ultrasonic ophthalmic surgical handpiece electrically isolated from ground and a power source comprising:
- a transformer having first and second primary windings, and a secondary winding;
- an alternating current signal source connected to one end of the second primary winding of the transformer; and
- a detection circuit connected to the end of the second primary winding of the transformer opposite the alternating current signal source, the detection circuit comprising a comparator to compare a signal representing reflected impedance of a load at the secondary winding of the transformer to a standard signal to detect the presence of the handpiece.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 further comprising a relay, activated when a handpiece is detected to connect power to the handpiece through the first primary winding of the transformer.
- 7. An apparatus for detecting the presence of an ultrasonic ophthalmic surgical handpiece electrically isolated from ground and a power source comprising:
- a transformer having a first and second primary windings, and a secondary winding;
- an alternating current signal source connected to the first primary winding of the transformer; and
- a detection circuit connected to the second primary winding of the transformer, the detection circuit comprising a comparator to compare a signal representing reflected impedance of a load at the secondary winding of the transformer to a standard signal to detect the presence of the handpiece.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising a relay, activated when the handpiece is detected to connect power to the handpiece through the first primary winding of the transformer.
- 9. A method for detecting the presence of an ultrasonic ophthalmic surgical handpiece electrically isolated from ground and a power source comprising:
- applying an alternating current electric signal to a primary winding of a transformer having a first and a second primary winding and a secondary winding;
- receiving a second electric signal at the second primary winding determined by the reflected impedance of the load on the secondary winding of the transformer; and
- comparing the second electric signal to a standard to detect the presence of the handpiece.
- 10. The method of claim 9 further comprising the step of activating a relay when the handpiece is detected to connect an electric power source through the first primary winding of the transformer to the handpiece.
