Claims
- 1. A method for managing recording of video programs, the method comprising the steps of:
recording video programs on a video recording medium; storing in a memory index data identifying the location of all the video programs on the recording medium; and backing up the stored index data onto the recording medium as each video program is being recorded thereon.
- 2. The method of claim 1, in which the video programs are recorded on a plurality of cassette tapes.
- 3. The method of claim 2, in which the video programs recorded on the plurality of cassette tapes have a VBI and the backing up step records the index data in the VBI of the video program being recorded.
- 4. The method of claim 2 additionally comprising the step of storing the identification of the last cassette tape on which the index data in the memory was backed up.
- 5. The method of claim 3 additionally comprising after a failure of the memory the step of retrieving the last cassette tape on which the index data in the memory was backed up based on the stored identification and downloading the index data from the last cassette tape to the memory.
- 6. The method of claim 1, in which the backing up step backs up the entire file of the memory data.
- 7. The method of claim 1, in which the backing up step backs up the index data in the memory each time the recording medium is turned on to record a video program.
- 8. The method of claim 1, in which the backing up step backs up the index data in the memory for a predetermined number of times and then stops backing up.
- 9. The method of claim 1, in which the backing up step stops backing up the index data in the memory each time the recording medium is turned off.
- 10. The method of claim 1 additionally comprising the step of using the index data in the memory to position a recording medium at the start of a selected video program.
- 11. The method of claim 10, additionally comprising the step of playing the selected video program.
- 12. The method of claim 2, in which the storing step stores the index data identifying the cassette tape and the tape location of each video program while it is being recorded.
- 13. The method of claim 1, in which the index data also includes the name of each video program.
- 14. The method of claim 1 additionally comprising the step of displaying a portion of the index data stored in memory.
- 15. The method of claim 2 additionally comprising the steps of inputting data identifying a particular cassette tape and displaying the portion of the index data stored in the memory that identifies the locations of the video programs recorded on the particular cassette tape.
- 16. The method of claim 15 additionally comprising the steps of inputting data to select one of the displayed video programs and transporting the cassette tape to the location of the selected video program.
- 17. The method of claim 16, additionally comprising the step of playing the selected video program after the transporting step.
- 18. A video recording and management system comprising:
a video recording medium for recording video programs thereon; and a memory for storing index data identifying the location of all the video programs on the recording medium, wherein the stored index data is backed up onto the recording medium as each video program is being recorded thereon.
- 19. The system of claim 18, in which the video programs are recorded on a plurality of tapes.
- 20. The system of claim 19 additionally comprising the step of storing the identification of the last tape on which the index data in the memory was backed up.
- 21. The method of claim 19 additionally comprising after a failure of the memory the step of retrieving the last tape on which the index data in the memory was backed up based on the stored identification and downloading the index data from the last tape to the memory.
- 22. The system of claim 18 additionally comprising means for using the index data in the memory to position a recording medium at the start of a selected video program.
- 23. The system of claim 22, additionally comprising means for playing the selected video program.
