Claims
- 1. A conveyor for transporting articles comprising:
a transport carrier for carrying at least one article; a drive rail for supporting said transport carrier, said drive rail including a drive system for propelling said transport carrier along the conveyor; a support rail parallel to and spaced from said drive rail for supporting said transport carrier; and at least one shoe carried by said transport carrier, said shoe being configured to ride on said support rail for movably supporting said transport carrier on said support rail.
- 2. The conveyor of claim 1 wherein the transport carrier is guided along the conveyor by one of the drive or support rails.
- 3. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said shoe is a wheel rotatably mounted to said transport carrier.
- 4. The conveyor of claim 1 wherein the shoe is a flat plate.
- 5. The conveyor of claim 1 wherein the shoe includes a flat plate having a groove formed therein.
- 6. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said transport carrier has a base having a groove formed therein, said shoe being positioned in said groove.
- 7. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said transport carrier has a wall and said shoe is mounted to said wall.
- 8. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said drive system includes a plurality of drive wheels and at least one motor for driving said drive wheels.
- 9. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said support rail includes a plurality of rollers for engaging the shoe.
- 10. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said support rail included a V-shaped groove formed therein for receiving the shoe to guide the transport carrier as the transport carrier moves along the support rail.
- 11. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said drive rail includes a plurality of zones each having a plurality of drive wheels and at least one motor for driving said drive wheels, and further comprising a control system coupled to said motors for selectively actuating said motor to propel said transport carrier along said zone and inactivating said motor after said transport carrier has exited said zone.
- 12. The conveyor or claim 11 wherein said plurality of zones each include at least one sensor for detecting the presence of the transport carrier within each of said zones.
- 13. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said transport carrier has a base having a groove formed therein, said drive system engaging said groove in said transport carrier to guide said transport carrier as said transport carrier moves along said drive rail.
- 14. The conveyor of claim 1 in which said transport carrier includes a protective container having an interior cavity configured to retain one or more articles.
- 15. The conveyor of claim 1, and further comprising a protective container carried by said transport carrier, said protective container having an interior cavity configured to retain one or more articles.
- 16. A transport carrier for carrying one or more articles along a conveyor system, the conveyor system including a drive rail and a support rail spaced from and parallel to the drive rail for supporting said container, the drive rail including a drive system for propelling said container along the drive and support rails, said transport carrier including:
a housing enclosing an interior compartment configured to retain one or more articles, said housing having a surface positionable on the drive and support rails of the conveyor system, said surface being configured to interface the drive system such that actuation of the drive system propels the housing along the drive and support rails; and at least one shoe carried by said housing, said shoe being configured to ride on the support rail of the conveyor system to movably support said housing on the support rail.
- 17. The transport carrier of claim 16 in which said shoe is a wheel rotatably mounted to said housing.
- 18. The transport carrier of claim 17 in which said surface has a groove formed therein, said wheel being positioned in said groove.
- 19. The transport carrier of claim 16 in which said surface is a bottom surface and the housing has a top surface and walls between said top surface and said bottom surface, said shoe being mounted to one of said walls of said container.
- 20. The transport carrier of claim 16 in which said bottom surface of said housing includes a groove shaped to engage the drive system of the drive rail.
- 21. The transport carrier of claim 20 in which said bottom surface of said housing includes a plurality of slots configured to interface with kinematic pins carried by an external system.
- 22. In combination, the transport carrier of claim 16 and one or more semiconductor wafers positioned in said interior compartment.
- 23. The combination of claim 22 in which said one or more semiconductor wafers have a diameter of 200 mm or greater.
- 24. The combination of claim 22 in which said one or more semiconductor wafers have a diameter of 300 mm or greater.
- 25. In combination, the transport carrier of claim 16 and a conveyor system including a drive rail and a support rail spaced from and parallel to said drive rail for supporting said container, said drive rail including a drive system for propelling said container along said drive and support rails.
- 26. In combination, the transport carrier of claim 25 wherein the transport carrier includes a guiding feature which interfaces with one of said drive or support rails for guiding the transport carrier along the conveyor system.
- 27. A method of transporting articles between stations comprising the steps of:
providing a transport carrier for holding at least one article and having a base and at least one shoe carried by the base; positioning the transport carrier with the base of the transport carrier supported on a drive rail and the shoe carried by the transport carrier supported on a support rail of a conveyor system; and actuating a drive system carried by the drive rail to propel the transport carrier along the drive rail and support rail.
- 28. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of:
guiding the transport carrier by one of the drive or support rails.
- 29. The method of claim 27 in which said step of providing a transport carrier includes providing a transport carrier having the at least one shoe mounted to the transport carrier.
- 30. The method of claim 27 in which said step of positioning the transport carrier includes positioning a plurality of transport carriers on the drive rail and support rail of the conveyor system.
- 31. The method of claim 27 in which the drive system includes a plurality of drive wheels and at least one motor for driving the drive wheels, and said step of actuating a drive system includes actuating the motor to drive the drive wheels.
- 32. The method of claim 27 in which the drive rail includes a plurality of drive systems each defining an operational zone of the drive rail, and said step of actuating a drive system includes actuating the drive system of each operational zone when the transport carrier is in the vicinity of the operational zone.
- 33. The method of claim 32 in which said step of actuating a drive system includes actuating the drive system of the operational zone to propel the transport carrier through the operational zone and inactivating the drive system after the transport carrier has left the operational zone.
- 34. The method of claim 32 further comprising the step of:
sensing a motive characteristic of the transport carrier, said motive characteristic being any one of: location, velocity, acceleration, deceleration and spacing of the transport carrier.
- 35. A transport system for transporting articles, comprising:
a conveyor having a drive rail and a support rail parallel to and spaced from said drive rail; and a transport carrier configured to ride on said conveyor and wherein said transport carrier includes a guiding feature which interfaces with one of said drive or support rails for guiding the transport carrier along the conveyor.
- 36. The transport system of claim 35 wherein the guiding feature includes a groove formed in a surface of said transport carrier.
- 37. The transport system of claim 35 wherein the guiding feature includes a shoe carried by said transport carrier.
