Claims
- 1. An apparatus for making an integrated circuit, comprising:a light source to illuminate at least one portion of a side of a semiconductor device; a current meter connectable to a P-N junction in the semiconductor device to monitor an induced photo current through the P-N junction in response to illumination by the light source; and a material removal device to remove material from the semiconductor device and to discontinue removal of material from the semiconductor device in response to a predetermined change in the induced photo current.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the light source comprises a laser.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a mechanism to scan the light source across the semiconductor device in a predefined pattern to facilitate removal of material according to the predefined pattern.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the material removal device comprises at least one of mechanical etching, chemical etching, reactive ion etching (RIE), plasma etching, wet etching, laser chemical etching, laser ablation or focused ion beam (FIB) ion mill etching equipment.
- 5. An apparatus for making a semiconductor device, comprising:one of an electron beam source or an ion beam source to direct an electron beam or an ion beam on at least one portion of a side of a semiconductor device; a current meter connectable to a P-N junction in the semiconductor device to monitor an electron beam or ion beam induced current through the P-N junction in response to the electron beam or the ion beam being incident upon the at least one portion of the side of the semiconductor device; and a material removal device to remove material from the semiconductor device and to discontinue removal of material from the semiconductor device in response to a predetermined change in the electron beam or ion beam induced current.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising at least one electrostatic or magnetic field deflection system to scan the electron beam or the ion beam across the at least one portion of the side of the semiconductor device.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the material removal device comprises at least one of mechanical etching, chemical etching, reactive ion etching (RIE), plasma etching, wet etching, laser chemical etching, laser ablation or focused ion beam (FIB) ion mill etching equipment.
- 8. A method of mapping semiconductor regions within a substrate, comprising:scanning a light source, particle beam or x-ray along a surface of the semiconductor substrate; monitoring an induced current through at least one semiconductor junction as the light source, particle beam or x-ray is scanned across the surface of the semiconductor; and plotting the induced current as a function of distance across the surface of the semiconductor substrate to map the semiconductor region defined by the at least one semiconductor junction.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the light source is a beam of incoherent light.
- 10. The method of claim 8 wherein the light source is a laser.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined change in the induced photo current comprises a transition in the induced photo current from substantially increasing in amplitude to substantially decreasing in amplitude or remaining substantially the same in response to at least a segment of a portion of a depletion region of the P-N junction being removed.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the light source comprises a broad beam laser source, a broad electron beam source, a charged particle beam source, an ion beam source, an x-ray source or a scanning source of a small spot beam laser, a charged particle beam, an electron beam, an ion beam, or an x-ray.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a controller electrically connected to the light source, the current meter, and the material removal device to control the removal of material from the semiconductor device.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein:the controller comprises a microprocessor, a central processing unit, or a programmable controller; the controller is electrically connected to control the material removal device to remove material from the at least one portion of the side of the semiconductor device and to discontinue removal of material from the semiconductor device in response to the predetermined change in the induced photo current; the current meter comprises an ammeter electrically connected to a P well tap and an N well tap in the semiconductor device; and further comprising: an etching chamber in which the semiconductor device is located, the etching chamber having a cover attached to the material removal device; a fixture attached to the cover of the etching chamber through a viewing port, the light source being attached to the fixture; a plurality of mirrors mounted to the fixture and the cover of the etching chamber to focus the light source on the semiconductor device; and a motorized gimbal mechanism mounted to the fixture and one of the mirrors to scan the light source across the semiconductor device in a predefined pattern to facilitate removal of material according to the predefined pattern, the motorized gimbal mechanism being electrically connected to the controller to control the scan of the light source.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the predetermined change in the electron beam or ion beam induced current comprises a transition in the electron beam or ion beam induced current from substantially increasing in amplitude to substantially decreasing in amplitude or remaining substantially the same in response to at least a segment of a portion of a depletion region of the P-N junction being removed.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the predetermined change in the electron beam or ion beam induced current will occur as a function of physical properties of at least one of the semiconductor device, a P well region or an N well region formed in the semiconductor device, an acceleration voltage of the electron beam, or an acceleration voltage and an ion mass of the ion beam.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 5, comprising a controller electrically connected to the electron beam source or the ion beam source, the current meter, and the material removal device to control the removal of material from the semiconductor device.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein:the controller comprises a microprocessor, a central processing unit, or a programmable controller; the controller is electrically connected to control the material removal device to remove material from the at least one portion of the side of the semiconductor device and to discontinue removal of material from the semiconductor device in response to the predetermined change in the electron beam or ion beam induced current; the current meter comprises an ammeter electrically connected to a P well tap and an N well tap in the semiconductor device; and further comprising: at least one electrostatic or magnetic field deflection system coupled to the controller to scan the electron beam or the ion beam across the at least one portion of the side of the semiconductor device; an etching chamber in which the semiconductor device is located, the etching chamber having a cover attached to the material removal device; a fixture attached to the cover of the etching chamber through a viewing port, the electron beam source or the ion beam source being attached to the fixture; and a plurality of mirrors mounted to the fixture and the cover of the etching chamber to direct the electron beam or the ion beam on the at least one portion of the side of the semiconductor device.
- 19. An apparatus for making an integrated circuit, comprising:a light source to illuminate at least one portion of a side of a semiconductor device; a current meter connectable to a P-N junction in the semiconductor device to monitor an induced photo current through the P-N junction in response to illumination by the light source; a material removal device to remove material from the semiconductor device and to discontinue removal of material from the semiconductor device in response to a predetermined change in the induced photo current; and a controller electrically connected to the light source, the current meter, and the material removal device to control the removal of material from the semiconductor device.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the light source comprises a laser.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising a mechanism to scan the light source across the semiconductor device in a predefined pattern to facilitate removal of material according to the predefined pattern.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the material removal device comprises at least one of mechanical etching, chemical etching, reactive ion etching (RIE), plasma etching, wet etching, laser chemical etching, laser ablation or focused ion beam (FIB) ion mill etching equipment.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the predetermined change in the induced photo current comprises a transition in the induced photo current from substantially increasing in amplitude to substantially decreasing in amplitude or remaining substantially the same in response to at least a segment of a portion of a depletion region of the P-N junction being removed.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the light source comprises a broad beam laser source, a broad electron beam source, a charged particle beam source, an ion beam source, an x-ray source or a scanning source of a small spot beam laser, a charged particle beam, an electron beam, an ion beam, or an x-ray.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein:the controller comprises a microprocessor, a central processing unit, or a programmable controller; the current meter comprises an ammeter electrically connected to a P well tap and an N well tap in the semiconductor device; and further comprising: an etching chamber in which the semiconductor device is located, the etching chamber having a cover attached to the material removal device; a fixture attached to the cover of the etching chamber through a viewing port, the light source being attached to the fixture; a plurality of mirrors mounted to the fixture and the cover of the etching chamber to focus the light source on the semiconductor device; and a motorized gimbal mechanism mounted to the fixture and one of the mirrors to scan the light source across the semiconductor device in a predefined pattern to facilitate removal of material according to the predefined pattern, the motorized gimbal mechanism being electrically connected to the controller to control the scan of the light source.
- 26. An apparatus for making a semiconductor device, comprising:a chamber in which a semiconductor device is located; a material removal device attached to the chamber to remove material from the semiconductor device; and means for controlling the removal of material from the semiconductor device.
