Claims
- 1. A method for measuring range to each of multiple locations on a surface comprising the steps of:
- projecting a plurality of zones of light onto said surface at each of said multiple locations,
- simultaneously imaging said zones onto a photodetector array, the axis of said imaging spaced angularly from each said projection,
- analyzing the output of said array, and,
- from said analysis, determining the range to each of said locations on said surface.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein said light zones are produced by at least one laser.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 wherein said at least one laser is a diode laser.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein said photodetector array is a linear array.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein said projecting of said zones occurs in the same plane as the linear dimension of said linear array.
- 6. A method according to claim 1 wherein said array is positioned so as to not be orthogonal to said imaging axis.
- 7. A method according to claim 1 further including the step of measuring said zone image locations on said array.
- 8. A method according to claim 1 wherein said zones are spots.
- 9. A method according to claim 1 wherein said zones are elongate.
- 10. A method using optical ranging devices for measuring each of multiple locations of a surface, comprising the steps of:
- projecting light onto an object surface at each of multiple locations on a surface of an object;
- generating readings in response to light reflected from each of said surface locations; and
- averaging said readings to obtain a range related to each said surface location.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 wherein said readings are averaged only if said readings are within a predetermined range band.
- 12. A method for measuring object dimension comprising the steps of:
- providing a plurality of sensors projecting laser light onto the surface of said object at multiple locations;
- generating readings proportional to light returned from each of said surface locations;
- determining from said readings the positions of said surface locations on which said light is incident; and,
- from said determination, computing a dimension of said object.
- 13. A method according to claim 12 wherein individual sensors are used for each location.
- 14. A method according to claim 12 wherein said dimension is object shape.
- 15. A method according to claim 12 wherein said dimension is object thickness.
- 16. A method according to claim 12 wherein said positions are averaged before computing said dimension of said object.
- 17. A method according to claim 12 wherein a microcomputer is used to perform said computation.
- 18. A method according to claim 12 wherein said determination is via triangulation.
- 19. A method as in claim 18, wherein a microcomputer is used to provide said determination.
- 20. A method according to claim 12 wherein said determination is triggered by the presence of said object in the laser light projected from said sensors.
- 21. A method according to claim 12 wherein said object is in motion with respect to said sensors.
- 22. A method as in claim 12, wherein said laser light is provided by a diode laser.
- 23. A method as in claim 12, wherein at least one of said plurality of sensors is moveable with respect to another of said plurality of sensors.
