Claims
- 1. Apparatus for determining dimensional characteristics of a part, comprising:
- means for rotating said part, said means for rotating
- providing data concerning said rotation,
- machine means for moving a sensor means relative to said part wherein said sensor means comprises a non-contact sensor means for determining the distance from said machine means to a plurality of points on the surface of said part, said machine means providing data concerning said movement of said sensor means and said sensor means providing data concerning said distance, and
- computer means to analyze said data from said means for rotating, machine means and sensor means to determine the contour or other dimensional characteristic of said part.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said machine means moves said sensor means in at least two cartesian axes.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a second computer means for controlling said means for rotating said part and said machine means for moving said sensor means relative to said part.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said second computer means is programmed using data corresponding to a theoretical part shape.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said non-contact sensor means is of the optical triangulation type.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said non-contact sensor means comprises a photo detector array.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 6, further comprising means for controlling a light gathering related variable of said photo detector array.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said means for controlling a light gathering related variable controls the scan rate of said photo detector array.
- 9. A method for determining dimensional characteristics of a part, comprising:
- positioning said part on a rotation means,
- rotating said part with said rotation means, said rotation means providing data concerning said rotation,
- moving a non-contact sensor means relative to said part, with a machine means, said machine means providing data concerning said movement of said sensor means,
- determining the distance from said machine means to a plurality of points on the surface of said part, with said non-contact sensor means, said sensor means providing data concerning said distance, and
- analyzing said data from said rotation means, machine means and non-contact sensor means to determine the contour or other dimensional characteristic of said part, with a computer means.
- 10. A method according to claim 9 wherein said sensor is moved relative to said part in at least two cartesian axes, with said machine means.
- 11. A method according to claim 9, further comprising controlling said rotating of said part and said movement of said sensor means relative to said part with a second computer means.
- 12. A method according to claim 11, wherein said second computer means is programmed using data corresponding to a theoretical part shape.
- 13. A method according to claim 9, wherein said non-contact sensor means is of the optical triangulation type.
- 14. A method according to claim 13, wherein said non-contact sensor means comprises a photo detector array.
- 15. A method according to claim 14, further comprising controlling a light gathering related variable of said photo detector array.
- 16. A method according to claim 15, wherein said light gathering related variable comprises the scan rate of said photo detector array.
