Claims
- 1. A photodetector array based imaging system comprising:
- a scanning photodetector array means having an output,
- means to image light reflected from an object illuminated with light onto said photodetector array means,
- light gathering control means, including a microcomputer, for varying the amount of light reflected onto said photodetector array means and for varying a photodetector array variable in response to said output from said photodetector array means.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said photodetector array variable is selected from a group comprising integration time, scan rate, and scan clock rate.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said amount of light reflected onto said photodetector array means is varied by modifying either the time the light is reflected onto the photodetector array or the power of the light reflected onto the photodetector array.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said photodetector array means is scanned at a maximum rate.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said light gathering control means operates to maximize the array signal level for processing.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for storing the output of said array prior to varying the light reflected onto said photodetector array means.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said means for storing said output of said photodetector array means comprises a means for temporarily storing said output.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for filtering the output of said photodetector array means.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising means for determining whether said output of said photodetector array means is above a predetermined threshold.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said light gathering control means varies said photodetector array variable before the next scan of said array.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said photodetector array means comprises a matrix array.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising utilizing said image for measuring the position, attitude, or dimension of said object.
- 13. A method for imaging an object illuminated with light, said method comprising:
- imaging light reflected from said object onto a scanning photodetector array means having an output,
- using a light gathering control means comprising a microcomputer, varying the amount of light reflected onto said photodetector array means and varying a photodetector array variable in response to said output from said photodetector array means.
- 14. A method according to claim 13 wherein said photodetector array variable is selected from a group comprising integration time, scan rate, and scan clock rate.
- 15. A method according to claim 13 wherein the amount of light reflected onto said photodetector array means is varied by modifying either the time the light is reflected onto the photodetector array or the power of the light reflected onto the photodetector array.
- 16. A method according to claim 13 further comprising the step of storing the output of said photodetector array means prior to varying the amount of light reflected onto said photodetector array means.
- 17. A method according to claim 13 further comprising the added step of filtering the output of said photodetector array means.
