Claims
- 1. A receiving station for receiving a container having a first interior region, said container including a container door which makes a seal with said container to establish a sealed environment in said first interior region, the receiving station comprising:
- a port assembly having an aperture, said port assembly adapted to form a first seal with said container when said container is moved to a sealing position with respect to said receiving station;
- a port door adapter to form a second seal with said port assembly when said port door is in a sealing position with respect to said port assembly;
- an inlet for injecting gas into said receiving station, said inlet introducing gas into said container when said container door is removed from said container and when said container is in said sealing position with respect to said port assembly; and
- an outlet for removing gas from said receiving station.
- 2. A receiving station according to claim 1, wherein:
- said inlet and said outlet are not connected directly to said container; and
- said inlet introduces gas directly into said container.
- 3. A receiving station according to claim 1, wherein said outlet removes gas from said container when said container door is removed from said container and when said container is in said sealing position with respect to said receiving station.
- 4. A receiving station according to claim 1, wherein said port door and said port assembly form a non-contact seal when said port door is opened to an intermediate position so that differential pressures cause gas to flow from inside said receiving station through said non-contact seal into said outlet.
- 5. A receiving station according to claim 1, wherein:
- said receiving station further includes means for opening said port door and container door so that gas can flow between an interior region of said receiving station and said first interior region; and
- said port door and said port assembly form a non-contact seal when said port door is opened to an intermediate position.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising means for reducing the pressure in said outlet.
- 7. A receiving station for receiving a container having a first interior region, said container including a container door which makes a seal with said container to establish a sealed environment in said first interior region, the receiving station comprising:
- a port assembly having an aperture, said port assembly adapted to form a first seal with said container when said container is moved to a sealing position with respect to said receiving station;
- a port door adapted to form a second seal with said port assembly when said port door is in a sealing position with respect to said port assembly;
- means for removing fluid from said first interior region only when said container door is opened and said container is in said sealing position with respect to said receiving station;
- means for injecting fluid into said first interior region only when said container door is opened and said container is in said sealing position with respect to said receiving station, said means for injecting not being connected directly to said container.
- 8. A method for using a receiving station with a container, the container including a box with an opening and a box door for closing the opening, the container having a first interior region, the receiving station having a port, said port including a port door, the method comprising the steps of:
- sealably mating said container with said port, said first interior region having a first pressure;
- opening said port door and said box door;
- removing, through said opening, a first fluid from said first interior region while said port and box doors are opened and said container is mated with said port causing said first interior region to have a second pressure;
- injecting, through said opening, a second fluid into said first interior region while said port and box doors are opened and said container is mated with said port causing said first interior region to have a third pressure.
- 9. A method according to claim 8, wherein: said first fluid is different from said second fluid.
- 10. A method according to claim 8, wherein: said second fluid is nitrogen gas.
- 11. A method according to claim 8, wherein: said first pressure is not equal to said second pressure; and said second pressure is not equal to said third pressure.
- 12. A method for using a receiving station with a container, the container including a box and a box door, the container having a first interior region, the receiving station having a second interior region and a port, said port including a port door, the method comprising the steps of:
- sealably mating said container with said port, said first interior region having a first pressure;
- opening said port door and said box door;
- removing a first fluid frown said first interior region while said port and box doors are opened causing said first interior region to have a second pressure;
- injecting a second fluid into said first interior region while said port and box doors are opened causing said first interior region to have a third pressure;
- creating differential pressures in said first interior region and said second interior region; and,
- creating a non-contact seal between said first interior region and said second interior region so that fluid flows from said second interior region through said non-contact seal into an outlet and contaminants are purged from said first interior region to said outlet but prevented from entering said second interior region.
- 13. A receiving station for receiving a container having a container interior region, said container including a container door which makes a seal with said container to establish a sealed environment in said container interior region, said receiving station having a station interior region, said receiving station comprising:
- a port assembly adapted to form a seal with said container when said container is moved to a sealing position with respect to said receiving station;
- a port door adapted to form a seal with said port assembly when said port door is moved to a sealing position with respect to said port assembly;
- an inlet for injecting fluid;
- an outlet for removing fluid;
- a port door cover having a sealing edge forming a first seal with said port assembly to create an isolation region, between said port assembly and said port door cover and isolated from said station interior region, when said port door cover is in a closed position;
- means for moving said port door and container door into said isolation region so that fluid can flow between said isolation region and said container interior region and contaminants are prevented from entering said station interior region from said container interior region.
- 14. An apparatus according to claim 13, further including means for reducing the pressure in said outlet.
- 15. An apparatus according to claim 13, further including a spring to provide a sealing force to seal said port door cover sealing edge against said port assembly to create said isolation region.
- 16. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein opening said port door to an intermediate position breaks said first seal between said port plate and said port door cover to allow fluid to be transferred to said station interior region.
- 17. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said outlet removes fluid from said container when said container is in said sealing position and said container door is opened.
- 18. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said inlet introduces fluid into said container when said container is in said sealing position and said container door is opened.
