- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the lubricant is a body fluid.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for non-uniformly irradiating the surface comprises a mask for the surface placed on or in proximity to the surface prior to exposure to the accelerated gas cluster ion beam, such mask having apertures, thickness variations, or a combination thereof to form a pattern affecting surface modification by the gas cluster ion beam irradiation.
- 5. A method for modifying a surface of an artificial joint component by gas cluster ion beam processing comprising the steps of:
forming an gas cluster ion beam in a vacuum chamber; accelerating the gas cluster ion beam; positioning the surface in the vacuum chamber in the path of the gas cluster ion beam for processing; and non-uniformly irradiating the surface with the gas cluster ion beam to form a pattern in the surface.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the pattern comprises height variations for retaining a lubricant.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the lubricant is a body fluid.
- 8. The method of claim 5 wherein a mask is placed on or in proximity to the surface during the irradiation step to control irradiation patterning, the mask having apertures, thickness variations, or a combination thereof forming a pattern thereon affecting surface modification by the gas cluster ion beam irradiation.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the mask is a metal foil or film.
- 10. The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of:
focusing or collimating the gas cluster ion beam to a predetermined small diameter; and wherein the non-uniform irradiation step is performed by controllably positioning the surface relative to the small diameter gas cluster ion beam.
- 11. A method of implanting an artificial joint having at least two relatively moving surfaces comprising the steps of:
forming a predetermined pattern in at least one of the relatively moving surfaces, said pattern having height variations for retaining lubricant; assembling the artificial joint; and implanting the artificial joint.
- 12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of introducing lubricant into the predetermined pattern to lubricate the patterned surface.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the lubricant is a body fluid.
- 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the forming step further comprises the steps of:
forming an inert gas cluster ion beam in a vacuum chamber; accelerating the gas cluster ion beam; positioning the surface in the vacuum chamber in the path of the gas cluster ion beam for processing; and non-uniformly irradiating the surface with the accelerated gas cluster ion beam to etch the predetermined pattern in the surface.
- 15. The method of claim 11 wherein the height variations of the pattern form channels or cavities having depths less than about ten micrometers.
- 16. An artificial joint having a pattern of channels and cavities formed on at least one surface thereof for the containment of lubricant wherein the majority of the channels and cavities have a depth less than about ten micrometers.
- 17. The artificial joint of claim 16 wherein the predetermined pattern is formed by non-uniformly irradiating the surface with a gas cluster ion beam.
- 18. The artificial joint of claim 16 wherein the lubricant is a body fluid.
- 19. The artificial joint of claim 16 wherein the artificial joint is a hip joint.
- 20. An artificial joint having at least two intermovable surfaces wherein at least one intermovable surface has a pattern of height variations formed by non-uniformly irradiating the surface with a gas cluster ion beam and wherein the intermovable surfaces are assembled together and lubricant is introduced into the pattern to lubricate the patterned surface.
