Claims
- 1. A method for imparting flame retardancy to a resin which comprises the steps of:
- (a) reacting a modified resin selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) a modified resin prepared by a process comprising the step of reacting, at a temperature range of from 200 to 450.degree. C., a resin with a compound represented by the formula (2) ##STR7## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, and R.sub.9 each is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group, and they may be the same or different; and R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 each is a hydrogen atom or a group having one or more carbon atoms, and they may be the same or different;
- (ii) a modified resin prepared by a process comprising the step of reacting, at a temperature range of from 200 to 450.degree. C., a resin with a condensate having an average addition condensation degree of more than 1 which is obtained by subjecting (a) a compound represented by the formula (2) above, with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 is a hydrogen atom, (b) a co-condensable compound as an optional reactant and (c) an aldehyde to an addition condensation reaction; and
- (iii) a modified resin prepared by a process comprising the step of reacting, at a temperature range of from 200 to 450.degree. C., a resin with an etherified condensate having an average addition condensation degree of more than 1 which is obtained by subjecting (A) a compound represented by the formula (2) above, with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 is a hydrogen atom, (B) a co-condensable compound as an optional reactant and (C) an aldehyde to an addition reaction or an addition condensation reaction, and then subjecting the reaction product and at least one alcohol selected from alcohols having 1-20 carbon atoms to etherification and optionally to simultaneous condensation,
- with at least one selected from the group consisting of epoxies to obtain an epoxy-modified resin; and
- (b) introducing said epoxy-modified resin to said resin.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, which further comprises additional incorporation of at least one component selected from the group consisting of phosphorus and phosphorus atom-containing compounds.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the phosphorus and phosphorus atom-containing compounds are selected from the group consisting of red phosphorus, phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acids, phosphorous acid, phosphonic acid, phosphate salts, polyphosphate salts, phosphite salts, phosphonate salts, phosphate esters, phosphite esters, phosphonate esters, phosphines and sulfur-cotaining phosphorus compounds.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the polyphosphate salt is an ammonium polyphosphate represented by the formula (NH.sub.4).sub.m+2 P.sub.m O.sub.3m+1, wherein m is an integer more than 5.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, which further comprises additional incorporation of at least one component selected from isocyanuric acids represented by the formula (3) ##STR8## wherein R.sub.14, R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 are the same or different and are individually a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, an oxyalkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a phenyl group or a glycidyl group, and cyanuric acids represented by the formula (4) ##STR9## wherein R.sub.14, R.sub.15 and R.sub.16 have the same meanings as defined in the formula (3) above.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, which further comprises additional incorporation of an amino group-containing compound.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the amino group-containing compound is at least one selected from the group consisting of compounds which contain at least one selected from the groups represented by ##STR10## dicyandiamide, guanidine, and reaction products between these compounds and aldehydes.
- 8. The method according to claim 1, which further comprises additional incorporation of at least one phosphorus compound and at least one amino group-containing compound as components.
- 9. A method for thermally stabilizing a resin which comprises the steps of:
- (a) reacting a modified resin selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) a modified resin prepared by a process comprising the step of reacting, at a temperature range of from 200 to 450.degree. C., a resin with a compound represented by the formula (2) ##STR11## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, and R.sub.9 each is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group, and they may be the same or different; and R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 each is a hydrogen atom or a group having one or more carbon atoms, and they may be the same or different;
- (ii) a modified resin prepared by a process comprising the step of reacting, at a temperature range of from 200 to 450.degree. C., a resin with a condensate having an average addition condensation degree of more than 1 which is obtained by subjecting (a) a compound represented by the formula (2) above, with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 is a hydrogen atom, (b) a co-condensable compound as an optional reactant and (c) an aldehyde to an addition condensation reaction; and
- (iii) a modified resin prepared by a process comprising the step of reacting, at a temperature range of from 200 to 450.degree. C., a resin with an etherified condensate having an average addition condensation degree of more than 1 which is obtained by subjecting (A) a compound represented by the formula (2) above, with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 is a hydrogen atom, (B) a co-condensable compound as an optional reactant and (C) an aldehyde to an addition reaction or an addition condensation reaction, and then subjecting the reaction product and at least one alcohol selected from alcohols having 1-20 carbon atoms to etherification and optionally to simultaneous condensation,
- with at least one selected from the group consisting of epoxies to obtain an epoxy-modified resin; and
- (b) introducing said epoxy-modified resin to said resin.
- 10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the resin is at least one selected from the group consisting of polyolefin resins, polyphenyleneether resins, polyamide resins, polyacrylic resins, polystyrene resins and olefin thermoplastic elastomers.
