Claims
- 1. A method of producing a biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein in a plant, comprising:
a) preparing plant cells transformed with nucleotide sequence encoding each chain of the biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein, wherein said nucleotide sequence for each chain also encodes a leader sequence, wherein each leader sequence forms a secretion signal that is cleaved from each of said chains following proteolytic processing, thus allowing said chains to assemble and form biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein in the plant cells; and b) processing the plant cells to obtain a preparation of the biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said heteromultimeric protein is an immunoglobulin comprising a heavy chain and a light chain and said biological function is antigen binding.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said immunoglobulin is a fragment of an immunoglobulin.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said immunoglobulin is a Fab fragment.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein said immunoglobulin is a Fab′ fragment.
- 6. The method of claim 3 wherein said immunoglobulin is a Fab′2 fragment.
- 7. The method of claim 3 wherein said immunoglobulin is a Fv fragment.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said plant cells are in the form of a plant.
- 9. A hetermultimeric mammalian protein preparation obtained by the method of claim 1 wherein said preparation includes plant material not removed by processing.
- 10. A hetermultimeric mammalian protein preparation obtained by the method of claim 2 wherein said preparation includes plant material not removed by processing.
