Claims
- 1. A method of producing a biologically functional single chain protein in a plant cell, comprising:
a) preparing plant cells transformed with nucleotide sequence encoding a single polypeptide which comprises amino acids encoding a first and a second chain of a biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein, said nucleotide sequence also encoding a leader sequence that forms a secretion signal that is cleaved following proteolytic processing, thus allowing said encoded first and second chains of said single polypeptide to assemble and form a biologically functional single chain protein; and b) processing the plant cells to obtain a preparation of the biologically functional single chain protein.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said biologically functional heteromultimeric mammalian protein is an immunoglobulin comprising a heavy chain and a light chain and said biological function is antigen binding.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said biologically functional single chain protein is a immunoglobulin single chain Fv fragment.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said nucleotide sequence also encodes for one or more amino acids providing spacing between the sequence encoding said first and second chain.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said plant cells are in the form of a plant.
- 6. A biologically functional single chain protein preparation obtained by the method of claim 1 wherein said preparation includes plant material not removed by processing.
- 7. A biologically functional single chain protein preparation obtained by the method of claim 2 wherein said preparation includes plant material not removed by processing.
