Claims
- 1. A cathodic arc plasma source comprising an anode, a cathode, and a plasma arc generator connected between the anode and cathode, wherein the anode is formed of a plurality of spaced baffles.
- 2. The source of claim 1 wherein the cathode comprises a rod with a diameter on the order of about ¼ inch (6.25 mm).
- 3. The source of claim 2 further comprising a cathode advancement or feed mechanism coupled to the cathode rod.
- 4. The source of claim 3 further comprising a cooled metal shield or tube in which the movable cathode rod is mounted.
- 5. The source of claim 1 wherein the anode baffles extend beyond the active surface of the cathode.
- 6. The source of claim 1 wherein the source is operated in pulsed mode.
- 7. The source of claim 6 wherein the source is operated at a current on the order of 1 kA.
- 8. The source of claim 1 wherein the cathode is made of graphite.
