Claims
- 1. A system for measuring the size of particles suspended in a sample cell, comprising
- illumination means for illuminating the sample cell along a first interrogating axis with one or more interrogating light beams, each characterized by a selected wavelength and including at least a first interrogating component having a linear polarization (P.sub.1) at a first angle measured with respect to a scattering plane and a second interrogating component having a linear polarization (P.sub.2) at a second angle measured with respect to said scattering plane, where said first and second angles are other than symmetrically disposed about a plane perpendicular or parallel to said scattering plane and intersecting said interrogating axis,
- photodetector means for detecting light scattered by said suspended particles for at least one selected wavelength and in said scattering plane at least two selected scattering angles,
- said photodetector means including means for generating a first intensity signal representative of the intensity of scattered light from said first interrogating component,
- said photodetector means including means for generating a second intensity signal representative of the intensity of scattered light from said second interrogating component, and
- intensity differential processing means, coupled to said photodetector means, for generating a signal representative of the particle size distribution in said sample cell for at least one selected wavelength, said intensity differential processing means including means for generating a difference signal representative of the difference of said first and second intensity signals.
- 2. A system according to claim 1 further including means for generating a symmetry signal representative of symmetry of said difference signal values about 90 degrees of said interrogating axis.
- 3. A system according to claim 1, wherein said photodetector means includes a plurality of photodetecting elements disposed at selected angles about said sample cell.
- 4. A system according to claim 3, wherein said photodetector means includes an array of photodetecting elements disposed at a position centered about an axis which is substantially perpendicular to said interrogating axis and passes through said sample cell.
- 5. A system according to claim 1, wherein said intensity differential processing means includes control means for generating a plurality of said distribution-representative signals, each corresponding to a selected wavelength of said interrogating light beam.
- 6. A system according to claim 1 wherein the angle between said first angle and second angle is ninety degrees.
- 7. A system for measuring the size of particles suspended in a sample cell, comprising:
- illumination means for illuminating the sample cell along an interrogating axis with a linearly polarized interrogating light beam, said beam being characterized by a selected wavelength and by a polarization vector (P),
- photodetector means for detecting light scattered by said suspended particles for said selected wavelength and in a first scattering plane at least two selected scattering angles, and for said selected wavelength and in a second scattering plane at least two selected scattering angles, wherein said first scattering plane is angularly offset with respect to said second scattering plane, and said first and second scattering planes are other than symmetrically disposed about said polarization vector P,
- said photodetector means including first detector means for generating a first intensity signal representative of the intensity of scattered light from said beam detected in said first scattering plane,
- said photodetector means including second detector means for generating a second intensity signal representative of the intensity of scattered light from said beam detected in said second scattering plane, and
- intensity differential processing means, coupled to said photodetector means, for generating a signal representative of the particle size distribution in said sample cell for said selected wavelength, said intensity differential processing means including means for generating a difference signal representative of the difference of said first and second intensity signals.
- 8. A system according to claim 7 further including calculation means for generating a symmetry signal representative of symmetry of said difference signal values about 90 degrees of said interrogating axis.
- 9. A system according to claim 7 wherein said first detector means includes a plurality of photodetecting elements disposed in said first scattering plane, and at selected angles about said sample cell,
- said second detector means includes a plurality of photodetecting elements disposed in said second scattering plane at selected angles about said sample cell.
- 10. A system according to claim 9 wherein each of said pluralities of said photodetecting elements includes an arctuate array of photodetecting elements disposed at a position centered about an axis which is substantially perpendicular to said interrogating axis and passes through said sample cell.
- 11. A system according to claim 7 wherein said intensity differential processing means includes control means for generating a plurality of said distribution-representative signals, each corresponding to a selected wavelength of said interrogating light beam.
- 12. A system according to claim 7 wherein said first and second scattering planes are orthogonal.
