Claims
- 1. A method of loading devices into a carrier tape having a plurality of serially-spaced compartments of a size to receive one of the devices, the method comprising:
positioning a first of the compartments in a placement position; depositing a device in the first compartment while the first compartment is in the placement position; a first moving step of simultaneously moving the first compartment out of the placement position at a first speed and moving a second compartment at the first speed into the vicinity of, but not at, the placement position; and a second moving step of moving the second compartment into the placement position at a second speed that is slower than the first speed.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the carrier tape includes at least one flange alongside the compartments for substantially the entire length of the tape, and wherein the first and second moving steps include engaging the flange with a roller and rotating the roller to move the tape.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the tape includes sprocket holes, and wherein the first moving step includes advancing the tape a distance corresponding to less than a predetermined number of sprocket holes, and wherein the second moving step includes advancing the tape the remaining number of the sprocket holes to totally advance the tape the predetermined number of sprocket holes, wherein the predetermined number of sprocket holes corresponds to the distance between compartments.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the steps of
counting the passage of sprocket holes past a preselected area in the path of travel of the tape during each of the first and second moving steps; effecting the end of the first moving step when less than all of the predetermined number of sprocket holes have passed the preselected area; and effecting the end of the second moving step when all of the predetermined number of sprocket holes have passed the preselected area.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising substantially stopping movement of the tape between the first and second moving steps.
- 6. A method of loading devices into a carrier tape having a plurality of serially-spaced compartments of a size to receive one of the devices, the compartments including a first compartment immediately adjacent to a second compartment, the method comprising:
positioning the first compartment in the placement position; depositing a device in the first compartment while the first compartment is in the placement position; a first moving step of simultaneously moving the first compartment out of the placement position at a first speed and moving a second compartment at the first speed into the vicinity of, but not at, the placement position; and a second moving step of moving the second compartment into the placement position at a second speed that is slower than the first speed.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the carrier tape includes at least one flange alongside the compartments for substantially the entire length of the tape, and wherein the first and second moving steps include engaging the flange with a roller and rotating the roller to move the tape.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the tape includes sprocket holes, and wherein the first moving step includes advancing the tape a distance corresponding to less than a predetermined number of sprocket holes, and wherein the second moving step includes advancing the tape the remaining number of the sprocket holes to totally advance the tape the predetermined number of sprocket holes, wherein the predetermined number of sprocket holes corresponds to the distance between compartments.
- 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising the steps of
counting the passage of sprocket holes past a preselected area in the path of travel of the tape during each of the first and second moving steps; effecting the end of the first moving step when less than all of the predetermined number of sprocket holes have passed the preselected area; and effecting the end of the second moving step when all of the predetermined number of sprocket holes have passed the preselected area.
- 10. The method of claim 6, further comprising substantially stopping movement of the tape between the first and second moving steps.
- 11. A method of loading devices into a carrier tape having a plurality of serially-spaced compartments of a size to receive one of the devices, the compartments receiving the devices at a placement position, the method comprising the steps of
(A) moving one of the compartments at a first speed into the vicinity of, but not at, the placement position; (B) slowing the speed of movement of the compartment to a second speed; and (C) moving the compartment into the placement position at the second speed.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the carrier tape includes at least one flange alongside the compartments for substantially the entire length of the tape, and wherein steps A, B, and C include engaging the flange with a roller and rotating the roller to move the tape.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein the tape includes sprocket holes, and wherein step A includes advancing the tape a distance corresponding to less than a predetermined number of sprocket holes, and wherein step C includes advancing the tape the remaining number of the predetermined number of sprocket holes, wherein the predetermined number of sprocket holes correspond to the distance between compartments.
- 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the steps of
counting the passage of sprocket holes past a preselected area in the path of travel of the tape during each of steps A, B, and C; effecting the end of step A when less than all of the predetermined number of sprocket holes have passed the preselected area; and effecting the end of step C when all of the predetermined number of sprocket holes have passed the preselected area.
- 15. The method of claim 11, wherein step B includes substantially stopping movement of the tape and then moving the tape at the second speed.
