Description
CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This U.S. Non-Provisional Patent Application claims the benefit of Indian Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 202321080585 titled “A Printed Circuit Board” filed Nov. 28, 2023, the entire disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference.

FIELD

The present invention relates to the field of printed circuit boards.

BACKGROUND

A printed circuit board is an important component when it comes to electronic devices. The printed circuit board, commonly known as PCB, consists of at least one pair of daughter circuit boards, SMD components and other components, all mounted on a top surface and bottom surface of the PCB of the PCB.

Over the time, a need for reduction in size of the PCB has been identified so that space on the PCB is effectively achieved and cost and time of manufacturing is conversely reduced. However, reduction in size adversely affects the power density of the PCB. Further, arranging all the components of the PCB thereon, with an aim to reduce the size of the PCB, decreases its reliability during EMC/EMI testing.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Embodiments, of the present disclosure, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

Embodiments are provided so as to thoroughly and fully convey the scope of the present disclosure to the person skilled in the art. Numerous details are set forth, relating to specific components, and methods, to provide a complete understanding of embodiments of the present disclosure. It will be apparent to the person skilled in the art that the details provided in the embodiments should not be construed to limit the scope of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, well-known processes, well-known apparatus structures, and well-known techniques are not described in detail.

The terminology used, in the present disclosure, is only for the purpose of explaining a particular embodiment and such terminology shall not be considered to limit the scope of the present disclosure. As used in the present disclosure, the forms “a”, “an” and “the” may be intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly suggests otherwise. The terms “comprises”, “comprising”, “including”, “includes” and “having” are open-ended transitional phrases and therefore specify the presence of stated features, elements, modules, units and/or components, but do not forbid the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components, and/or groups thereof.

A conventional printed circuit board (100′) is illustrated in FIG. 1, having a daughter circuit board (115′) mounted on a top surface (108′) and bottom surface (105′) of the conventional printed circuit board (100′).

A printed circuit board will now be described in detail with reference to FIG. 2 through FIG. 5. The printed circuit board (herein referred to as ‘the main PCB (100)’) includes a bottom surface (105), a top surface (108), and side edges (110) defined between the bottom surface (105) and the top surface (108), as shown in FIG. 2.

In some embodiments, the main PCB (100) includes daughter circuit board components (115) configured to be mounted on a first side edge (110A) of the side edges (110).

In some embodiments, the main PCB (100) further includes a plurality of surface mount device (SMD) components configured to be mounted on a side edge (110A) of the main PCB (100). In some embodiments, the SMD components (120) are mounted on the main PCB (100) by grooving or plating the main PCB (100). In some embodiments, the mounting of the SMD components (120) on the main PCB (100) is facilitated by gold plating or tin plating.

FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B illustrates mounting of electromechanical components on the side edge (110) of the main PCB (100). For example, the springs (125) of the SMD components (120) are mounted on the side edge (110) as power contacts. Due to the flexibility of the springs (125), the tolerances between the two contacting surfaces are taken care of. In a similar way, other electromechanical components (as shown in FIG. 5) are mounted on the side edge (110) of the main PCB (100) to ensure mechanical strength, flexibility, suspension, power connections and other advantages.

In some embodiments, the daughter circuit board is eliminated since the daughter circuit board components (115) can now be mounted on the side edges (110), while other SMD components (120) can be mounted on the first side edge (110A) of the main PCB (100), thereby freeing up area on the main PCB (100) to facilitate mounting of other components of the main PCB (100) in the available area. This is particularly advantageous for facilitating reduction in the surface area of the main PCB (100), because the other components can be fitted on the available free space on the top surface (108) of the main PCB (100).

Thus, not only can the size of the PCB (100) be reduced, but also the time and cost required for manufacturing and assembling the main PCB (100) can be saved. Further, since the daughter circuit board components (115) are now fitted on the side edge (110A), the reliability of the PCB (100) increases during electromagnetic interference (EMI)/electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. Additionally, the daughter circuit board components (115) can be eliminated if desired, thereby eliminating the cost of the daughter circuit board.

In some embodiments, a conventional PCB (100′) has a surface area of 3960 square mm of which 211 square mm surface area was utilized for mounting components thereon. The PCB (100′) includes a pair of daughter circuit boards (115′) that consumed around 363 square mm of area of the top surface (108′) of the PCB (100′).

The position of the daughter board components (115) was changed to a side edge (110) of the PCB (100), thereby utilizing 543 square mm area of the side edge. This contributed in saving around 14% of the PCB area. Further, SMD components (120) such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, light emitting diodes (LEDs), integrated circuits (ICs) of width less than 1.56 mm can be fitted on a PCB (100) of standard thickness of 1.56 mm.

In some embodiments, the systems and methods described herein may be configured to provide a printed circuit board having relatively reduced surface area without compromising on the efficiency thereof, and that is cost-effective and reduces manufacturing and assembly time and/or resources.
