Claims
- 1. An apparatus for generating an animated motion picture on an electronic display screen, comprising:
- (a) a storage member comprising a magnetic disk and having a plurality of defined storage locations, each of said storage locations being identifiable by a respective location code;
- (b) a storage system structured to receive and store in said storage member a plurality of discrete image signals corresponding to a plurality of still images, each of said still images defining part of a specific animation sequence, by: (1) determining selected of said storage locations of said storage member at which to store selected of said discrete image signals; (2) identifying the location codes corresponding to the selected storage locations; (3) assigning said identified location codes to the corresponding discrete image signals selected for storage at said selected locations; (4) assigning at least one cross-reference code relating to a specific animation to the corresponding selected discrete image signals; (5) controlling the storage at said selected locations of said corresponding discrete image signals; and (6) controlling the storage of said cross-reference code in said storage member;
- (c) a reproduction system structured to use said assigned location codes to select and reproduce from said storage member a plurality of said stored discrete image signals corresponding to a specific animation sequence and to generate discrete display signals corresponding to said selected discrete image signals; and
- (d) a display system coupled to the reproduction system and including a storage device structured to store one of said discrete display signals corresponding to said selected discrete image signal, a video display screen, and a recording device coupled to sequentially replace in the storage device a series of said discrete display signals to produce said specific animated motion picture on said display screen.
- 2. The apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said reproduction system includes a code reader that employs said cross-reference code to reproduce stored discrete image signals that relate to a specific animation.
- 3. The apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said display system includes a reading device that reproduces a discrete image signal from said storage device of said display system and applies said reproduced signal to maintain on said video display screen the corresponding still image.
- 4. The apparatus in accordance with claim 3 further comprising an editing system that can create a new image signal corresponding to a new still image, and wherein said editing system includes an interface to said storage system and a signaling device that instructs said storage system to employ said location codes to store said new image signal in said storage member.
- 5. The apparatus in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a still-image scanner coupled to said storage system that generates corresponding electronic image signals.
- 6. The apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said storage member includes areas used for storing said location codes.
- 7. The apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said storage member includes areas used for storing said cross-reference codes.
- 8. The apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said storage system includes an analog recording transducer.
- 9. A method for generating an animated motion picture on an electronic display screen, comprising:
- (a) storing image signals at a plurality of defined storage locations of a storage member comprising a magnetic disk,
- (b) identifying each of said storage locations with a respective location code;
- (c) receiving from a video source a plurality of discrete image signals corresponding to a plurality of still images, each of said still images defining a frame of a specific animation sequence;
- (d) controlling the storage of said discrete image signals in said storage member by: (1) determining selected locations of said storage member at which to store selected of said discrete image signals; (2) identifying the location codes corresponding to the selected storage locations; (3) assigning said identified location codes to the corresponding discrete image signals selected for storage at said selected locations; and (4) controlling the storage at said selected locations of said corresponding discrete image signals;
- (e) assigning a cross-reference code to each of the discrete image signals stored in said storage member that relate to a specific animated motion picture sequence;
- (f) using said assigned location codes to select and reproduce from said storage member a first of said stored discrete image signals and using said cross-reference code to identify the first signal as corresponding to a specific animation sequence;
- (g) generating a discrete display signal corresponding to said selectively reproduced discrete image signal identified by said cross-reference code;
- (h) receiving and storing said discrete display signal in a storage device;
- (i) reproducing said display signal from the storage device and applying said signal to a display screen to display a still image defined by said display signal; and
- (j) repeating (f) through (i) with respect to a second and subsequent numbers of said stored discrete image signals to sequentially display a series of said still images to create said specific animated motion picture.
- 10. The method in accordance with claim 9 further comprising employing said cross-reference code to generate a discrete display signal only from those discrete image signals stored in said storage member that relate to a specific animated sequence.
- 11. The method in accordance with claim 9 further comprising maintaining on said display screen a still image corresponding to a selectively reproduced discrete image signal.
- 12. The method in accordance with claim 11 further comprising replacing said selectively reproduced discrete image signal with a new image signal corresponding to a new still image, and thereafter employing said location codes corresponding to said reproduced image signal to store said new image signal in said storage member at the corresponding location.
- 13. The method in accordance with claim 9 further comprising scanning a still image and generating a corresponding electronic image signal.
- 14. The method in accordance with claim 9 further comprising storing said location codes at a select area of said storage member.
- 15. The method in accordance with claim 9 further comprising storing said cross-reference codes at a select area of said storage member.
- 16. A method for generating and displaying animation comprising:
- (a) generating a plurality of electronic image signals, each signal corresponding to a still image representing a frame of an animated display;
- (b) storing each of the image signals at an accessible storage location of a storage member comprising a magnetic disk, which storage location is identified by a first code;
- (c) storing, at storage locations of the storage member that are predetermined relative to each other, the first code and a second code identifying the selected signals as part of a single animated display;
- (d) at a later time, reproducing the codes associated with an image signal and, if the second code corresponds to an animated display that is desired to be displayed, using the first code to reproduce the associated image signal from its storage location and generating therefrom a video display signal suitable for controlling an electronic display device;
- (e) applying the generated video display signal to the display device to display on a screen of the display device the still image corresponding to the reproduced image signal; and
- (f) repeating (d) through (e) a plurality of times to reproduce a plurality of image signals and to display on the screen in turn the still images corresponding to the selected animated display.
- 17. The method in accordance with claim 16 wherein part (f) comprises reproducing a plurality of image signals located at non-contiguous storage locations.
- 18. The method in accordance with claim 16 wherein part (f) comprises reproducing a plurality of image signals located at contiguous storage locations.
- 19. The method in accordance with claim 16 further comprising storing, for each image signal, the first code associated with the signal, at a predetermined location relative to the storage location of the image signal.
- 20. The method in accordance with claim 16 further comprising replacing a reproduced image signal with another signal corresponding to a new still image.
- 21. The method in accordance with claim 20 further comprising employing the first code associated with the reproduced signal to store the new signal.
- 22. The method in accordance with claim 21 wherein employing the first code associated with the reproduced signal to store the new signal comprises storing the new signal at the storage location from which the old signal was reproduced.
- 23. The method in accordance with claim 20 further comprising displaying the new still image.
- 24. The method in accordance with claim 16 wherein applying the generated video display signal to the display device includes storing the signal in a video storage device and applying the stored signal repeatedly to the display device to maintain the still image on the screen.
- 25. The method in accordance with claim 16 wherein part (b) comprises analog recording.
- 26. The method in accordance with claim 16 wherein part (b) comprises storing the image signals in an erasable storage member.
- 27. An apparatus for generating an animated motion picture on an electronic display screen, comprising:
- (a) a storage member comprising a magnetic disk having a plurality of defined storage locations, each of said storage locations being identifiable by a respective location code and storing, at selected storage locations, a plurality of discrete image signals corresponding to a plurality of still images, each of said still images defining part of a specific animation sequence identifiable by a common reference code;
- (b) an electronic reproduction system having a read transducer positionable to reproduce from said storage member a selected plurality of said stored discrete image signals and a control system structured to use said location codes to cause the read transducer to reproduce those discrete image signals identified by said reference code as corresponding to the specific animation sequence; and
- (c) a display system coupled to the reproduction system including: (1) a video display screen requiring repeated application of image signals to maintain a still image on said screen, (2) a storage device, (3) a write transducer that repeatedly applies an image signal stored in said storage device to said display screen, and (4) a recorder that replaces an image signal stored in said storage device with another image signal received from the reproduction system defining the next still image in the sequence of images defining said specific animated motion picture.
- 28. The apparatus in accordance with claim 27 wherein the storage member also holds said location codes.
- 29. The apparatus in accordance with claim 27 wherein the storage member also holds said cross-reference codes.
- 30. The apparatus in accordance with claim 27 wherein the control system is structured to use both the reference codes and the location codes to control the read transducer.
- 31. A method of creating an animated display from a storage member containing a plurality of separate image signals at addressable storage locations comprising:
- (a) reproducing an address code and a reference code associated with an image signal stored at a storage location of the storage member;
- (b) comparing the reproduced reference code with the code for a selected animated display that is desired to be displayed;
- (c) if the comparison results in a match, using the address code to electronically reproduce the associated image signal from its storage location by electro-optically transducing the recorded image signal and generating therefrom a video display signal suitable for controlling an electronic display device;
- (d) applying the generated video display signal to the display device to display on a screen of the display device the still image corresponding to the reproduced image signal; and
- (e) repeating (a) through (d) a plurality of times to reproduce a plurality of image signals and to display on the screen in turn the still images corresponding to the selected animated display.
- 32. An apparatus for generating an animated motion picture on an electronic display screen, comprising:
- (a) a storage member comprising an electro-optical recording medium and having a plurality of defined storage locations, each of said storage locations being identifiable by a respective location code;
- (b) a storage system structured to receive and store in said storage member a plurality of discrete image signals corresponding to a plurality of still images, each of said still images defining part of a specific animation sequence, by: (1) determining selected of said storage locations of said storage member at which to store selected of said discrete image signals; (2) identifying the location codes corresponding to the selected storage locations; (3) assigning said identified location codes to the corresponding discrete image signals selected for storage at said selected locations; (4) assigning at least one cross-reference code relating to a specific animation to the corresponding selected discrete image signals; (5) controlling the storage at said selected locations of said corresponding discrete image signals; and (6) controlling the storage of said cross-reference code in said storage member;
- (c) a reproduction system structured to use said assigned location codes to select and reproduce from said storage member a plurality of said stored discrete image signals corresponding to a specific animation sequence and to generate discrete display signals corresponding to said selected discrete image signals; and
- (d) a display system coupled to the reproduction system and including a storage device structured to store one of said discrete display signals corresponding to said selected discrete image signal, a video display screen, and a recording device coupled to sequentially replace in the storage device a series of said discrete display signals to produce said specific animated motion picture on said display screen.
- 33. The apparatus in accordance with claim 32 wherein said reproduction system includes a code reader that employs said cross-reference code to reproduce stored discrete image signals that relate to a specific animation.
- 34. The apparatus in accordance with claim 32 further comprising a still-image scanner coupled to said storage system that generates corresponding electronic image signals.
- 35. The apparatus in accordance with claim 32 wherein said storage system includes an analog recording transducer.
- 36. An apparatus for generating an animated motion picture on an electronic display screen, comprising:
- (a) a storage member comprising an electro-optical recording medium having a plurality of defined storage locations, each of said storage locations being identifiable by a respective location code and storing, at selected storage locations, a plurality of discrete image signals corresponding to a plurality of still images, each of said still images defining part of a specific animation sequence identifiable by a common reference code;
- (b) an electronic reproduction system having a read transducer positionable to reproduce from said storage member a selected plurality of said stored discrete image signals and a control system structured to use said location codes to cause the read transducer to reproduce those discrete image signals identified by said reference code as corresponding to the specific animation sequence; and
- (c) a display system coupled to the reproduction system including: (1) a video display screen requiring repeated application of image signals to maintain a still image on said screen, (2) a storage device, (3) a write transducer that repeatedly applies an image signal stored in said storage device to said display screen, and (4) a recorder that replaces an image signal stored in said storage device with another image signal received from the reproduction system defining the next still image in the sequence of images defining said specific animated motion picture.
- 37. The apparatus in accordance with claim 36 wherein the control system is structured to use both the reference codes and the location codes to control the read transducer.
- 38. A method of creating an animated display from a storage member containing a plurality of separate image signals at addressable storage locations comprising:
- (a) reproducing an address code and a reference code associated with an image signal stored at a storage location of the storage member;
- (b) comparing the reproduced reference code with the code for a selected animated display that is desired to be displayed;
- (c) if the comparison results in a match, using the address code to electronically reproduce the associated image signal from its storage location by magnetically transducing the recorded image signal and generating therefrom a video display signal suitable for controlling an electronic display device;
- (d) applying the generated video display signal to the display device to display on a screen of the display device the still image corresponding to the reproduced image signal; and
- (e) repeating (a) through (d) a plurality of times to reproduce a plurality of image signals and to display on the screen in turn the still images corresponding to the selected animated display.
