Claims
- 1. A processable food package comprising an extruded thermoplastic film enclosure filled with processable food having its outer surface in fluid transfer relationship with the film enclosure inner surface, said film enclosure comprising an unreacted blend of a thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of polyolefin, copolymers of olefins and a vinyl comonomer, and polyamide; and a poly(ethylene oxide) comprising between about 15 and 40 wt. % of said blend and having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 70,000 and less than 300,000, with a modifier absorbed in said blend, said modifier being transferable from said film enclosure to the food outer surface during processing thereof in said film enclosure at elevated temperature in the presence of surrounding heated water.
- 2. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said processable food is moisture-containing and its outer surface is in contiguous contact with the film enclosure inner surface.
- 3. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said processable food is meat.
- 4. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said processable food is carbohydrate.
- 5. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said processable food is poultry.
- 6. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said processable food is cheese.
- 7. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is ethylene vinyl acetate having vinyl acetate content between about 12 and about 16 wt %.
- 8. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said modifier is wood-derived liquid smoke whose color and flavor are transferable to the food outer surface during processing thereof in said food enclosure.
- 9. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said modifier is a colorant whose color is transferable to the food outer surface during processing thereof in said food enclosure.
- 10. A processable food package according to claim 1 wherein said blend is one layer of a multilayer film comprising at least three layers including a core-barrier layer, the blend layer being adhered to the inner surface of said core layer with its inside surface in direct contact with said food outer surface, and a polyolefin third layer adhered to the outside surface of said core layer.
- 11. A processable food package according to claim 10 wherein said multilayer film is irradiated at dosage of at least about 2 MR.
- 12. A method for making a modified food package comprising the steps of:
- a) providing an extruded film article having walls comprising a blend of an unreacted thermoplastic polymer and an olefinic oxide polymer comprising between about 15 and about 40 wt. % of said blend, and a modifier absorbed in said blend;
- b) filling said film article with processable food such that the food outer surface is in fluid transfer relationship with the modifier-containing film;
- c) processing the food-containing package at elevated temperature in the presence of surrounding heated water to cook said food and simultaneously transfer said modifier from said film package to the water processed food outer surface.
- 13. A method according to claim 12 wherein said processable food is moisture-containing and its outer surface is in contiguous contact with the modifier-containing film.
- 14. A method according to claim 12 wherein said olefinic oxide polymer is a homopolymer.
- 15. A method according to claim 14 wherein said olefinic oxide homopolymer is poly (ethylene oxide).
- 16. A method according to claim 15 wherein said poly (ethylene oxide) has an average molecular weight of at least about 70,000.
- 17. A method according to claim 12 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is polyolefin.
- 18. A method according to claim 17 wherein said polyolefin is ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA).
- 19. A method according to claim 18 wherein the vinyl acetate content of said EVA is between about 12 and about 16 wt %.
- 20. A method according to claim 19 wherein said polyolefin comprises a blend of a first EVA having a vinyl acetate content of less than about 24 wt % and a second EVA having a vinyl acetate content lower than said first EVA but more than about 8 wt %.
- 21. A method according to claim 17 wherein said polyolefin is a blend of ethylene vinyl acetate and polyethylene.
- 22. A method according to claim 21 wherein said polyethylene is linear low density polyethylene.
- 23. A method according to claim 21 wherein said polyethylene is very low density polyethylene.
- 24. A method according to claim 12 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is polyamide.
- 25. A method according to claim 12 wherein the extruded film is biaxially oriented.
- 26. A method according to claim 12 wherein said modifier is a colorant.
- 27. A method according to claim 12 wherein said modifier is a colorant-fragrance.
- 28. A method according to claim 27 wherein said colorant-fragrance is wood-derived liquid smoke.
- 29. A method according to claim 28 wherein smoke color and flavor are transferred to the food outer surface during said processing at high temperature.
- 30. A method according to claim 12 wherein said film package comprises a multilayer film including a core-oxygen barrier layer, the blend layer being adhered to the oxygen barrier layer on the inside surface thereof for said direct contact with the food outer surface, and another layer formed of thermoplastic material adhered to the oxygen barrier layer on the outside surface thereof, said multilayer film bag irradiated at dosage of at least about 2 MR.
- 31. A method according to claim 30 wherein said olefinic oxide homopolymer is poly (ethylene oxide) having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 70,000, said thermplastic polymer of said blend is EVA having a vinyl acetate content of between about 12 and about 16 wt %, said oxygen barrier layer is a vinylidene chloride copolymer, said thermoplastic material of said layer is a polyolefin, said modifier is wood-derived liquid smoke, and smoke color and flavor are transferred to the food outer surface during said processing at high temperature.
