Claims
- 1. An at least partially clad laminate comprising:
(a) a cladding material; (b) a matrix material; and (c) at least one non-degreased fabric comprising at least one strand comprising a plurality of fibers,
wherein at least a portion of the fabric comprises a coating which is compatible with the matrix material, and wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 8 microns using a one ounce clad, measured in either the warp direction or the fill direction of the fabric.
- 2. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 6, measured in the warp direction of the fabric.
- 3. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 4, measured in the fill direction of the fabric.
- 4. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein the cladding material comprises at least one electrically conductive material selected from copper, aluminum, silver, gold, tin-lead alloy and palladium.
- 5. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 4, wherein the at least one electrically conductive material is selected from copper.
- 6. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein the clad has a thickness ranging from 10 to 100 microns.
- 7. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 6, wherein the clad has a thickness ranging from 15 to 60 microns.
- 8. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein the compatible coating comprises a plurality of particles.
- 9. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the particles are formed from materials selected from polymeric inorganic materials, non-polymeric inorganic materials, polymeric organic materials, non-polymeric organic materials, composite materials and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
- 10. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 9, wherein the polymeric inorganic materials are selected from polyphosphazenes, polysilanes, polysiloxane, polygeremanes, polymeric sulfur, polymeric selenium, silicones and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
- 11. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 9, wherein the non-polymeric inorganic materials are selected from graphite, metals, oxides, carbides, nitrides, borides, sulfides, silicates, carbonates, sulfates, hydroxides, and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
- 12. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 9, wherein the polymeric organic materials are selected from thermosetting materials, thermoplastic materials, and mixtures thereof.
- 13. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 12, wherein the polymeric organic materials are thermosetting materials selected from thermosetting polyesters, vinyl esters, epoxy materials, phenolics, aminoplasts, thermosetting polyurethanes, and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
- 14. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 12, wherein the polymeric organic materials are thermoplastic materials selected from thermoplastic polyesters, polycarbonates, polyolefins, acrylic polymers, polyamides, thermoplastic polyurethanes, vinyl polymers, and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
- 15. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 9, wherein the composite materials are selected from particles that have a hardness at their surface that is different from the hardness of the internal portions of the particle beneath its surface.
- 16. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 15, wherein the composite materials are selected from particles formed from a primary material that is coated, clad or encapsulated with at least one secondary material.
- 17. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 16, wherein the composite materials are selected from particles formed from a primary material that is coated, clad or encapsulated with a differing form of the primary material.
- 18. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the particles have a thermal conductivity of at least 1 Watt per meter K at a temperature of 300K.
- 19. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the particles have a Mohs' hardness value which does not exceed the Mohs' hardness value of any glass fiber in the at least one strand.
- 20. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the particles have an average particle size sufficient to allow strand wet out.
- 21. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the particles have an average particle size, measured according to laser scattering techniques, ranging from 0.1 to 5 microns.
- 22. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the compatible coating further comprises at least one lubricious material different from the plurality of particles.
- 23. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 8, wherein the compatible coating further comprises at least one film-forming material.
- 24. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein the compatible coating has a loss on ignition of ranging from 0.1 to 1.6, and an air permeability, measured according to ASTM D 737, of no greater than 10 standard cubic feet per minute per square foot.
- 25. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein the resin compatible coating further comprises a resin reactive diluent. selected from a lubricant comprising one or more functional groups capable of reacting with an epoxy resin system and selected from the group consisting of amine groups, alcohol groups, anhydride groups, acid groups and epoxy groups.
- 26. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1, wherein the at least one non-degreased fabric is selected from a 7628 style fabric, a 2116 style fabric, and a 1080 style fabric.
- 27. An at least partially clad laminate comprising:
(a) a cladding material; (b) a matrix material; and (c) at least one fabric comprising at least one strand comprising a plurality of fibers,
wherein the at least one fabric is selected from a 7628 style fabric, and wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 8 microns using a one ounce clad, measured in either the warp direction or the fill direction of the at least one fabric.
- 28. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 27, wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 5.75, measured in the warp direction of the at least one fabric.
- 29. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 27, wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 4.5, measured in the fill direction of the at least one fabric.
- 30. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 27, wherein the cladding material comprises at least one electrically conductive material selected from copper.
- 31. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 27, wherein the clad has a thickness ranging from 15 to 60 microns.
- 32. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 27, wherein the at least one fabric is a non-degreased fabric, and at least a portion of the fabric comprises a coating which is compatible with the matrix material in the clad laminate.
- 33. An at least partially clad laminate comprising:
(a) a cladding material; (b) a matrix material; and (c) at least one fabric comprising at least one strand comprising a plurality of fibers,
wherein the at least one fabric is a 1080 style fabric, and wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 4 using a one ounce clad, measured in either the warp direction or the fill direction of the at least one fabric.
- 34. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 33, wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 3.75, measured in the warp direction of the at least one fabric.
- 35. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 33, wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor less than 4, measured in the fill direction of the fabric.
- 36. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 33, wherein the cladding material is comprised of at least one electrically conductive material selected from copper.
- 37. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 33, wherein the clad has a thickness ranging from 15 to 60 microns.
- 38. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 33, wherein the at least one fabric is a non-degreased fabric, and at least a portion of the fabric comprises a coating which is compatible with the matrix material in the clad laminate.
- 39. An at least partially clad laminate comprising:
(a) a cladding material; (b) a matrix material; and (c) at least one fabric comprising at least one strand comprising a plurality of fibers,
wherein the at least one fabric is selected from a 7628 style fabric and a 1080 style fabric, and wherein at least a portion of the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor using a one ounce clad, measured in either the warp direction or the fill direction of the at least one fabric, that is at least 15% less when compared to a corresponding at least partially clad laminate comprising a fabric comprising a starch/oil sizing.
- 40. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 39, wherein the at least partially clad laminate has a roughness factor using a one ounce clad, measured in either the warp direction or the fill direction of the fabric, that is at least 50% less when compared to an at least partially clad laminate comprising a fabric comprising a starch/oil sizing.
- 41. An at least partially clad laminate according to claim 39, wherein the at least one fabric is a non-degreased fabric, and at least a portion of the fabric comprises a coating which is compatible with the matrix material in the at least partially clad laminate.
- 43. An electronic support comprising the at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1.
- 44. An electronic support comprising the at least partially clad laminate according to claim 27.
- 45. An electronic support comprising the at least partially clad laminate according to claim 33.
- 46. An electronic support comprising the at least partially clad laminate according to claim 39.
- 47. An electronic circuit board comprising the at least partially clad laminate according to claim 1.
