Claims
- 1. In an electronic packaging interface of the type, wherein essentially parallel critically spaced conductors on a first surface of a tape carrier that has first and second surfaces separated by the thickness of a dielectric layer, are bonded to electrical contact locations in different areas in a substrate surface that is in contact with said second surface of said tape carrier, the improvement for preventing unsupported portions of said critically spaced conductors between said carrier and said electrical contact locations, from coming closer to each other than said critical spacing on said carrier, comprising:
- each of said conductors extending cantilevered beyond a supporting edge extending from said first surface through to said second surface of said tape carrier,
- each of said conductors remaining in the plane of said first surface of said tape carrier to the vicinity of the respective electrical contact location of said electrical contact locations,
- each electrical contact location to which an adjacent conductor of said critically spaced conductors is bonded being located a different distance from said supporting edge of said tape carrier, and,
- each of said conductors having a first bend, in said vicinity of the respective electrical contact location to which it is to be bonded,
- said first bend shaping said cantilevered portion of said conductor into a direction toward said substrate,
- each of said conductors having a second bend shaping said cantilevered portion of said conductor into a direction essentially parallel to said substrate surface, the distance between said first and said second bends in said cantilevered portion of each said conductor being slightly greater than said dielectric layer thickness.
- 2. The interface of claim 1 wherein said electrical contact locations are in two rows in said substrate surface staggered so that each electrical contact location in a row is aligned with the electrical contact location separation in an adjacent row.
- 3. In an electronic packaging interface wherein spaced conductors positioned on a first surface of a tape carrier that has first and second surfaces separated by the thickness of a dielectric layer, said second surface in turn being in contact with an electrical contact containing substrate surface with the ends of said conductors being bonded to the electrical contacts in the substrate, the improvement for maintaining minimum spacing of said conductors in the distance from said tape carrier to the electrical contact location in the substrate, comprising in combination:
- each of said spaced conductors extending cantilevered beyond a supporting edge through said tape carrier from said first surface to said second surface,
- each adjacent electrical contact in said substrate surface being positioned a different distance from said supporting edge,
- each of said spaced conductors having the cantilevered end thereof extending in the plane of said first surface of said tape carrier and first bent in the direction of said substrate at the electrical contact location to which it is to be bonded, and further bent to essentially parallel to said contact location at a distance of said dielectric layer thickness from said first bending, and,
- the end of each of said conductors being bonded to an electrical contact location.
- 4. The electronic packaging interface of claim 3 wherein said tape carrier is a single dielectric lamination, said conductors are essentially parallel at said supporting edge at minimum spacing and said contact locations are in rows in said substrate surface staggered so that each contact location in a row is aligned with the separation between contact locations in an adjacent row.
- 5. A conductor carrier tape, having first and second surfaces separated by a layer of dielectric material and having on a first surface thereof a plurality of essentially parallel spaced conductors,
- the end of each of said conductors extending cantilevered beyond a supporting edge that in turn extends through said tape from said first surface to said second surface, and,
- the end of each of said conductors being shaped by a first bend toward said second surface at a different distance from said supporting edge than any adjacent conductor of said conductors and by a second bend to a direction essentially parallel to said second surface of said tape.
- 6. The interface of claim 3 wherein said distance between said first bend and said second bend is slightly more than the thickness of said tape carrier.
