Claims
- 1. A termination assembly for a differential signal, high-frequency transmission line, the transmission line having a dielectric body with a pair of conductive traces disposed on the exterior of the body, the two conductive traces being spaced apart from each a given distance along the length of said body between the two ends thereof, the termination assembly comprising:
a housing, the housing including a dielectric body portion having a cavity disposed therein sized to receive an end of said transmission line, a pair of conductive element spaced apart from each other and disposed within the cavity so as to electrically engage said transmission line conductive traces when said transmission line end is inserted into said cavity, and conductive tail portions projecting exterior of said cavity and said body portion for engagement with opposing conductive surfaces of a circuit board.
- 2. The termination assembly of claim 1, wherein said transmission line includes a cylindrical rod and said conductive traces are spaced apart from each other on the exterior of the rod and said housing includes an endcap that includes a hollow cylindrical member.
- 3. The termination assembly of claim 2, wherein said endcap includes a conical end which guides said endcap into a circuit board opening.
- 4. The termination assembly of claim 1, further including a second housing disposed proximate to said endcap and interconnected thereto, the second endcap including a cavity for receiving a second transmission line end therein
- 5. The termination assembly of claim 1, wherein said transmission line includes a plurality of pairs of conductive traces thereon, and the housing cavity includes a slot that extends lengthwise of said housing, said housing including a plurality of conductive elements disposed therein on opposite sides of said slot.
- 6. The termination assembly of claim 5, wherein each of said conductive elements includes a terminal formed from a length of wire bent upon itself to form a U-shaped terminal.
- 7. The termination assembly of claim 6, wherein said terminals include open ends that define contact portions thereof and closed ends that define tail portions thereof.
- 8. The termination assembly of claim 5, wherein each of said conductive elements includes a dual loop terminal that provides a redundant circuit path between an opposing conductive trace of said transmission line and a conductive surface of said circuit board.
- 9. The termination assembly of claim 5, further including a conductive capacitive coupling member that is disposed within said slot and which is interposed between said conductive elements, the coupling member providing a conductive surface spaced apart from said conductive elements which increases capacitive coupling between said conductive elements.
- 10. The termination assembly of claim 9, further including a terminal carrier member held within said housing, said terminal carrier member supporting both said conductive elements and said coupling member.
- 11. The termination assembly of claim 9, wherein said coupling member has an inverted U-shape with an elongated backbone portion and a plurality of legs that are spaced apart from each other by intervening spaces along the backbone portion, the legs depending downwardly from said backbone portion toward said circuit board,.
- 12. The termination assembly of claim 10, wherein said coupling member legs have a width greater than corresponding widths of said conductive elements.
- 13. The termination assembly of claim 5, wherein said conductive elements each have a tail portion that extends from said housing, the tail portions being turned inwardly toward said housing slot so that they do not project outwardly away from said housing slot past edges of connector housing.
