Claims
- 1. A transmission line for transmitting both high-frequency differential signals and power, comprising:
a dielectric body having a preselected length that extends between two opposing ends and having a preselected width, a first pair of conductive traces disposed on the exterior of the body, one of the conductive traces carrying a positive differential signal and the other of said conductive traces carrying a negative differential signal when said transmission line is energized, the first pair conductive traces being spaced apart from each a given distance along the length of said body between the two ends thereof, said first pair conductive traces being aligned with each other so as to permit capacitive coupling therebetween through said dielectric body, and a second pair of conductive traces disposed on the exterior of the body for carrying power when said transmission line is energized, the second pair of conductive traces being spaced apart from each a given distance along the length of said body between the two ends thereof, said second pair of conductive traces being aligned with each other so as to permit capacitive coupling therebetween through said dielectric body, said first and second pairs of conductive traces being spaced apart from each a sufficient distance to deter coupling between said first and second pairs of conductive traces.
- 2. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has a polygonal configuration with multiple, distinct sides and said first and second pairs of conductive traces are disposed on individual, distinct sides of said dielectric body.
- 3. The transmission line of claim 2, wherein said dielectric body has a rectangular configuration
- 4. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body includes has a plurality of land portions projecting therefrom, the raised lands being separated from each other by intervening valleys, said first and second pairs of conductive traces being supported on respective first and second pairs of raised lands.
- 5. The transmission line of claim 4, wherein said dielectric body is an extruded body.
- 6. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body is an extruded body.
- 7. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has at least first and second grooves formed on said dielectric body exterior, each of the first and second grooves including a pair of side walls spaced apart from each other by an intervening gap and said first and second conductive traces being respectively disposed on said first and second groove sidewalls.
- 8. The transmission line of claim 7, wherein said first and second grooves include base portions interconnecting said groove sidewalls together.
- 9. The transmission line of claim 7, wherein said dielectric body includes a base surface spaced apart from said first and second grooves, and said dielectric body further includes a ground plane supported on said dielectric body base surface.
- 10. The transmission line of claim 9, wherein the ground plane extends on said dielectric body base surface perpendicular to said grooves.
- 11. The transmission line of claim 7, wherein said groove sidewalls of said first and second grooves are spaced apart from each other a first spacing and said first and second grooves are spaced apart from each other a second spacing, the second spacing being greater than the first spacing.
- 12. The transmission line of claim 7, wherein said groove sidewalls of said first groove are spaced apart from each other a first spacing and said first and second grooves are spaced apart from each other a second spacing, the second spacing being greater than the first spacing.
- 13. The transmission line of claim 7, wherein said second groove is filled with a plug member formed from a dielectric material having a dielectric constant different than a dielectric constant of said dielectric body.
- 14. The transmission line of claim 13, wherein the plug member partially extends out of said groove and onto said exterior of said dielectric body.
- 15. The transmission line of claim 13, wherein said plug member dielectric constant is equal to or greater than said dielectric body dielectric constant.
- 16. The transmission line of claim 7, wherein said first pair of conductive traces are covered with an insulative coating that prevents said first pair of conductive surfaces from contacting each other.
- 17. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said first and second pairs of conductive traces are formed on said dielectric body by selectively plating portions of said dielectric body.
- 18. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said first and second pairs of conductive traces are formed on said dielectric body by vacuum deposition.
- 19. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein each of said conductive traces of said first and said second pair of conductive traces have preselected widths, the widths of said second conductive traces being greater than the widths of said first conductive traces.
- 20. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said second pair of conductive traces is spaced apart from said first pair of conductive traces by a wide isolation portion of said dielectric body, the isolation portion having a width that is greater than a spacing between said first pair of conductive traces.
- 21. A low impedance power transmission line, comprising;
an elongated thin dielectric body having a dielectric constant greater than 1.0, the dielectric body including a plurality of enlarged body portions that are interconnected widthwise by intervening web portions, the web portions defining intervening valley portions that extend lengthwise between adjacent enlarged body portions, and a plurality of conductive traces supported on said dielectric body for carrying power along the length of said transmission line, a first conductive trace being conductive trace being supported on a first side of said dielectric body and a second conductive trace being supported on a second side of said dielectric body, said first and second conductive traces being aligned together.
- 22. The power transmission line of claim 21, wherein each of said first and second conductive traces extends across at least two adjacent lands and one intervening valley of said dielectric body.
