Claims
- 1. A transmission line for transmitting differential signals at high-frequencies, comprising:
a dielectric body having a preselected length that extends between two opposing ends and having a preselected width, a pair of conductive traces disposed on the exterior of the body, one of the conductive traces carrying a positive differential signal and the other of said conductive traces carrying a negative differential signal when said transmission line is energized, the two conductive traces being spaced apart from each a given distance along the length of said body between the two ends thereof, said conductive traces being aligned with each other so as to permit capacitive coupling therebetween through said dielectric body.
- 2. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body includes a cylindrical rod and said conductive traces are spaced apart from each other on the exterior of the rod.
- 3. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body includes an optical fiber embedded therein in a manner so that the optical fiber is surrounded by said dielectric body.
- 4. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has a square configuration with four distinct sides and said conductive traces are disposed on two sides of said square.
- 5. The transmission line of claim 4, further a second pair of conductive traces disposed on the exterior of said dielectric body, thereby defining at least four distinct conductive traces on said dielectric body, each of said conductive traces being disposed on a single side of said body.
- 6. The transmission line of claim 5, wherein the two conductive traces of the second pair of conductive traces respectively carry negative and positive differential signals when energized, said two pairs of conductive traces being disposed on said dielectric body in a pattern such that, in each pair, a conductive trace that carries negative differential signals opposes a conductive trace that carries positive differential signals
- 7. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said body has a rectangular configuration with four distinct sides and said conductive traces are disposed on two sides of the body.
- 8. The transmission line of claim 7, further including four conductive traces disposed on said body, one conductive trace being disposed on a single side thereof.
- 9. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has a convex configuration with at least four distinct sides, two of which are curved outwardly to define the convex configuration, and said two conductive traces are respectively disposed on said curved surfaces.
- 10. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has a concave configuration with at least four distinct sides, two of which are curved inwardly to define the concave configuration, and said two conductive traces are disposed on said curved surfaces.
- 11. The transmission line of claim 10, wherein all four of the sides of said dielectric body have inwardly curved portions defined therein, and said dielectric body includes four distinct conductive surfaces, each conductive surface being respectively disposed on a single side of said dielectric body.
- 12. The transmission line of claim 11, wherein each of said conductive traces is disposed on said inwardly curved portions of each of said distinct sides.
- 13. The transmission line of claim 12, wherein each of said inwardly curved portions has a given width and each of said conductive traces has a width less than the width of said inwardly curved portion supporting it.
- 14. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has a plurality of raised lands defined thereon on a first side thereof, the raised lands being separated from each other by intervening valleys, said conductive traces being supported on said raised lands.
- 15. The transmission line of claim 14, wherein said dielectric body is an extruded body.
- 16. The transmission line of claim 14, wherein said dielectric body includes a second side opposite said first side, said dielectric body also including a plurality of raised lands on said second side, the raised lands on each of said first and second sides being aligned with each other, said transmission line further including a second pair of conductive traces disposed on said second side raised lands.
- 17. The transmission line of claim 2, wherein said conductive traces have equal widths and they extend along said rod exterior along two distinct arc lengths.
- 18. The transmission line of claim 2, wherein said rod has a given circumference and each of said conductive traces has a width that extends on the rod exterior for an arc length, the arc lengths of said conductive traces being less than arc lengths of intervening dielectric body portions.
- 19. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has at least one bend formed therein and said conductive traces are spaced apart from each other through said bend.
- 20. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein further including a center conductor axially extending through said dielectric body in said length thereof, said dielectric body surrounding said center conductor and insulating it from contact with said conductive surfaces.
- 21. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said dielectric body has at least one groove formed therein, the groove including a pair of side walls spaced apart from each other by an intervening gap and said conductive traces are disposed on the groove sidewalls.
- 22. The transmission line of claim 21, wherein the groove includes a base portion interconnecting said groove sidewalls together.
- 23. The transmission line of claim 21, further including an additional groove also having a pair of sidewalls separated by an intervening gap, the additional groove sidewalls supporting an additional pair of conductive traces thereon.
- 24. The transmission line of claim 23, further including a ground plane supported on said dielectric body exterior, the ground plane being spaced apart from said conductive traces by an intervening portion of said dielectric body.
- 25. The transmission line of claim 24, wherein the ground plane extends on said dielectric body in a direction that is perpendicular to said grooves.
- 26. The transmission line of claim 23, wherein said groove sidewalls are spaced apart from each other, a first spacing and said grooves are spaced apart from each other a second spacing, the second spacing being greater than the first spacing.
- 27. The transmission line of claim 14, further including a pair of surface mount members, a single one of the surface mounting members extending out from said conductive surfaces supported on said raised lands.
- 28. The transmission line of claim 14, further including an exterior casing that encloses a portion of said dielectric body, the exterior casing insulating portions of said conductive traces from shorting contact.
- 29. The transmission line of claim 21, wherein said groove is filled with a second dielectric material.
- 30. The transmission line of claim 29, wherein the second dielectric material extends out of said groove and onto said exterior of said dielectric body.
- 31. The transmission line of claim 29, wherein said dielectric body and said second dielectric material have different dielectric constants.
- 32. The transmission line of claim 14, wherein a portion of said dielectric body exterior and said conductive traces are covered with an insulative coating that prevents said conductive surfaces from contacting each other.
- 33. The transmission line of claim 21, wherein said conductive traces are protected by an insulative coating that prevents said conductive surfaces from making electrical contact with each other.
- 34. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said conductive traces are formed on said dielectric body by selectively plating portions of said dielectric body.
- 35. The transmission line of claim 1, wherein said conductive traces are formed on said dielectric body by vacuum deposition.
- 36. A transmission line for transmitting electrical differential signals at frequencies exceeding 1 GHz comprising:
an elongated, narrow body formed from a dielectric material having a dielectric constant greater than 1.0, the dielectric body having a perimeter that defines an exterior of said dielectric body, the dielectric material being solid to define a definite cross-section of said dielectric body; and a pair of conductive traces disposed on the exterior of said dielectric body, the two conductive traces extending lengthwise along said dielectric body and spaced apart from each other on said dielectric body exterior to define two circuit paths, said dielectric body extending between said conductive traces, said pair of conductive traces respectively carrying positive and negative differential signals so as to define a signal transmission line along said dielectric body, said dielectric body being narrow so as to permit coupling to occur between said conductive traces through said dielectric body when said transmission line is energized.
- 37. The transmission line of claim 36, wherein said dielectric material is a plastic and said conductive traces are plated on the dielectric material.
- 38. The transmission line of claim 36, wherein said conductive traces are formed on said dielectric body by vacuum deposition.
- 39. The transmission line of claim 35, wherein said dielectric body is a cylindrical rod.
- 40. The transmission line of claim 39, wherein said conductive traces are each formed on said cylindrical rod for a preselected arc length.
- 41. The transmission line of claim 40, wherein one conductive trace has an arc length that is greater than an arc length of said other conductive trace.
- 42. The transmission line of claim 36, wherein said dielectric body has a polygonal cross section of a plurality of distinct sides and each conductive trace is disposed on a distinct side.
- 43. The transmission line of claim 42, wherein said dielectric body has four sides and said conductive traces are disposed on two opposing sides thereof.
- 44. The transmission line of claim 43, further including a second pair of conductive traces disposed on two other sides of said dielectric body.
- 45. The transmission line of claim 42, wherein at least two of said distinct sides are convex and said conductive traces are disposed on the convex sides of said dielectric body.
- 46. The transmission line of claim 42, wherein at least two sides of said distinct sides are concave and said conductive traces are disposed on the concave sides of said dielectric body.
- 47. The transmission line of claim 36, wherein said dielectric body includes a plurality of support portions interconnected by web portions, the support portions being larger than the web portions and said conductive traces being disposed on said support portions of said dielectric body.
- 48. The transmission line of claim 47, wherein said conductive traces are supported on opposite sides of one of said support portions such that said support portion supports a single signal transmission channel.
- 49. The transmission line of claim 36, wherein said dielectric body is extended and includes a plurality of support portions interconnected by intervening web portions, the support portions being thicker than the web portions and rising above said web portions, each of said support portions supporting a pair of conductive traces thereon on opposite sides of said web portions so that each support portion supports a signal transmission line thereon.
- 50. A multiple channel, differential signal transmission line, comprising;
an elongated thin dielectric body having a dielectric constant greater than 1.0, the dielectric body including a plurality of spaced-apart slots extending lengthwise through said dielectric body, each of said slots being defined by a pair of sidewalls that are interconnected by a floor; and a plurality of conductive traces supported on said groove sidewalls, one conductive trace on one sidewall of a groove carrying negative differential signals and the other conductive trace on the other sidewall of the groove carrying positive differential signals when said transmission line is energized whereby individual signal transmission channels are disposed in individual grooves.
- 51. The transmission line of claim 50, wherein said dielectric body has a plurality of distinct sides and said groovers are disposed in a first side thereof.
- 52. The transmission line of claim 51, wherein said dielectric body includes a second side opposite to and spaced apart from the first side.
- 53. The transmission line of claim 52, further including a conductive ground plane disposed on the second side and spaced apart from said grooves.
- 54. The transmission line of claim 53, wherein said grooves and conductive surfaces supported therein extend perpendicular to said ground plane.
- 55. The transmission line of claim 50, further including a plug disposed in said groove, the plug being formed from a dielectric material.
- 56. The transmission line of claim 55, wherein said dielectric body has a dielectric constant that is different than a dielectric constant of said plug.
- 57. The transmission line of claim 50, further including a conformed coating applied to at least said conductive traces which prevents said conductive traces from electrically contacting each other.
