Claims
- 1. A photohardenable composition comprising a free radical addition polymerizable or crosslinkable compound, and a cationic dye-borate anion complex, said complex being capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said compound, said cationic dye being a cyanine, a carbocyanine, a dicarbocyanine, or a tricarbocyanine dye.
- 2. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said dye is ##STR15##
- 3. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said dye is ##STR16##
- 4. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said dye is ##STR17##
- 5. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said dye is ##STR18##
- 6. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said dye is ##STR19## where R' represents an n-butyl group and Ar represents a phenyl group, or R' represents an n-hexyl group and Ar represents a phenyl group, or R' represents an n-butyl group and Ar represents an anisyl group.
- 7. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said dye is ##STR20## wherein Ar represents a phenyl group and R and R' are defined as below.

- 12. The photohardenable composition of claim 1 wherein said borate anion is a triaryl-monoalkyl borate.
- 13. A photohardenable composition comprising a free radical addition polymerizable or crosslinkable compound and a cationic dye-borate anion complex, said complex being capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said compound; said borate anion being a triaryl-monoalkyl borate.
- 14. The photohardenable composition of claim 12 wherein said borate anion complex is a triphenylborate anion complex.
- 15. The photohardenable composition of claim 13 wherein said monoalkyl group is selected from the group consisting of n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl groups.
- 16. The photohardenable composition of claim 12 wherein said monoalkyl group is an alicyclic group selected from the group consisting of cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl.
- 17. A photosensitive material comprising a support having a layer of a photohardenable composition on the surface thereof, said composition comprising a free radical addition polymerizable or crosslinkable compound and a cationic dye-borate anion complex, said complex being capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking of said compound, and said cationic dye being a cyanine, a carbocyanine, a dicarbocyanine, or a tricarbocyanine dye.
- 18. The photosensitive material of claim 17 wherein said dye is ##STR25##
- 19. The photosensitive material of claim 17 wherein said dye is ##STR26##
- 20. The photosensitive material of claim 17 wherein said dye is ##STR27##
- 21. The photosensitive material of claim 17 wherein said dye is ##STR28##
- 22. The photosensitive material of claim 17 wherein said dye is ##STR29## where R' represents an n-butyl group and AR represents a phenyl group, or R' represents an n-hexyl group and AR represents a phenyl group, or R' represents an n-butyl group and AR represents an anisyl group.
- 23. The photosensitive material of claim 17 wherein said dye is ##STR30## wherein AR represents a phenyl group and R and R' are defined as below.

A photosensitive material comprising a support having a layer of photosensitive material on the surface thereof, said composition comprising a free radical addition polymerizable or crosslinkable compound and a cationic dye-borate anion complex, said complex being capable of absorbing actinic radiation and producing free radicals which initiate free radical polymerization or crosslinking or said compound, said borate anion complex being a triarylmonoalkyl borate.
- 28. The photosensitive material of claim 27 wherein said borate anion complex is a triphenyl borate anion complex.
- 29. The photosensitive material of claim 28 wherein said monoalkyl group is selected from the group consisting of n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl groups.
- 30. The photosensitive material of claim 28 wherein said monoalkyl group is an alicyclic group selected from the group consisting of cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl.
- 31. The photosensitive material of claim 27 wherein said photohardenable composition is microencapsulated.
- 32. The composition of claim 1 wherein said carbocyanine dye is a dye of the formula (II): ##STR34## Where n is 0, 1, 2, or 3, y is selected from the group consisting of --CH.dbd.CH-- >NCH.sub.3, >C(CH.sub.3).sub.2, --O--, --S--, or Se; and R is an alkyl group having at least 4 carbon atoms.
- 33. The photosensitive material of claim 32 wherein said alkyl group contains 4 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 34. The composition of claim 33 wherein n is 1 or 2; y is >C(CH.sub.3).sub.2, O, or S; and R is a straight chain alkyl group containing 4 to 7 atoms.
- 35. The photosensitive material of claim 17 ##STR35## n is 0, 1, 2, or 3; y is selected from the group consisting of CH.dbd.CH
- >NCH.sub.3, >C(CH.sub.3).sub.2, --O--, --S--, or Se; and R is an alkyl group having at least 4 carbon atoms.
- 36. The photosensitive material of claim 35 wherein said alkyl group contains 4 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 37. The photosensitive material of claim 36 wherein n is 1 or 2; y is >C(CH.sub.3).sub.2, O, or S; and R is a straight chain alkyl group contains 4 to 7 atoms.
